No it’s not the same guy

OFB, I was also a volunteer DJ at South Cleveland Hospital. I was there for 3 years. First I was on Sunday requests then changed to Saturday mornings. I have been a part time DJ since 1968 and at the age of 75 still play now and again in my local pub!

As for football, a lot of supporters are asking the question why does CW keep playing Connoly. Is it because he is on loan and must be guaranteed games. Surely not!

I very much doubt it. I think Wilder just thinks he's the right option from what he has available. Personally I think Connolly is out of his depth. I reckon his initial debut two years ago was a fluke and he's not much more than around a league 1 journeyman. He's trying but he's just not good enough. He fits the mould of the pressing forward that Wilder likes but he's been found out.

What I hope now is that he scores a hat-trick against Millwall and goes on a hot streak to fire us into the playoffs.

CW has confirmed that Dijksteel will be available for the Millwall game but McGree will not be available until the Peterborough game, after the international break; that assumes he doesn’t get injured whilst on international duty! 😎

Thanks for that, OFB.

As to predictions for the match away to Millwall, I have given up so will not make one here. Other than to predict I will be in a relegation position at the end of the season, if that were possible in the ExMill Challenge. But, if we are to get the 0-0 predicted by OFB, Boro will need to perform much better all round than the showing at Sheffield.

As to points from what has been said already: OFB, does the "eyeballs in the sky" harken back to The Perishers cartoon in the Daily Mirror half a lifetime ago? Where the family would go every summer to a beachside holiday of the Blackpool/Scarborough/Weston-Super-Mare/ Rhyl type. And every year the old and wise Seer crab would tell the young crabs in the rockpool that there would be an appearance above them of the mystical eyeballs in the sky (which would come true when the young Perishers looked down into the pool from above).

I will not comment on recent events at the Teesside Crown Court save to say that I think the current matchday announcer/DJ is an improvement on the previous incumbent. But could I suggest a further improvement? Every game the announcer duly goes through the players named in Boro's starting XI and then names the players on the bench, as the players are getting ready for the kick off, but he never announces the names of the opposing team players or their substitutes' bench. I might not need to have OUR players named as I can usually recognise them but I rarely know the opposing team so well and I'd be even less likely to know which players they could bring on as substitutes. And it would be polite towards the opposition supporters who may have travelled several hours to get to the Riverside and, we hope, will depart empty-handed.  It would only take a minute or so.

“but he never announces the names of the opposing team players or their substitutes' bench.”

I wasn’t aware of that and am disappointed as I believe it is not good manners to not accord the same courtesy to our opponents on the day. 😎

I used to love it when I was young to have Marske Silver Band or Skelton Silver Band play for us before the match and at halftime. Once I recall we were entertained by the Coldstream Guards playing Sousa and Alford marches as they paraded up and down the pitch. I guess that was a sign of the times probably not appreciated by today’s supporters.

I’ve been talking to John and he has explained to me the timing regarding team announcements.

He is asking the club if he can pass this information onto the blog but his comments are more than reasonable.

He also mentioned that the full team for both sides is read out at 2:32 before they enter the field.

That sounds very fair and considerate as a host should be to me.  If spectators miss it due to arriving late then that is their responsibility and not the clubs.  😎

@Ken And I remember the half times at the FA Cup finals in the past, too. The band was a big part of the final.

The FA Cup final live on TV was a big thing in Finland in my youth, too. I still prefer the band over the expert summeriers that over-summerize the first half during the half time.

Traditions are great. I wish the FA Cup would get back its former glory.

I hope we get to the final, too. Up the Boro!

I agree with you about marching bands adding to the occasion of FA Cup Finals. Why do we need summaries from panellists discussing what one has already witnessed? When attending matches we don’t have so called experts reviewing the first half during the interval over the tannoy thank goodness, they would be irrelevant. Part of the tradition of FA Cup and Rugby League Challenge Cup Finals was the pre-match entertainment of marching bands in their red uniforms, the singing of “Abide with me” and importantly 3pm kickoffs.

I can’t remember which year the Coldstream Guards performed at Ayresome Park, but it was against Blackpool sometime in the 1950s, but I remember thinking at the time that this was like Wembley Stadium must have felt like on Cup Final day.

As well as local silver bands, children’s marching bands were in vogue with a majorette twiddling a baton leading the children in their colourful livery playing wind instruments and receiving tumultuous applause as they left the Ayresome Park stadium. Happy Days!

There’s an interesting history of Brian Clough’s playing career on the Northern Echo website, and the views of some of his colleagues. I’m looking forward to reading Tosh Warwick’s biography of George Camsell who discovered Cloughie.  Apparently Camsell was a quiet modest man, in contrast to Cloughie, but nevertheless they were the two greatest centre forwards that Boro have produced in their history.

I'm sure the club would be DELIGHTED if everyone left the concourses maybe at about 2.25pm and took their seats in the stands in good time to hear the team announcements at 2.32pm.  That would put more than a dent in the sales of food and drink at the concourse outlets (bearing in mind that alcohol must not be taken within sight of the pitch - who is going to leave a pint of beer unattended on a shelf in the concourse in the hope it may still be there when they return in 15 minutes?).

I must say, though, that I was unaware the full teams (ie including the away team) were read out half an hour before kick off, as well as the home team only at 3pm.

As someone said to me. 'he is a couple of inches too short, six pounds too heavy, his shoulders are always slumped and he always looks as though he would rather be anywhere but on that pitch at that particular moment. To be an ever present is at best puzzling.

Team News: With Dijksteel still missing, Lee Peltier rather worryingly continues in his place - at least Taylor returns for Bola who looked off the pace midweek. It's once again Balogun and Connolly who start with Watmore and Coburn on the bench - but no Sporar in the squad.

Sporar is supposedly ill.

Is there a COVID outbreak at Boro?

Thanks to OFB for his match preview and assessing the strengths and weaknesses of both side - all of which concluded that perhaps it has the look of a nil-nil. Hard to argue that this game is going to be a high-scoring one and most likely one goal would decide it. Like Chris Wilder and many others, I'll be looking for a reaction to the poor performance midweek.

While defeat is not terminal it would start to make the play-offs appear more of a long shot if other results go against us. This really is the day for Boro to put down a marker and re-announce themselves as promotion contenders.

Prediction: I'd like to say 1-0 to Boro but don't fancy a clean sheet given our recent away performances - Though any win will do today!

Sporar is not really a loss and is probably our fifth choice striker on recent performances!

Not convinced by the line up as there are questions around creativity and scoring.

That being said it looks as if CW has limited options. Could be a very difficult afternoon. 😎

Well having seen the team news, it is hard to see us getting any points out of this. Once more shows how thin the squad is.

Time this afternoon for Tav to produce a more creative display. Peltier has to be the weak link at the back. Let’s see how the other two CB’s perform.

Just seen their number 5, Cooper standing next toHowson. He must be 7 foot tall.

This Millwall side really fit their stereotype. A very basic side but physical and highly charged.

Boro look to have much more quality in my view and have matched Millwall’s determination so far but it’s tight and I fancy one goal will settle it.

Our front two have been lively but the partnership lacks teeth and we haven’t created a big opportunity yet.

A little more more class needed from midfield.

Well a better start than against the blades and probably just shaded the first half without scoring.

It is surprising that Millwall are letting us play out from the back and are not pressing as much as the blades.

Connolly probably having his best game so far but still inclined to fall over too easily for my liking. Back three have looked solid and comfortable.

No silly mistakes and we might just nick this one. CoB 😎
