Thanks RR for the report and happy birthday Selwynoz - a decent present for you.

So the rebuild starts now, and what a rebuild it needs to be. The biggest summer we've had for some time I would say - even more than last year - with less time and do it and probably less money as well. Crikey. Some good posts on this on the Speculation on Appointments and Players forum.

First and only post on the OFB fallout from me: I think the perception of this is hugely influenced by the tone of voice in which you read the original post. If you read in an accusatory tone, it can feel just that but take a conciliatory tone and it's anything but. Either way, we're all grown-ups on a greatly cherished blog and we owe it to each other to remember what we have here. Thanks to every single one of you who reads and contributes to it.

So in the end we made it and it would appe.........

———————————

We interrupt this post to go straight to Teesside Airport where the unexpected arrival of Air Force One had plane spotters in rapture. Let’s listen to what the President has to say....

“Thank you very much, everybody. Thank you. Thank you. Great honor. Please, thank you. Sit down, please. It’s great to be with you. Great company and wonderful location. Quick flight. It’s in and out, but we have some big things to say. Neil, I want to thank you also for doing such an incredible job at this company. I look at your numbers and I’m very jealous. A lot of people are very jealous. But I’m delighted to be back in Middlesbrough  Cleveland special place. The hometown of one of the most amazing football clubs on earth, MFC They never fail. The dedicated men and women of MFC are an inspiration to us all. In the face of every challenge, you always come through for your fellow citizens. Would you say that’s correct? I say it’s correct.

We’re also pleased to be joined by a great Chairman, somebody that’s done a phenomenal job. And I can tell you, look, he’s a friend of mine, so I’m a little prejudiced, but he’s a man that’s respected by everybody on both sides of the River Tees. He works hard. He loves your club. And I always say, does Steven get the kind of recognition that he deserves? Because he is a very, very special man. Steven Gibson, where is Steven? Steven thank you. And a man who’s come in and done a great job. And he’s  been so supportive of me and the agenda, and a good person, a good man with his team who’s a terrific team, Manager Neil Warnock. Thank you very much. Thank you, Neil Great job, Neil.

As you know I guaranteed three points from last night’s game, and what can I say, I delivered,  yes, I delivered but the important thing now is the future. So I say to you all let’s stick together and....”

It almost feels like the end of term when I was a schoolboy, well it actually is of course. But thanks to all our contributors on this forum, and as young Mr Grace would say as he brandishes his walking stick “You’ve all done very well”. Of course special mention must be given to Werdermouth for his hard work in establishing this new forum which with a little navigation has made it easy to find various opinion forums on football in general, transfer targets, and maybe even cricket if rain doesn’t stop play. I’m probably one of the few who knew about Werder Bremen’s escape from relegation as I’ve always followed the top European Leagues week by week and am glad also that Eintracht Frankfurt finished with a flourish when it did look at one time that they might be drawn into a relegation situation. Now I’m hoping that Portimonense can win their final match against Desporto Aves this weekend in Portugal to maintain their Superliga place especially as Farense SC have been promoted as I will always have a place in my heart for the Algarve. It’s good to have a Headmaster or moderator to make sure that the normal rules of courtesy and etiquette are observed which makes this arguably the best run forum that any football club, especially Boro deserves and Werdermouth is that man.

Also week after week, and match after match we are treated to the best reports of our great football club from Redcar Red. I say a great football club, because history proves that it to be so. His reports might I suggest, be repeated on a forum of their own at the end of each season as a biography for those who wish to recount them in the future. Okay, some of the reports may not make happy reading for the present season, and not make happy writing either for Redcar Red, but I do feel that they are a useful form of reference in the future if only for their eloquence.

I mentioned a year or so ago that if there was to be an Alistair Brownlee award for Boro’s greatest supporter it should be awarded to Jarkko. Not only has he taken Boro to his heart, but also the countryside of North Yorkshire. What’s more like Ali he is so positive in his thoughts about our beloved club, when many of us are probably a little prone to paranoia. Also to take up the mantle of previewing our last match of the season in English, which let’s not forget is not his mother tongue, was exemplary.

Let’s not forget Original Fat Bob either. He is our observer ‘through the keyhole’ as it were, who has always come up trumps with his inside contacts behind closed doors with information that most Boro fans are not privy to. We miss his interviews and his witticisms, and long may they continue.

Whilst there is no football to watch, report or listen to, I shall be reading John Nicholson’s book ‘Can we have our Football back’ which I’m indebted to Grove Hill Wallah for sending to me. In view of the report by the Government that 10 to 15 EFL clubs may well go bust following the Coronavirus pandemic, it appears to me that we should now have a Premier League 2 with 20 clubs, and that some of the outrageous sums of money supplied to the Premier League from Sky Sports and other broadcasters should filter downwards especially as the Championship is one of highest watched leagues in Europe.

For myself in between hoping to watch some Rugby League and cricket I hope to continue writing a series of what I consider to be the 20 most significant Boro League seasons, mainly promotion ones, in my History of the 20 seasons which can be found on this new Diasboro forum. So far I’ve reviewed 5 of them which include each match in chronological order but including goalscorers and crowd attendances for home matches. Six of those seasons were before the Second World War but the other 14 will be post war seasons. After that I hope to review each of the great FA Cup and League Cup runs in the same format. I not only find it cathartic but also it keeps me awake, whereas I tend to fall asleep watching television.

So perhaps you might not find me contributing so much on the close season events, but I’ll still be keeping a watching brief. So ate breve or au revoir for now.

@grovehillwallah

Well spoofed! The 'Big Donald' begins to sound a little 'intro outro' by the 'Bonzo Dog Do Dah Band', I must listen to it again.

Sorry, I think the excitement of another season following The Boro over has got to me.

Do I need a glass of wine?

UTB,

John

Thanks RR for your match report which had a happy ending, eventually.  Thanks for all your reports and enjoy the break.  I hope your trauma counseling sessions during the closed season are therapeutic!

Thanks also to Werder and Jarkko for their pre-match articles and I hope Weder enjoys his holiday.  Belated Birthday greetings to Selwynoz.

Well it's over and my 100% record of getting our final match results wrong is intact, I am pleased to say.  Some dignity and self pride was restored by the team last night as they managed to stay in the league through their own endeavours.

As so often, not a lot of quality on show but a gritty hardworking team performance and a match which looked as if it would finish as a draw but in the end we won and were deserving of it in my view.  Tav had another very good game but similar to Roberts, managed to frustrate at times by holding onto the ball too long or failing to make the pass at the appropriate time.  I dare say if he gets more time with NW, his decision making and undoubted skills can only improve.

It was good to see the tactics last night and that Barry Bannan had been singled out for close attention with a view to stop him dictating the play, which by and large worked very well.  An example of having a wise old head(s) on the touchline and not something we saw under JW.

George Friend had an excellent game and in my view is deserving of another contract as when he is employed in a fully defensive role and, particularly at left back, he is as good still as any in this league.  If this is his last game then I wish him all the very best for the future and thank him for all he has achieved during his time at MFC and similarly Adam Clayton, they have both conducted themselves in an exemplary manner and have been loyal servants of the club.  Good luck to them both for the future.

So we await the next saga in the life of an MFC supporter!

Best wishes to all and have a safe and enjoyable summer break. 😎 😀

Good post Ken, enjoy the summer break, the new season will be here soon enough.

Its going to be an interesting summer in terms of who comes and goes.

I assume if there's a bite for Brit he'll be gone, but is that likely? I assume there aren't many clubs who will be able to meet his wage demands. Gazette i think that there may be interest in McNair. Presumably any/all offers will be considered in order to raise cash for a rebuild.

My son is desperate to see Ben Gibson back but that strikes me as unlikely but not impossible.

I am surprised that it looks like Johnson is looking likely to be offered a new contract, i think he's rubbish, but what do i know! A new contract for Friend also surprises me a little, but less so. He seems to struggle for consistency these days and is injury prone now. But maybe his other 'soft' skills are seen as being valuable enough for the club to want to keep him.

NW has had a few weeks to start to make his mark and introduce his philosophy on the club, which assuming he stays will give him a bit of a head start in pre-season training. Hopefully that means he can get the players in he needs and get the squad comfortable with his style so we can make a positive start come September. Challenging for the top six next year would be fantastic, but quite a stretch given where we currently are.

Strong home form would be a good start.

Finally, i believe challenging felllow bloggers, providing it is done in a civilized manner is a good thing. It leads to healthy debate which adds to the richness of the blog. We aren't journalists but surely anyone publishing a post on a blog must be prepared to be challenged?

@nigelreeve

Nigel, Nigel, playoff form, with four awful home defeats on the trot (against, I might say, the dregs of the Champ), who can forget the nightmare of Hull, a throughly deserved beating from the acknowledged worst team in this league, and I might forecast the league they are playing in next season.

Hi Plato, i agree with everything you say, there were some horrible performances from Boro in the last eight games. I saw most of them on tv and came away from at least two convinced we were going down because we played so badly.

But, 12 points from eight games is play off form. That said to get from where we are now to top six next year feels like a huge leap even though Neil Warnock took Cardiff from the brink of relegation to automatic promotion in one year.

Can he do it again? At least there's something to dream about now.

Great reply, I was joking of course, but the worry is that nothing can be achieved without great home form, and that statement applies to the Liverpool's as well as us.

My sincere thanks to all bloggers on here for all your efforts. And especial thanks go to Werder for everything (!), to RR for incredible service beyond the call of duty and in the face of some of the worst football ever from Boro, and also to OFB for continuing insights and to Ken for magnificent pieces on Boro’s history. May you all have a thoroughly relaxing and very well-earned summer break.

Thank goodness one of the worst seasons ever has ended and with Boro still in the Champo. Boro will be back in action in a mere 49 days. We have a huge amount of development work to do in that time. I have faith in NW, though and really hope he stays. If anybody can turn the club around he can.

I have a couple of ideas for articles myself to help tide us over the summer recess. All I have to do is to find the time to write them. Cheers everybody.
