Early lead for Boro: McGree in the fifth minute!
CJ:
Boro keep possession as a cross is cleared. Brittain takes it up on the right. Southampton expect the cross towards goal. He pulls a low one back to McGree, who arrives just inside the box and he produces an excellent finish.

McGree then booked eight minutes later! CJ:
Nasty tackle on Charles. Studs were up and into the ankle. Was no force behind it though, which gets him off.
Ayling booked in the 39th minute - CJ:
He's very angry and the referee books him. But he was upset about something that was said, and it's now been reported. Speaking about it with two managers who end up arguing. No idea what's said. Ayling was furious whatever it was.
A few minutes earlier, this comment appeared on the Beeb site after Callum Brittain apparently pulled back Ross Stewart in the box:
So looks like EFL have decided to punish Saints by not awarding clear fouls. Pulling a man down by the shirt so they can’t react to a loose ball would be a foul anywhere else on the pitch.
Bugger! Saints have equalised in the first minute of injury time (Stewart...). 🙁
Well the last 10 mins it looked as if they were getting on top and so it proved with an equaliser at the wrong time. Long second half in prospect I fear. ☹️😎
Well we have broken our Play off scoring duck but couldn't hold on. Listening on Tees seems like we are giving away too many silly free kicks and they have the players to deliver dangerous balls into the box. As KP said a long second 45 minutes I fear.
Three soton players involved in keeping Dale Fry on the ground to leave that free header for the Sinners
DO THE BASICS
Excellent first half from Boro until almost half time.
Southampton get a free kick and no one marks the player at the back post who is ideally placed for a shot. Brynn makes a good save but a Southampton player heads the ball in . A sloppy goal which will now change momentum.
I expect Southampton to come out all guns blazing and take control of the game and the challenge for Boro is, can they score a breakaway goal.
Dissappointed because apart from the above mistake it was the perfect half for Boro.
Fingers crossed again.
philip of Huddersfield 🤔🤔👍
Well that was a pretty intense first half that ended up quite heated - not sure their free kick that ended up being an equaliser was really a foul - likewise the free kick against Conway when he was in on goal wasn't a foul and then their keeper tried to pretend he's been hit in the face - very poor.
I think I'd maybe take off Strelec (who has done very little and has had a poor first touch) and bring on Brown and move McGree further up the pitch since his yellow card is a risk when trying to stop then running forward. Next goal crucial!
It was a really really stupid and soft free kick we gave away from which they scored.
IT is going to be a long long second half and I am not sure any one who has heart issues should be watching or listening!
@werdermouth agree about next goal - we need to break our habit of only winning one half of a game and come out fighting
Still all to play for, I suppose, but I fear the worst... No changes at the start of the second half.
Never a free kick, and that goal should have been disallowed for the multiple player foul on Fry. Maybe a biased view, but very lucky.
The referee, supposably an EPL one, has let all sorts go from the Southampton side. It’s going to be a hard struggle though to contain the home side.
Werder is right, Strelec has not been in the game at all and his touch poor.
Ooh. Kuryu Matsuki looks to have got away with one in the box as his trailing arm deflects a bouncing ball away from a blue shirt.
Andy Madley signals it came off his shoulder, but replays suggest otherwise.
No VAR in the Championship, remember, but Madley is usually a Premier League ref.
If there had been VAR, we would have had two (!) penalties already. One in each half. Just saying, like.
Up the Boro!
Browne on for Conway in the 72nd minute (injury). 🙁
A third yellow for Boro: Malanda in the 77th minute.
Browne on for Conway in the 72nd minute (injury). 🙁
Leo Castledine on for David Strelec in the 83rd minute.
Tempers fraying - the Beeb:
Aidan Morris seems to tug the ball out of the grasp of a ballboy who was reluctant to give it to team-mate Matt Targett and the Saints subs rush over to drag him away.
Cam Archer among the Saints subs sent on, also in the 83rd minute..
FIVE minutes of injury time before we see which of the sides is the less tired...
Lots of tired legs and we have not had a shot on target this half.
Under the cosh in the second half but we’re still in it.
Massive 30 minutes to come.
This is tense - the game has gone into extra beer!
@mw-in-darwin. “No VAR in the Championship, remember, but Madley is usually a Premier League ref.”
Yes but not a particularly good one. 😎
I’d take penalties now. Lots of tired Boro legs.
No subs who could be a match winner.
Fingers crossed for a long 30 minutes.
Whatever the result the lads have done us proud
philip of Huddersfield 👍👍
This is going to be a rather difficult 30 minutes for Boro. Southampton have he subs that make a difference in the it is like for like in quality almost.
Were as we have Hansen, Sarmiento and Silvera to come on.
Maddo after the first half of extra time:
Boro can't really hurt Southampton with the personnel out there. They had a spell earlier but they didn't build any momentum.
It's swung the other way now as Southampton have got the momentum and a feel of the game.
Sarmiento on for McGree at the start of the second half. Time for him to make a name for himself!
Looks like the efl are going to have a decision to make then after all...
