There’s rumours that Boro may be looking for a central defender cos of injuries in that position.  This could be building up a problem when all  4 central defenders are fit. Which is the best pairing between Fry, Lenihan, Van de etc and Clarke ?
In my view, central defence is where you play the same 2 players week in , week out unlike eg midfield or strikers where regular substitutes are made weekly and during a game.

Surely for the time being Boro have enough options with Ayling and Dijksteel and Howson( not far off retuning?). Fry and Lenihan are puzzling with the length of time they have been unfit.

Also rumours that Preston have joined the list of clubs interested in signing Coburn. I think he’d be well advised looking for a permanent move. If he went on loan again there’s the probibility that he’d return as only third choice striker and so he would have wasted a year of his career.

I would like to see a change in the way Boro play out from the back. The team are poor at defending plus not good in this modern way of playing. So , be pragmatic and ditch it until defending improves.

Next game at Cardiff and a defeat will evaporate the good feeling before the season started. So what will be Carrick’s tactics ? Regrettably more of the same I fear.

@forever-dormo.  To further emphasis your point here are the stats from the Leeds game:

Leeds. 59%.              Possession    Boro.  42%

12.                            Shots.                     17

2.                              Shots On Target.        7
4.                                Corners.                   3
14.                               Fouls.                    11

Play in the manner that we did at Leeds, being well organised, disciplined, defend as a unit when not in possession and then move the ball quickly and accurately when in transition will give us the chance of all three points; play as we have been in our league games and who knows what the outcome will be. 😎

If only the opposition would park all ten outfield players in our half like Leeds did at 1-0 down and thereafter!

PS, if we go to Cardiff with our full side and get a win, the Caraboa Cup will be forgotten about.

Come on BORO.

And if we lose at Cardiff what then? 😎

I prefer to think positively.

Come on BORO.

I think your Possession is a False God statement is very interesting. I guess it's for other forums than this to explore whether pursuing false gods just wastes your time or is positively damaging.

I did, though, start to wonder on Tuesday whether the possession obsession was actually what was actually causing the problem. I can imagine long training sessions where the players work on keeping the ball at all costs and you could see that everyone in the team is very good at it. To my uneducated eye, it's as much about every player not in possession making sure that the one with the ball has plenty of options, as it is about the skill in making the pass. The simpler the pass, the more likely that possession will be retained. Too many times, though, on Tuesday once they arrived at the top end of the pitch, the need find a teammate with a neat pass, seemed to override all other priorities.

But we know that, to score goals, different rules apply. You need shock and awe, energy, surprise, originality, oomph, fearlessness....

I've heard MC say many times that he won't criticise his players for having a go, trying something different, and I'm sure that they all buy into that, but maybe the sheer grinding effort of keeping possession, makes it more difficult to shake that attitude off at the sharp end.

I've no idea how you fix that. Just giving the ball to the opposition, feels a bit counter-intuitive. But the stats do make bewildering reading.

With Michael Carrick not yet able to put a timeframe on a return for injured duo Dael Fry and Darragh Lenihan and Rav van den Berg.

Are we still saying, we don't need another CB. Even on loan until January?

Just wondering who was down for the Cardiff preview and noticed it was Deleriad but his last post on Diasboro was 17 June so he may not be aware he's been lined up for it - I can't step in to help as will be finishing a project all day tomorrow so unless anyone has heard from Deleriad then we may need a contingency plan.

@philip-of-huddersfield

it seems Lenihan has got tendonitis  in his achilles, which coincidentally is what I've been suffering with for nearly 5 weeks now and tried going for an hour walk on Tuesday after it was more or less pain free but ended up making it worse and have probably set back the recovery several weeks. I'm now under instructions to take it easy as we've got a 4-day trip to Berlin in October that is fast looming on the horizon - there's absolutely no way I can imagine running any time soon so I suspect Lenihan may well be out for another couple of months. OK, he's a bit younger than me but tendons are still slow to heal.
