Just cannot understand the statements coming out from Mr Wilder about his required additions and one being a striker. I would assume that that person would have to be an Akpom/Muniz type but proven at our level and in the Championship. However the cost of that and probably their wages would make it too much of a step even with all this new found money.

And as KP has just said, we’re desperate for that LCB and for an upgrade defensive midfielder to replace Howson.

A paper claiming Stoke to beat Boro for the Brighton defender: https://footballleagueworld.co.uk/exclusive-stoke-city-set-to-pip-middlesbrough-to-transfer-agreement-for-brighton-defender/

Matt Clarke set to arrive on Teesside on Tuesday to undergo his medical. A fee agreed with Brighton. And he is left-footed defender.

Up the Boro!

PS. The 25-year-old has less hair than Spike Amstrong had at that age. Often shaved, he played for WBA last season on loan.

He was also WBA supporters player of the season last year, before that he was at Derby for two seasons in the championship, regular starter.

Come on BORO.

So the Potters fail in their bid to hijack the deal because they were looking for a loan & already have five loanees, so Michael O'Neil would have been faced with a dilemma each weekend to decide which of six to leave out.  Boro's deal, on the other hand, is apparently permanent:

https://the72.co.uk/2022/08/23/middlesbrough-agree-2-25m-deal-for-premier-league-defender-medical-set/

However, it looks as though Duncan Watmore may be on his way out:

Sky Transfer Centre Reporting:

Boro interested in Preston striker Jakobsen

Middlesbrough remain interested in Preston forward Emil Riis Jakobsen.

No formal bid has been submitted as yet, but possible fees have been discussed.

Sky Sports News has been told Boro first enquired about Jakobsen last week, but were told that Preston don’t want to sell the man who scored 20 goals last season.

It’s thought Preston are seeking a club record fee of £10m for the Danish striker. 😎

Do we think one season where he scored 16 league goals in 44 appearances, makes him a £10m player, previous season 38 appearances scored 2 league goals.

Come on BORO.

Definitely not, I hope it is all just press speculation.  £2M-£3M might be worth a punt but we appear to be recruiting too many projects/ones for the future.  This doesn’t sound like a cohesive promotion strategy to me. 😎

It may only be internet talk, but then Mr Wilder is desperate for another "striker".

Riis as he tends to go by, could be just a one season wonder as exmil says.

However, MFC Recruitment could just do a typical and we sign him at a way over the odds fee.

Now that would a gamble too far.

Anyone heard of this young man:

https://footballleagueworld.co.uk/opinion-middlesbrough-should-rival-sunderland-for-psg-talent/

Mentioned as a possible replacement for Tav - attacking midfielder, but only 19...

We have six (!) strikers at Boro now. And still looking for one to arrive?

@Strcrazy But a midfielder is a must now. I do not know the lad but one more is needed in midfield. He is very young but must be interesting if he's played a few matches at PSG considering his age.

Up the Boro!

Really good recruitment to get a player like that for such a reasonable fee.

As we're heading towards the midnight hour, we seem to be repeating last summer with a twin-track approach of experienced/loan players for the manager and "development" players for the club. With Scott in position (officially) now he does seem to be working better with Wilder so it looks, so far, like a reasonable window.

Steffen, Giles, Lenihan, Clarke, Mowatt, Smith and Roberts all feel like classic Wilder signings. Each one has been bought to go straight into the team or onto the bench. With the exception of the keepers, they are all experienced and proven at this level. Steffen is playing the same role Henderson did at Sheffield Utd.

Wilder seems to have decided that Forss and Hoppe are "development" signings. Muniz is an odd one. He's definitely not a player Wilder has interest in but seems like a compromise based on the club's previous scouting. Wilder seems reasonably enthusiastic about him but clearly wants more. Akpom is this season's "like a new signing" cliche.

I see that there are rumours about Josh Windass; he does seem like a Wilder style signing and a reasonable back-up for the right and centre of midfield especially if we end up playing with a #10 from time to time. Windass is somewhere between McGree and Watmore and could probably play the #10/second striker role more effectively than Watmore or replace Crooks on the right of midfield.

I'm sure we are looking for someone to replace or supplement Howson and that Wilder would like that to be a "marquee" signing. We're also clearly looking for a marquee striker but I can't help thinking that we're better off not over-paying at this point because we risk ending up putting too many eggs in that basket.

@original-fat-bob

yes it is and I would always prefer to have a good rumour to hug to my chest even if it turns out to be totally false. In any case, it's getting pretty close to the deadline and we definitely need to find a diasboro correspondent to set up shop somewhere. Is the Tontine still the place or should it now be the carpark of Raby Hunt or the Black Swan.

Good hunting

Sky Transfer Centre reporting:

Boro give up on signing Jakobsen

Middlesbrough have given up in their attempts to sign Preston North Endforward Emil Riis Jakobsen.

Preston - who are advised by former Leeds Chairman Peter Ridsdale - are adamant they don’t want to sell the man who scored 20 goals last season, unless someone is willing to pay a club record £10m for the Danish striker.

Boro have now turned their attentions to other forward targets. 😎

Wednesday gone and no new signings yet. A bit worried as about (!) 24 hours left.

I would prefer two midfielders now. And Wilder wants an experienced striker, too.

Up the Boro!

Here in Dalyan Turkey, 2 hours ahead and of nothing of importance on the Boro front yet. Unless there is a dramatic signing later, do you think Scott and the recruitment team have done any better than last time?

@malcolm

Yes. Large turnaround that will take some time to click but, on paper at least, they’ve brought in a number of players that fit the template for not a great deal of money.

Hoppe still seems one too far for me (Ashley Fletcher vibes) but we’ll have to see how he develops. Can’t see  a problem with anyone else they’ve brought in.

@malcolm  Yes, we have bought quite nicely. But the problem is that we were originally in a sitution where we needed to buy 10 to 12 new players in one transfer window. So no long term planning in 2021.

And this window has been very, very difficult for a buying club.

So well done so far - but we have not yet replaced Martin Payero on the right side, for example.

If we won't get one - preferably two - midfielders,  we might be in trouble. But hopefully there will be a chance or two for up-coming academy players, though.

Been a very quiet week. Unfortunately. Up the Boro!

So no new players arriving during the last week of the transfer window.  Not even one midfielder 😔.

We did let one winger to go on a free transfer in Sam Folarin to  Harrogate Town. And Josh Coburn joined Bristol Rovers on loan (presumably when back fit).

We should not have let Martin Payero to go on loan before we had signed a replacement in my opinion. Now we have two gaps in midfield (also cover for Howson). Of course it helps that we have Paddy McNair who is able to play there. But then he is away from the defence.

Does anyone know if we have any desent youngsters available from the academy? I think there is a lad called Joseph Gibson (right side of midfield) but did we play any other youngsters there in midfield during the pre-season matches?

So work in progress still. Hope we survive until January. Up the Boro!

To continue my latest post on here.

On Twitter someone said (or should I say sang):

• Joe Gibson, Right Midfield and right-footed, 20 yr old

• Hayden Hackney, Central Midfield, 20 yr old

• Kamil Conteh, Central Midfield and right-footed,  19 yr old

I cannot think any other for cover in midfield.  Up the Boro!

There will be one very unhappy man this morning probably after a sleepless night. Still on the up side it will give him the excuses he will need if things do not improve.
I am pleased at least we did not buy another forward. I have also got to agree with Clive about the Hoppe and Coburn scenario. Hopefully the later will get more game time that the former is likely to. How we will develop the former or Forss as Werder said is up for debate surely.

In the end ten players in, but not in all the right areas. The midfield is short of quality and pace and it shows. Not sure we will be able to improve sufficient for even a top half place.
