@mw-in-darwin.  From MFC we site:

“Boro will face Southampton in the Sky Bet Championship play-off semi-finals.

Kim Hellberg's side earned a fifth-place finish following a 2-2 draw with Wrexham on the final day.

Boro will host the Saints in a 12.30pm kick-off on Saturday 9 May, then travel to St Mary's in an 8pm kick-off on Tuesday 12 May.

The other play-off semi-final will see Millwall face Hull City.

Ticket information will be confirmed shortly.” 😎

My brother and I went to the game today. We couldn’t get tickets via Boro, as we didn’t have enough priority points, but he has connections with the refereeing world as he’s the secretary of the Stockport Referees Association, and one of the refereeing team, who didn’t need the tickets for his family, let us have them. No colours to be worn, and no cheering, as we were in the home stand!

We enjoyed the game, which was a blood and thunder affair. Wrexham, roared on tremendously by their very noisy and passionate crowd, put us under a lot of pressure, which we did well to withstand. We definitely weren’t anywhere near our best in the first half, despite scoring twice. The two goals we conceded were both as a result of sloppy errors by our defence.

We were much better second half, but still not very effective overall. McGree made a difference. Conway had a very good game. It was a huge surprise to see Sène given a cameo - had you seen him ‘training’ before the game you would never have done so: in contrast to everyone else, he made virtually no effort. I’m not surprised KH has not seen fit to start him if that’s how little he tries usually!

Overall, we were probably good value for a point. Not winning was disappointing, especially as we have to play Southampton in the playoffs.

@clive-hurren I could not believe my eyes when Sene was brought on, especially when Silvera was also sat on the bench and does try his hardest and IMO offers more.

Surprisingly, we have the joint second best defensive goals conceeded, but it is the goals for that have let us down. However over the last number of games the defence has been nervous at times and unfortunatley has next to no back up at the FB positions. As much as Morris has been generally excellant, again today he gave away the ball too many time infront of the D.

I think Southhampton will be able to score more goals than we will be able to. Both defences can be porous, but they have the better attacking players, certainly on the bench.

@mw-in-darwin - it will all depend on how many priority points you have acquired as to when you can purchase the tickets.

I can get mine at 9am on Tuesday although will be setting up for the first exam of the GCSE season then so will have to hope that my colleagues don’t mind me being other wise engaged for a while……….just have to hope that i have the A team with me who know what they are doing!

And what does Hanson have to do to get a game? He’s much better than Sène, in my view.

So it’s Southampton in the playoffs. They will be clear favourites as they are on a tremendous run of results plus it’s generally accepted that playing at home in the second leg is an advantage.

My wish is that somehow Boro sneak a lead to take to Southampton. Unfortunately I don’t think Boro can stop them from scoring and so it might have to be a 2-1 lead.

Whatever happens and I’m not optimistic, the overall view has got to be that Boro have had a good season. I dare say we would all have taken a top 6 finish at the start of the season. We could have finished second but didn’t. The league table after 46 games doesn’t lie.

So, it’s onwards and upwards!!

@philip-of-huddersfield

Yes, I think that if a playoff place had been offered at the start of the season most of us would have grabbed the offer with both hands.  Still, the playoffs are the consolation prize when we were in such a great position before the seven game winless run the major cause of which in my view was the loss of HH.  If he had been playing there is a very good chance he would have scored a goal and most likely made one or two for others and two wins during that poor run would have seen us finish the season on 86 points and we would now be heading for the EPL.

Alas it was not to be but we should enter the playoffs with confidence and as Werder said earlier we have a very good away record this season.  So I reckon we might benefit from playing at Southampton in the second leg because if we can keep a clean sheet in the first leg or perhaps win it then Southampton will have to attack us and we have been at our best in that scenario.  We are very good on the counter and that should hold us in good stead.  So bring it on!

@boroexile.  I agree that the loss of HH and the winless run did not help our cause, I don’t think you can point to that as the sole reason for not taking a top two slot; I believe that the main factors are that we are inconsistent and fail to execute in the final third, added to which we are adept at shooting ourselves in the foot with defensive errors.

As well as the reasons you mention you can also think back to a loss at Portsmouth and what I call the BBC debacle, Blackburn, Bristol City and Coventry where from a possible 18 points we only managed 3 points; promotion was lost over the season rather than that recent run of games.

Overall, we have just fallen short and the table doesn’t lie, unfortunately. 😎

@k-p-in-spain          promotion was lost over the season rather than that recent run of games.

I think your post KP was a fair assessment of our failure to win promotion, especially when we had numerous opportunities to build a points buffer when other teams around us were dropping them. Ipswich a prime example.

It is also disappointing, as I believe this season was probably the best opportunity for promotion, since being relagated. Sky TV showed a table of the teams that occupied the top twp positions over the whole season up to yesterdays matches. I forget the exact numbers but Coventry and Middlesbrough were in the two hundreds (250 ish I think) the next was Ipswich with 45.

And, the other main reason was the failure of the Recruitement Team to find a number of reasonable quality bench/back up players over the last four windows, to increase the depth of the squad to cope with the constant grind that is the Championship.

When Hellberg, for what ever reason, only known to him, brought on Sene, well that told the sad story.

It doesn’t sound like KH’s style, but maybe he was actually telling the recruitment team a story by bringing him on. When I first saw him in the team earlier in the season, I thought I spotted a player in there, maybe to give us a different type of option, but like you, I remain thoroughly unconvinced by what he offers us now.

Despite all the pessimism today, I would rather play Southampton over two legs than meet them at Wembley. Yes, it would have been better to play the home leg last (especially for me) but it is what it is.

I agree. I rather see them now than at Wembley, of which they have very recent experience.

And if there were a team to beat them, it would be Boro. According to the table - which does not lie according as said by Phillip - we are as good as them. It will be the team that is better on the day.

Up the Boro!

i agree Exmil.Southampton will certainly be wary of having to play us at home in the second leg. If we do make it to Wembley, its wide pitch will favour us against a low block.

Hang on. I was just going to press go on this post when I thought I would be a little smart and lookup just how wide it is in comparison to what we have had to play on all season. Do you know what? Wembley's pitch width is actually a standard 68m, the same as (or less than) 13 Championship pitches this season, including our own.
