Middlesbrough Football Club have terminated the contract of manager Chris Wilder with immediate effect

Well that has come out of the blue - I wonder what has been going on behind the scenes?

Either way it's probably buggered another of Andy's match previews!

former Watford boss Rob Edwards is a “strong contender” to succeed the 54-year-old, though he is just one of multiple candidates at this stage.

Why worry about the opposition. What use are draws at the moment. Blackburn have yet to draw a match this season and that’s why they are in the top six. In a league as tight as this, it’s not a question of a little bit of luck. Go for the jugular, look how many teams win away matches. Hoping to net an equaliser at Coventry is reactive when being proactive is what is required. To attack is the best form of defence, score the first goal then go for the second and then the third. A one goal win against Brum on Wednesday won’t mean that Boro have turned the corner, but a 3-0 or 4-1 win should send shivers to the rest of the division. Follow the Forest way, not sit back and worry about the opposition scoring first. Surely Boro should be better than that. How I hate draws!

I wrote these comments before learning of Wilder’s dismissal, so perhaps Wilder has got his wish after all and will be due a hefty pay off.

Good to see our intrepid reporter Clive was on the ball, picked it up within minutes of club statement.  EG and BBC still not caught up.

Is it me slowing down or are these sackings getting quicker😉😎

I guess it may have arisen from the Monday morning pre-training conversation between Gibson and Wilder - doesn't sound like it was planned as none of the local press have even had a sniff of the story. So another manager bites the dust after another short stint - let's see who's next... Sean Dyche is still unemployed 😏

I would definitely consider Rob Edwards, as a young, forward-thinking manager. He did a fabulous job at Forest Green and was unlucky to be given the poisoned chalice at Watford.

Dyche would surely bring stability, but I really don’t want to go back to the industrial football of the Pulis era, which I fear is Dyche’s default style.

@werdermouth. Dyche came to my mind and then I remembered how he treated Ben Gibson so he is out of the frame.

I can’t think of anyone who would set my pulse racing.

I am just so down as it’s another case of here we go again and I have been struggling with Man flu since we got back from YUK.  Mrs P has just got a cold! 😉😎

My grandson has just suggested Scott Parker.

Not a guy I warm to - he’s a bit too Sathern, a bit too Cockney - but he did a sound job at Bournemouth.

Definitely not Bruce, he will have to be out of work, Farke?

@clive-hurren.  I’m with you, not convinced by Parker. That being said he did get both Fulham and Bournemouth promoted.

Not sure what we need, we have tried youth we have tried experienced but neither have worked since AK. Perhaps we need someone from abroad but has knowledge of the league.  Pity we missed out on Bilic. 😎

I was thinking something had to happen and would Mr Gibson respond. Well he has, despite the cost and upheaval to follow.

Please not one of the old brigade, such Dyche, Bruce et al. Do not know enough about Edwards, but then all appointments come with no guarantees.

One question to be answered though is the Recruitment Team and its part in all this. Surely they should get a kicking if nothing else.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a younger manager appointed to work under the new structure where Keiron Scott is DoF. I wonder if former Boro captain Gary O'Neil has caught Gibson's eye if Bournemouth appoint a more experienced manager once the takeover goes through.

Whoever they choose, I hope it needs to be someone who can work with the existing players and get the best out of them - it's a long way to the January window and the season needs to be rescued long before that.

We are sacking managers so quickly that we must be paying more in compensation than salary when they are in position. However it had got to the stage with Wilder, looking at the results at the end of last season and start of this one, that it was more a question of whether he could succeed in a relegation battle rather than getting us promoted. Perhaps Wilder will now say how many of the new players were his choices.

Leo now has the poisoned chalice if only for a short time! Best of luck.

After the end of the Coventry game Gibson would have made his decision then to sack Wilder.Probably spent the weekend on the phone sounding out managers.

Rob Edwards appears to be the bookies odds on favourite at 4-5 - strange given he was only sacked last week by Watford after only 11 games in charge with the following statement...

"As with all decisions taken by the board, I believe this change to be in the best interests of the club. We felt Rob had enough time to show us the identity of his team, however performances haven’t reflected our hopes and ambitions."

However, being sacked by Watford is not necessarily unusual as they can go through several managers in a season. He led Forest Green to promotion to League One last season and was named League Two manager of the season.

He's a young manager at 39 and may well fit the profile of what Steve Gibson is looking for in the long term - as a bonus, he also shares a birthday with a famous miracle worker who is celebrated on 25 December...

Rob Edwards mentioned in a few newspapers.  But I haven't heard of him. Anyone enlighten me on his past football career.

@malcolm

Malcom - covered him a bit in the preview of the Watford game....

"Edwards was somewhat of a left-field choice at Watford’s revolving managerial door. The 39-year-old former centre-half retired from playing aged just 30 and took a position as Wolves U18s coach a year later. After short stints with Telford and England U20s, he was appointed manager of Forest Green Rovers last year and guided them to promotion, winning the EFL League Two Manager of the Season in the process, before immediately replacing Roy Hodgson at Watford.

"Edwards hasn’t completely settled on a formation as yet, largely playing a 4-2-3-1 but mixing things up with a back three at times and it’s fair to suggest that he hasn’t found the right balance with his team now heading into Tuesday’s clash without a win in three. With the Pozzo family in charge and their record for impatience with managers, Edwards can genuinely be worried about his position if Boro take the points!"

Turns out he should have been worried whatever the result.
