While other clubs are dumping their ladies squads, Boro are building theirs:

To me this good news:

https://www.mfc.co.uk/news/2024/july/05/law-mccabe-signs-new-boro-contract/

Come on BORO.

Yes, this is excellent news.

He played well on his full debut against Watford in May. I think Barlaser could be the 5th choice next season. Hackney, Howson, Morris and now McCabe fighting for a spot in the team.

Up the Boro!

Aiden Morris has not been selected in the USA Olympic squad therefore will be available for all pre season and friendlies.

@exmil More good news for Boro. But always a dissappointment for Aidan.

Also, Harley Hunt Signs from Swindon Town. The talented 16-year-old defender joins the U18 team in preferance to Boro. Also Aston Villa  and other EPL clubs were after him.

Reports saying an initial fee of £500k was agreeb with Boro, potentially rising another £1 million based on performance-related add-ons.

I'm wondering as anybody actually seen Mathew Hoppe play, seems from day one, they decided he's not any good ,how much did they pay, couple of million wasn't it.
How can you be so off a player

They ended up playing Gilbert reluctantly, but he looks quality, strange

Nobody seems to be commenting much on this but am I the only one who doesn't quite understand what is going on. I'm a little surprised that we should go after a 16yo at that price although everybody seems convinced that he is an absolute star in the making. Perhaps more surprising is that he and his team should choose Boro as a club. We have a strong squad of centre-halves including VDB,  Clarke, Fry, Lenihan and James Wilson who played against Watford. Where does Hunt fit into the pecking order and if he is only going to play U-18s and U-21s why come to Middlesbrough? Does this mean that our Academy and general style is viewed as so good that they believe that he will become a better player by training with us than going to an EPL academy?

Anyone have any thoughts? Are we underestimating how well our club is viewed?

Interestingly Hoppe has not gone to Portugal so possibly back in US looking for an MLS club when their window opens. Michael Carrick was also not in Portugal on Monday as he was pictured with Harley Hunt when he signed.

@mw-in-darwin.  Perhaps Carrick was in Portugal but the picture was only released by the club on Monday having been taken earlier?

Just noticed on the club website, pictures of the team training in Portugal on Monday and Carrick is there. 😎

@selwynoz.  I think he will be a development player for a year or so and part of the strategy of identifying young talent to bring on and sell in the future at a profit.

He has already played in the Swindon first team but I think a step up to the Championship is a bit far at the moment; perhaps the club see him as RvDB replacement when he moves on, as he undoubtedly will do. 😎

@k-p-in-spain

I agree with your reading of it. My surprise, or pleasure if you like, is that he and his management team chose to come to Boro when, apparently, he had so many clubs chasing him.

I think it is a sign of how well MC and Boro are developing young players and there is a clear pathway to the first team, what is the old saying “If you are good enough, your old enough”, I believe he will start in the U18’s and wouldn’t be surprised if he got game time in the U21’s during the season.

Come on BORO.

I really don’t understand Boro’s fascination with Ryan Giles, his appearance record since he left Boro one season ago:

Luton 11 appearances but only 5 starts

Hull 17 appearances only 11 starts (in those 17, only 1 assist)

Both those teams played attractive attacking football with very good managers, Rob Edward’s and Liam Rosenior. Even the season he was with Boro, he started off well but tailed off halfway through and defensively he is a disaster.

Come on BORO.

I see Ipswich are starting to splash the cash. Apparently??   20million for Delap and 18million for Philogene.

Good markers if any EPL team comes looking at any of the Boro squad.

Exmil.   agree fully about Giles. He had a very poor season just gone. And as you said, tailed off with us. Saying that, so did a number of other players when we played Coventry.

@exmil.  I agree with you on this one Exmil but is it really Boro’s fascination with Giles or something being pushed at the Hull end because of  the need to meet FFP regulations.

That being said, the sale of Philogene and Greaves for c.£40M from Ipswich should ease their worries. 😎

It is being reported that Boro are making a move for WBA attacking midfielder, John Swift aged 29 last month, he is in his last year of his contract.

@exmil.  Aren’t we awash with midfielders at the moment.  Sounds like paper talk to me. 😎

Good move.  We should have gone for Swift years ago when he left Reading. I suspect he is a Carrick /Woodgate prospective signing, since he does not fit with the dominant model of young project who can be sold on. He is an already established and proven Championship no 10  who will give us quality on the ball, dead ball expertise and more than his fair share of goals. Hope we can get him this time around.

According to Dom Shaw, a pretty reliable source I would have thought, in the Northern Echo, Boro had an interest in Swift which they have so far decided not to pursue, so it sounds a bit like the re-floating from more speculative sources of an old piece of news.

@pedro

The Ipswich transfer dealings are interesting as they give an indication of what Premier League clubs are willing to pay for young untested players at that level. Ipswich’s previous record transfer fee was 4.75 million pounds back in 2001 for an Italian Goalkeeper. They are also being linked with Greaves from Hull at a similar cost. If we go up do you think that we would spend that sort of money?

@mw-in-darwin

in EPL terms, these are not big transfer fees. The real hope, I would guess, is that we have a rapidly improving squad that has a lot of top class younger players with the ability to cope with the EPL with the addition of a few key signings.

There was further transfer joy earlier this week, indeed when Harley Hunt completed his move from Swindon. The 16-year-old will initially link up with the academy but Boro have first team hopes for the teenager down the line.

When will he be ready to play in the first team? I don't expect him to play much this season, perhaps coming on as a sub in the EPL Cup or some league matches later in the season.

But never say never as we found out yeaterday when Spain beat France. Spanish Lamine Yamal's history making goal for Spain against France in the semi-finals and he is 16 year old, too (17 years on Saturday). With Spain trailing 1-0, Yamal curled a brilliant strike from outside the box into the top corner to send him into the history books as the youngest scorer in the tournament.

So I am happy that Boro is buying young talent and not old farts looking for their last big payment in football. This is nearly as great a time as when we had Craig Johnston, Mark Proctor and David Hodgson in the team.

Up the Boro!

The Giles rumour doesn’t seem to be going away. To Boro I would say - you cannot be serious.

@exmil in Southgate we trust.

A pity that Keith Lamb met Strachan in a loo and Gareth was sacked as a Boro manager all those years back. A Boro legend as a player. And soon an England legend.

I had a lengthy meeting and examination, but a very positive one, with the Consultant yesterday and he's delighted with my progress even saying that I am a model patient in his eyes! The next meeting is to be at the end of October. Meantime he would like my to talk to patients who are about to have the same radical surgery as I underwent to put their minds at rest about their outcome. Now that was a turn-up for the book!

Anyway it's all positive and so is the Boro news on recruitment, we may not agree with some of the planning but at least there is a plan. Tonight a couple of pints of Timothy Taylor Landlord to celebrate but always with the caveat of 'don't overdo it' ringing in my ears.

All the best everyone and UTB.

@john-richardson.  Excellent news John.  So pleased that you are making such positive progress.

I am sure that you sharing your positive experiences with others will bring them much comfort and reassurance whilst awaiting their surgery.  Well done on sharing. 😎
