@selwynoz Yes, my typing error. It is October 4th, next Sunday. 😊

In Finnish September is syyskuu ("Autumn Month"), October is lokakuu ("Mud/Sludge Month"). And naturally December is joulukuu ("Yule Month"). "Kuu" means both moon and month. So totally different to the rest of the Europe!

I usually have problems with June and July only - I always double check the names when talking and especially writing.

Up the Boro!

@jarkko - I have tickets for the Legacy game on Sunday - going up with my daughter (Boro Becky!) who arranged the trip for us. She was very keen to go - mind you she is an archaeologist so likes seeing old things!!

Looking forward to it and be interesting to see who actually gets onto the pitch to play - I suspect there will be a lot of substitutions given the ages of those who will be there - Juninho is 53 now and Ravanelli 57. Don’t expect Derek Downing or Frank Spraggon to get any pitch time though.

See if Alves can add to his 10 goals he scored for us!

@boro-beckys-dad No, its not snow yet. Marras is such an old word, that I had to google it!

Its prefix 'marras' is a very old Indo-European loanword meaning 'dead' or 'dying'. November (marraskuu) could therefore refer to the fact that at that time of year, nature dies or, in fact, settles into winter dormancy.

Hope you and your lass will enjoy the event. I wiss I was able to join in, too.

The first Boro player I ever met was Terry Cochrane.  I had a cuppa with him during my first ever visit abroad. And that was Boro via London in 1980. He is still my all time hero of the Boro players. Mind, I also met David Armstrong's mother and sister for a cuppa after a match in 1980. The whole club is so friendly I worship it for ever.

As our language is not related to any other languages in Europe except Estonian and very distantly Hungarian, I have not studied latin.

So I now found out, too that In many other European languages, the name for November is based on the Latin numeral novem, meaning nine. This stems from the fact that for the Romans, March was the first month of the year, making November the ninth.

Interesting. Should have found that out sooner.

Up the blog and Boro!

I will be there with Offspring and grandchildren. I well remember the original Downing tearing down the left wing and scoring with diving headers (or have I made that up?). If I remember correctly, Frank Spraggon played in a number of positions before settling into a role as a solid left half. I’m looking forward to seeing those older players to see if they’ve aged any better than me 😀

@dormo Haven't heard from you for a while. And as I know you do camping all year around, I hope you are not in dormancy yet?

Not a good joke, I admit. But I learned a new word again.

I will text you later today. Up the Boro!

Do you mean Steau Bucharest, perhaps? A Downing cross and Maccarone's header ...

I was referring to Derrick Downing who was with us in the Stan Anderson era, which is why I questioned my recollections.

Apologies. Reading that back it appears a bit abrupt and dismissive, which was not my intention. I am, by nature, a man of few words. I’m always in awe of your command of our language and enjoy your posts.

The one that comes to my mind is a diving Derrick Downing header from an Alex Smith cross against West Ham in the FA Cup.

None of it may be true, but that's what's come to lodge in my memory.

Sorry, I mixed up the two Downings. The former is a name I have heard but he was before my time. I became a fan in 1970, but as said paid my first visit in 1980. Boro were on the National TV in here a few times before that. So I remember the FA Cup win over Arsenal - my brother's favourite team - on TV. It was 4-1 win with a David Mills hat-trick and David Armstrong scoring the other. on Feb 5, 1977.  That is the first match I can actually remember but there might have been a couple on TV before that.

Anthony Vickers wrote on Legacy Numbers book:

"Flying (left) winger Derrick Downing was a fixture and fan's favourite over solid six seasons. He was rapid down the flanks and could whip in an accurate cross or cut inside to get a shot off and had a habbit of lauching into a brave diving headers. He was also industrious and always willing to track back and put a tackle in. His heart in the sleeve made him an idol for the newly founded Ayresome Angels."

Derrick came from non-League and left Boro after 213 appearances and 49 goals for Orient and played later at York and Hartlepool (as a left-back since joining Orient). He was born 3 November 1945.

Nice to see you commenting here. No hard feelings from my side!

The Derrick Downing and Frank Spraggon era was when I was a nipper and being indoctrinated into  Boro by my Dad!

I must try and find the scrap book that I made for the 70/71 season when I had all the match reports from the Pink ‘Un which my Grandma sent down to my Dad every week along with Shoot (I think) for me and Bunty or some such for my sister.

The diving headers were definitely a thing as Jarkko has highlighted and I  certainly will have a photo of one in the scrap book.

Willie Whigham in goal, Spraggon, Bill Gates, Gordon Jones, Willie Maddren, Joe Laidlow, Eric McMordie, Hughie McMillmoyle, Derrick Downing, John Hickton.

Not sure how many of Big Jacks team will be there.

@jarkko  Thanks for the update on the Finnish language Jarkko - much appreciated.

I remember having a conversation with a Finnish tour guide when we were in Northern Norway and making the mistake of saying that Finnish must be similar to all the other Scandinavian languages! Of course, it isn’t and closer to Russian she said.

It never ceases to amaze me that your English is so much better than any other language that I attempt to speak - in fact your English is probably better than my English!!

I was at the game and recall Downing's diving header vividly. The West Ham team had all of their World Cup winners involved and took the lead. Downing's goal was the winner. Highie Mcilmoyle scored the equalizer.

I am pretty sure I was at that game as well as a 9 year old sitting in the wooden seats behind the goal!

Didn’t Bobby Moore get booked in that game?

One thing I do remember is that my Dad was not allowed into the ground as he was wearing his walking boots! My cousin and I went in on our own whilst he nipped back to my Grandmas house on Costa Street to change footwear!

The irony was that my uncle went go to the games  (not that one as he was ill) in his ICI steel toe capped shoes!!

I rather enjoyed going back to school since we lived in Essex and the local team which many of my friends supported was West Ham!!

One important correction. OUR language is not related to Russian at all. We have our own language group with only Finnish, Estonian and (very distantly) Hungarian in that whole linguistic group.

Russia is close (the border is just two hours drive from my home) but the languages (and alphabets) are totally different and no way related.

Up the Boro!

Another 75 minutes for Strelec, but no goal unfortunately. McGree gets 20 minutes.

Another goal and assist for Seb Berhalter in a 4-2 USA win against Chile. He played 80+ minutes.

All of those great memories of that West Ham Cup win accord with my own. Bobby Moore was indeed booked, and I had the exquisite pleasure of seeing and hearing the ref come over to the near touchline and saying to him, " What's your name?".

@jarkko - I knew the writing part was different but I don’t think I have ever heard Finnish being spoken.

Still no sign of a decision on the Spygate case? How can it be taking so long to come up with a conclusion? I’ll be staggered if we get to the end of the International break without an announcement.

Just watched the Under 21's playing Juventus on YouTube. They won 1-0 against a much better technical team that lacked a cutting edge. There were very few chances in the game which was settled by a cracking goal by substitute who has the same running style as Kyle Joseph. Although they won I don't think many are ready to join the first team squad. One who did show up well was Tyler Smith, a left sided wing back / left midfield. He had a turn of pace and worked hard all game. On the other hand Cruz Ibeh was most disappointing. Seems to have a bit of an ego about him. He was squabbling with his team mates about who should take  a free kick taking the ball and then proceeded to shoot well over the bar.

@mw-in-darwin

interesting to get your view.

I saw the result and decided to watch the last twenty minutes just to get a taste and in that period, the Boro U21s seemed to have a good control of the match, keeping possession well and frustrating the opposition. The goal itself was one of those power shots that are very hard to save, hit upwards against the underside of the bar.

Was this period of the game different from the rest and, if so, could it have been better fitness?

It’s probably worth people taking a look.

The match was a pretty cagey affair throughout. We got caught on the break a few times but Juve never really created many clear cut chances, and the Boro keeper never had to make a hard save. The Italians made 4 subs in one go and this seemed to disrupt them as the replacements were not of the same level, but the Boro subs added a bit of energy to our play and we then controlled the midfield.

Thanks. I did think that the last twenty minutes showed a sense that the Academy is playing football that is in synch with the KH style. It will be interesting to see how they progress. There is an interesting CJ article in the Gazette listing 14 possible first team players amongst the youth. Here is a link but it might not work.
