@lenmasterman

Nice comment on the great Jack Charlton. A powerful presence at the club and no one Dissed us while he was our boss. I suppose a telling indication of, ' be careful who you employ to represent your organisation'

Difficult to realise just how good we were under him, a last six fixtures relaxation by the players cost us dear.

But what a wonderful career, lived at the top, and to the full. Farwell Jack.

sad news about Big Jack. A big part of our history and as a spotty youth I obtained his autograph outside Ayresome Park. I do remember him wearing that sheepskin coat!

He will be sadly missed by all and condolences to his family.

What can you say about Jack Charlton. He was the manager that put MFC on the footballing map in the 70’s and I was there for the ride, and what a ride it was!

I was 18 when he was appointed and whilst many align their youth with a certain music genre, for me it was all things Boro. Along with a group of mates ( some sadly no longer with us) we traversed they country following the team to every game.

A lot will be written about him today, I’d just like to offer him a heartfelt thank you for all the memories of those times that I cherish.

God Bless you Jack.

Great news to hear Allan is back and fighting fit or at least feeling better.

Very sad news about Big Jack, for me the greatest Boro Manager who put us back on the map after years in the doldrums of being nearly men. That's not to say that Rioch or McClaren of course are not up there but for me it was Jack and his band that gave Boro meaning and that all important identity or at least differentiation at a time when you either played in red or blue shirts or had stripes. Finishing seventh was no mean feat either. Using psychology in his approach and common sense in being able to spot Boro shirts in crowded stadiums was ahead of its time in those days.

The Luton result last night had me a little confused as I wanted them both to lose and failing that then a draw but that would have meant the Terriers going a point above us so I guess the Hatters winning was probably marginally for the best. The bottom line is that regardless of who beats who it is in our own hands and if we pick up enough points it shouldn't matter in the end. Having said that I shudder to think how we will all feel at 5.00 pm this evening if we lose perish the thought!

Jack Charlton will always be remembered by Boro fans as the first man to get Boro promoted in his inaugural season as a Boro manager, Bryan Robson being the second. But Leeds United fans will remember him for his staggering number of 773 appearances for the club which nowadays I doubt will ever be exceeded in the modern game. He was one of the first centrehalves to make a nuisance of himself in opponents penalty areas with 85 goals mainly from set pieces. It’s also ironic that along with the recent deaths of Norman Hunter and Trevor Cherry that Leeds should lose 3 of their finest players in the year that the club look certain to return to the Premier League. Whilst a Leeds player and sometimes as Boro manager he could frequently be seen at Castleford’s home matches on Friday nights down t’Lane. Jack also played for England on 35 occasions and scored 8 times, not a bad return for a centre half. and of course will also be remembered as arguably the greatest manager/coach that the Republic of Ireland have ever had.

I expect that the Boro players will wear black armbands today and would hope  that a minute’s silence is observed rather than a minute’s applause. Condolences to the Charlton and Milburn families on their loss, and rest in peace to a man who was as successful as a manager as he was as a player.

Werder, is it appropriate to have a big Jack tribute thread?

Yes, it would probably be good to have a big Jack tribute thread - maybe someone who can better recall his time at Boro could start one as I'm afraid I was only 8 years old when he became manager of Boro and was actually living in what was Rhodesia at the time.

A nice 15 minute tribute to Jack on Football Focus this morning. Also mentioned that all teams in the Premier League will wear black armbands in this weekend’s fixtures and that a minute’s silence will be observed at all Premier League matches.

And so to today’s game - a minutes silence would be appropriate although in normal times 1 minutes applause at the Riverside would have been probably what would have happened.

What I would like to see is the current crop of players put in a battling performance for 3 vital points which would almost Guarantee safety.

Hopefully NW will stick with a winning team and formation and if he does then I will predict a 2 0 victory for Boro.

if he tinkers, then all bets are off!

No surprise to see Neil Warnock has gone for the same team as Millwall - hopefully it will be the same score!

Fry’s just creamed one over the bar from six yards out. Should be 1-1

Midfield anonymous, showing their lack of pace. BC winning second balls. Tav would have made some difference, however if the opposition MF has pace we struggle.

This is QPR all over again.  We are getting a football lesson.  Need to get a grip in midfield and close them down quicker.  Our passing leaves a lot to be desired again.  CoB don't waste your opportunities! 😎

Obviously Boro are trying to maintain the excitement and are playing for an heroic draw. In reality it is typical bloody-minded Boro. the opposition haven't won away since blah, blah, blah. they're between managers. We on on whenever it was. Ease of and make it difficult to really difficult. Not forgetting goal difference. Otherwise known as back to normal whatever that is.

Have Boro ever come back from 0 - 2 down this season?

Looks like the Pilsener Urquel will be on sorrow drowning duty.

UTB,

John

BC the better team, passing and moving really well at times and we haven’t been able to cope. Credit to them.

The scoreline though is a case of being on the wrong side of fine margins for me. Great strike from Wells who was in a bit of space but that was a low percentage effort - unfortunately for us it hit the top corner.

For the second, well I don’t know how he scored from there. Another low percentage effort that went against us. Was the keeper partly at fault for both?

At the other end, I don’t know how Fry didn’t score and the keeper made a good save from a set-piece scramble. A few other skirmishes in the 6yrd box too.

Could easily have been 3-3 or more but the big moments have gone against us.

Need to score early in the second half to have any chance.

Too many balls being lofted forward bypassing the midfield. I’d like to see a replay of the second goal again, it looked like City’s keeper released the ball from his hand outside the area.

I appreciate that Stojanovic has made some good saves recently and kept us in games but what more, if anything, does he add than Pears.  At times his positioning is questionable and he does not dominate his six yard box.

i just can't see any way back as we are back to square one, clunky and relying on dead ball situations of which we have had plenty but not capitalised on any of them. At this rate we are going to be relying on club's around us not performing. 😎

Boro look off the pace today and to be fair Bristol City have looked sharp from the offset - no chance with their first goal but despite a good strike for the second, it wasn't a shot that should have been conceded.

Boro have been only dangerous from set pieces, which was always my worry with the current midfield and striker combination - we need two goals in the second half and that will mean changes at half-time - Roberts and Tav for Saville and Britt is probably what is needed.

Hopefully the score doesn't get worse and puts a dent into our goal difference!

Bristol City came out and played something called football, a phenomenon too rarely seen at the Riverside.

It's almost as though ex-manger Lee Johnson has created a golden thread of fast, attractive, penetrative football that has survived his recent departure.

At least we have had a glimpse of what awaits us next season if Warnock stays: old-fashioned, and wholehearted reliance on long balls and set plays. We'll probably survive, but it won't be pretty, and represents a style of play that most of us have had quite enough of.

What concerns me is that the MF three that started today and recent games, are all still under contract and probably stuck with them next season. None have pace and none have creativity. We will always struggle playing those players.
