Our manager has been quoted in the press that he has to manage the fitness of Duncan Watmore who has a recurring injury which prevents him playing a full game. It should be noted that DW only managed to play one full game last season and was substituted or came on as a sub for nearly all the games.

It is of course no secret to Diasborians that DW has a problem and to be fair it is to the credit of the Boro fitness team that they have managed to patch him up to play so much football for us as he was on the sidelines for much of his Blackcats career.

Apparently Boro would release him but only if they can source suitable strikers to enhance the numbers in the squad.

I must admit I like Watmore but I think even at my age I would have scored from that excellent cross on Saturday!

Just saying, that Sunderland had 15,000 more supporters than Boro on Saturday.

To be honest, I like Sunderland far better than Newcastle.

Anyway looking forward to our derby with the Makems. Should be a cracker and hopefully we will have some new strikers by then. 😉

No, you are mistaken Malcolm.

We had 28000 more than Sunderland on Saturday.

They had 43000 more than us on Sunday 😉

A few observations about the first round of Championship matches last weekend is the paucity of the number of goals with only 16 in the 12 matches, five 1-0 wins, only one away win, five drawn matches, only one match recording more than 2 goals and that required a goal in added time, and only one match finishing with more than a one goal advantage. It appears to me that this season could well be the tightest yet since the end of the 1927/28 First Divison season when only 5 points separated Derby County in 4th place to Portsmouth in 20th. Or put it another way maybe any of 17 clubs could reach the playoffs or become involved in a relegation battle.

Another intriguing situation is next week’s League encounter between Charlton Athletic and Derby County which was the first FA Cup Final in 1947 which I remember listening to on the radio, notably because the ball burst. How the mighty have fallen, though it was 75 years ago! How do I remember that when I can’t remember sometimes whether I’ve taken my medication or not?

Just a fitting and emotional day for Harry Gration, the much loved and proud Yorkshireman who died suddenly recently. Not many Teessiders will have heard of the 71 year old as he hosted Yorkshire TV’s version of Calendar and Look North, the equivalent of BBC’s North east version of Look North which the late Mike Neville hosted for many years.

However although I could never receive Yorkshire TV from the Holme Moss transmitter once Pontop Pike was installed for North East viewers, I was aware of Harry who often reported on Sunday’s Radio Leeds Rugby League programme which I was able to obtain on my car radio but now regularly listen to on the internet. Harry occasionally reported on football as well on BBC’s Final Score programme.

My wife was a regular reader of Yorkshire Life and Harry’s photograph regularly appeared at various functions within the broad acres. I suppose he was as popular in Yorkshire as Jeff Stelling is on Teesside especially for his charity work. It was therefore fitting that his funeral was held on Monday which of course was Yorkshire Day when I always wore a white rose in the lapel of my jacket when working in Local Government. It was also apt that Harry’s funeral should be held at York Minster with an emotional eulogy from his co-presenter of Look North Christine Talbot.

My heartfelt condolences to his wife Helen and his 6 children, and may Harry forever rest in peace.
