Off topic, but am I the only one who’s noticed a dearth of St George’s flags on cars and houses during the current Euro 24 tournament? Maybe it’s because of England’s performances so far (although I haven’t written off the chance of us reaching the Final) or perhaps it’s been overshadowed by tomorrow’s big competition - come on, you Reds… 😉

I wish I’d got my MP to place a bet for me on England getting the Final.

A recent interview with Riley McGree in here: https://www.mfc.co.uk/news/2024/july/11/riley-mcgree-discusses-the-preparations-for-the-new-season/

Nothing new, but he sounds happy as in his previous interview in Australia. I hope a new, longer contract will be coming soon.

Up the Boro!

Anyway it's all positive and so is the Boro news on recruitment, we may not agree with some of the planning but at least there is a plan.

John

Couldn't agree more. MFC feels like a club that knows what it is trying to do and that is a real change.

Glad to hear your good news.

Just watched a replay of 1966 England v Germany. I really enjoyed it. A very  open game with both teams ‘ going for it’.

When a player got the ball the initial reaction was to play it forward, first time passing, skilful players, when a minor foul was committed players briefly shook hands, no arguing with the referee, commentators just commentated on the game without the hysterics we now have, etc

No time wasting, no diving , no staying down when not injured, no backyards and sideway passing of the ball.

An excellent watch.

Hope tomorrows game is as exciting and enjoyable whether England win or lose.

👍😂

@exmil

it’s good to see what reads to be a lot of good quality young players coming in. It suggests that the club is really committed to the long term on the women’s side of the game. The area has always produced top class players and this can be another way for the club to link with the broader local public.

What odds on Beth Mead coming back to her home club in a few years time to finish her career with Boro in the WSL. 🙂

Yeah, it was nice to see an unseeded pair to win at Wimbledon. They started to play together only in April but have won a few toirnaments already before Wimbledon. It went to three tie-breaks before the winner was there and took 2 h 45 min to the finish. Nice for the pair, though.

Boro lost 2-0 in Portugal in the closed-doors practice match. But at least most players played 45 min - including Hackney, Coburn and McGree.

We are still missing Forss, Smith and Leninhan who are not quite match fit yet. Here are some photos of the match: https://www.mfc.co.uk/news/2024/july/13/boro-in-portugal--vitoria-s-c-/

I really fancy Gareth and the lads to beat the odds tonight and win the Euros.

Spain have been the outstanding team of the competition, but in the semis, after an outstanding first half they stopped playing and France should really have taken the game into extra time.

A repeat of that Spanish performance and I can see us doing what we have become rather good at, which is coming from behind, and winning the game.

So I'll go for England 2 Spain 1, and "Arise Sir Gareth".

And if we get hammered, at least I tried

I’m hoping to find a bar to watch the game when we arrive at our campsite late this afternoon - as you may have already guessed Mrs Werder was in charge of booking the date of this year’s holiday as leaving on Euro 2024 final day wasn’t on her checklist 🤔

At least I’ve avoided sitting quietly in the corner for an England v Germany final where I’d be switching nationalities during the game 😏

Though have some interesting experiences watching England games the last few weeks - Slovakia was on the Rotterdam to Hull ferry where I got chatting to a nice couple from a Hull but they talked quite a lot during the game and missed Jude’s last minute overhead kick. Then went for a comfort break before extra time and missed Kane’s goal. Though came back to the wrong table and picked up ‘my’ pint only to hear ‘nice try mate’ from a rather huge heavily tattooed guy wearing sunglasses indoors - thankfully my apologies were accepted as I spotted my error 😂

Anyway, saw the Swiss quarter final in an English pub that was rammed shoulder-to-shoulder where beer was being served in 2-pint plastic glasses - needless to say everyone was buzzing.

However, I found myself on the wrong end of constant threats from a rather large guy behind me for blocking the view of his short wife. Anyway as the threats got more loud I decided to head off - as I started to leave a group of six foot six lads to my left said ‘you’re going nowhere mate - if he gives you anymore hassle we’ll punch his lights out for you - just say the word’.

At that moment with my back to the screen Saka equalized - another goal missed 🙈 Still the big guy with the short wife behind me then apologised having now seen I had a crew of bodyguards 😂

The evening ended with beer being thrown celebrating the penalty shootout victory and me declining to go all Ed Davey and join in singing Sweet Caroline with my bodyguard crew.

It was something of a relief to watch the Netherlands semifinal from the comfort of my sofa back in Germany but looking forward to experiencing another interesting evening for the final 🙂

Best team in the tournament, rightly won Euro 24 but I am proud of England and Gareth Southgate.

Come on BORO.

Well, the best team won . No complaints by England.

Having said how rubbish Southgate was and then saying the opposite going into this match, I now expect the press to slag him off having lost two consecutive finals.

Life can now go back to normal.

Watched the final in the campsite bar but it was a low turnout with maybe only 12-20 people of all ages and no visible tattoos even on the under 7’s. It wasn’t until Palmer scored that it revealed 4 people were supporting England - though probably in the same way I briefly support Liverpool when they play Chelsea.

Bit of an anticlimax in the end as Guehi’s knee turned out to be too big for VAR and Spain cemented themselves as the best team of the tournament.

As for England - well they never really looked the sum of their parts and often relied on moments of individual brilliance to bale them out. While Southgate has created a good team spirit among the club players he hasn’t discovered his best team and was perhaps was guilty of persisting with Kane who never really looked match fit after his injury lay-off at Bayern.

Still it’s not an easy job being England manager as it’s hard not to pick your individual best players and search for a better team balance. Damned if you pick them and damned if you leave them out - the only way to please everyone is to win trophies and that’s not easy with a part-time team.

At least Southgate has brought a sense of decency and self respect to the England manager role that has been in short supply for public figures of late. Plus has achieved best results of anyone before him in over half a century so he must know a bit about what he’s doing 🙂

I thought for a long  time that Man. U. are ripped off with the fees and salaries they pay . Recently agreed  around £40+ million including no doubt add ons. This is for an 18 year old central defender who has played 60 games in the French league.

As a comparison Boro’s young starlet defender must be worth a lot more than quoted.

Giles’ potential transfer has gone quiet - good.

Love it, if Boro signed Whittaker of Plymouth - young, a goal scorer and goal creator.

HELLO AGAIN, FELLOW DISABORIANS!

I realise I have been exercising a bit of radio silence recently. I have seen the thread about people putting themselves forward to create Match Previews for the forthcoming 2024-25 season. I have seen Len has offered to do a couple of the early games.

I am happy to contribute again but very happy to miss writing about the early games. Firstly I have not been paying attention to BORO over the "rest period" and secondly I expect to be away in my caravan at Beadnell on the Northumberland Coast for a period of about 12 nights beginning on Friday 26th July, after which my wife is keen for us to move up to (just outside) Edinburgh for another week or so, and even to go from Edinburgh for another week or so after that, to Stirling. So I am likely to be away for the early BORO games.

I am not sure whether a rota has yet been prepared for Match Previews but I am happy to join in, after maybe the first month or so of the season. Hopefully that doesn't cause any problems.

I will now read the other posts above. I thought I'd explain my position first, though....
