If Boro arrange to loan him back and contribute to a portion of his wages (or knock something off the payment plan) then Burnley save some money. Their depreciating Player then gets to play and put himself back in the shop window. If he comes here and tears the Championship apart Clubs will be fighting over his signature and Burnley can sell him more easily, recouping something out of the car crash and move on.
@werdermouth Yes you are so correct. We are dealing here with Mr Gibson and his nephew.
If SG wants Ben and Ben wants to come back, he can make it happen. It’s family and what goes on behind closed doors can stay there. A deal could done with Burnley I am sure. Bens wages could be then be sorted behind closed doors.
It may just depend on how much Mr Gibson can inject into MFC and comply with FFP and how much of Bulkhaul money he wants to gamble.
Still I have made my position clear previously. I would not have him back gift wrapped.
If Ben does return, either permanent or on loan, I would be very surprised if the financial structure of the deal were made public.
Why Ben Gibson ?
Isnt he the epitome of typical Boro, almost there , promises not kept, highs and lows , local hero.
For what?
Sean Dyche twigged him, and wants him bombed out, a club like Burnley can't afford mistakes but if they do your gone .
I wouldn't sign him , we need strong professional characters that ,say less and do more that sustain it over years,
So two points in place already:
- Neil Warnock appointed as a manager
- Transfer window opened (a few signings made by our competitors now)
I must add a few things to look forward to:
- Players returning to training (in two to three weeks time)
- Friendly matches and the shape of the new team
Getting exciting already. Up the Boro!
Does anyone know the exact truth as to what happened between Ben Gibson, Burnley in general and Ian Woan in particular?

@selwynoz All kept pretty quiet: https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.fourfourtwo.com/amp/news/sean-dyche-will-not-divulge-details-behind-unique-ben-gibson-situation
Just sounds like frustration at not playing and the situation coming to a head.
On the whole I'm happy with the NW appointment - makes sense and will no doubt help during this 'steadying the ship' period, however I would argue for it to work best if Boro appointed a right-hand man to work alongside him and take over when he's ready to step down, whether that's *gulp* Woodgate or someone else. But yes, it sounds like the right move for me, bags of experience and he has a track record of turning the fortunes of his teams around. I've had a lot of negative feelings about him over the years, stemming all the way back to the 1991 playoffs, so perhaps it's time to see some of the good things...
I think that this is the key point. It makes no sense to have a good year with NW and his team and then have to start again with a new management team. There has to be a 3-4 year plan even if NW only serves as full-time manager for, say, eighteen months.
Just wanted to make my position clear on the BG situation; whilst I have made a case for how it could work, I am not in favour in fact I am very anti old boys returning, as in my view it very rarely works.
By that I mean they add limited value to the team and are often a shadow of their previous incarnation. For example, Woodgate, TLF, Parnaby and Downing.
Regrettably, given the impasse between BG and Burnley and all the parties involved, then I see this as a distinct possibility. 😎
How much will NE have to spend is tied up with FFP.
However with no gate income until October (?) will the FA suspended the rules and allow owners to pump more money into their club on the pretext of preventing the club going bankrupt?
And so how many owners will consider this an opportunity to steal a financial march on the opposition in terms of buying players in a promotion bid?

I tend to agree. You do occasionally get some cases. For example Marcus Browne seems to have found a club that suits him in Oxford. You also get the impression that McClaren didn't want TLF back and AK didn't want Downing back so there is that to factor in. If Warnock actually wanted BG and there was a season long loan deal on offer where we paid, say, 1/3 of his wages then that is potentially a positive.
However, the BG saga is more likely to detract from us trying to rebuild the team so I would leave it alone unless he was basically handed to us on a plate.

Looks like Neil has taken charge of the new Shirt as well 🙂

Werder is right. With knobs on.
This is a buyer's market in which most clubs are in our position of trying to off-load overpaid misfits, recouping some of the over-inflated transfer fees that they paid for them, and selling off their most promising youngsters
A market where no one has much money, many EFL clubs will be struggling to stay solvent, and in which the future looks even bleaker than the covid-stricken present.
Once hopes of a V-shaped recovery collapse, unemployment spikes and discretionary spending withers away, the days of 20,000 crowds at the Riverside may become a thing of the past.
If cash is king now, it will be even more so in 12 months time. As ever it will be people who already have money who will be the beneficiaries as they scoop up the bargains and sell at a handsome profit as the market begins to revive, whether in housing , the stock market or football.
On this analysis the prospect of our recouping any decent money from the likes of Britt, McNair, Saville and others is probably illusory. They are all likely to sit out their contracts since they won't get better ones any time soon. As with Woodgate. We are paying him handsomely anyway so we may as well keep him.
One of the undoubted benefits of keeping Warnock on is that he and his team know the lower divisions well, know what they are looking for and will be in a position to pick up some bargain buys. But they may be frustrated to find that they have much less cash to splash than they or the club at first envisaged. And what look like bargains now may look anything but in 12 months time.
The next few weeks are likely to be interesting, but frustrating ones for Warnock and the fans alike. We may have to make do very largely with what we already have.
Its long been a pet hate of mine that football clubs continue to be shrouded in clouds of secrecy. Often highlighted by this ridiculous sense of Omerta where what happens on the training ground or in the dressing room stays there. Why shouldn’t the average fan know what’s going at at their clubs, after all ultimately they are the ones that fund it.
Tick, the new kit introduced. And in memory of Big Jack, the with band is back.
Of course the desision was made about 12 months ago to celebrate the 25 years of Riverside. But we can also think the band is there because of Big Jack.
Well, it's been a good close season so far. We do not need more news this week but I expect a few player announsements next week.
A winger and a centre back. Even it is just Johnson and Friend. Up the Boro!
Sky news reporting that Boro and QPR have lodged bids of just under £500k for Northampton central defender and Captain Charlie Goode. Age 24 and 6' 4".
It is reported the bids are short of the valuation placed on him by Northampton.
Goode was born in Watford so QPR may be more attractive to him but we await developments. 😎
With regard to the Boro management for the present and future, why should we not adopt the old Liverpool way and recruit from within, Neil Warnock followed by Kevin Blackwell (61) then Ronnie Jepson (57) then so on with who ever joins the coaching team and learns under them (Friend ?) just an idea.
As reported by the Gazette earlier today, Burnley still owe in the region of £7.5m for Ben Gibson and I follow werdermouth reasoning that is a lot off our transfer budget to write off but it is only 50% this season (£3.75m) as they have two years left to pay, not including two years wages. How much would we pay for a good championship CB. I, like others, am not sure bringing him back would be a good thing but I am just suggesting a way it might happen.
With regards to his wages, I may be wrong, but did I not read that Derby County sponsors are paying Wayne Rooney’s wages.
Come on BORO.
@grovehillwallah The first rule of Fight Club...............
@exmil if I understand it correctly the Rooney thing and his wages is not permissible for a player but it is if he is a Coach which of course Rooney is (coughs quietly). Maybe we could bring Ben Gibson back in a Coaching capacity, nudge, nudge, wink, wink!

I agree it would be best to leave the BG situation well alone. I have posted before on my feeling about the negative impact of the tendency to put family before rational business decision making and for that reason alone I wouldn’t want BG (or JW) anywhere near the club. Add to that the financial considerations, the lack of competitive football played by BG in recent years, the mystery of the falling out with Burnley and his lacklustre performances in his last season at Boro and any argument for bringing him back becomes untenable. Besides, I don’t think he is a central defender in the Warnock mould and so it is very unlikely that he will be on his shopping list.
Although I am not in favour of old boys returning, Bamford would be a better investment and a lot cheaper. ( still on championship money). He has no roots in the area and no blood in the dynasty, but the way he was treated by Pulis, he may have a point to prove. It would be great to see him given number 9 and told that the shirt is his to lose. If or course he is deemed surplus to requirements at Leeds.

CLUBS LODGE GOODE BIDS
QPR and Middlesbrough have placed bids of just under £500,000 for Northampton Town captain Charlie Goode
Come on BORO.
The story of Gibson gets more bizzare by the minute. The transfer market works like this. You have a Young player who is playing well (even on the fringes of the national side). The bottom fishers come sniffing, you get yourself into money troubles, natch, they jump in with a low offer, and you are left to whistle as he is sold on for a giant profit.
Sometimes, it all goes bottom up, they drop him, it goes from bad to worse, they try setting up their lip at him, the Good news is that he is getting rich, keep that in mind. Ben holds all the cards, they are in deep trouble, it may be only 15 mill, but they expected to be twenty Mill in profit by now with their next project on his way to market.
Ben must be street wise, tell them they he will go on loan (to a Prem side,) keep collecting his money (it may be his only big contract?) and look forward to a free in due course ( more money for him). We should keep out of this affair, they have the problem, not us. The dreadful manager is playing the family card, tell him where to go. No one helps us when we commit monumental blunders. Every one will have a good laugh when Traore goes for some colossal fee to a giant club.
It’s all very cosy with the press at MFC right now. If you were able to ask three questions of the hierarchy, which person would you choose and what would your questions be?
Here’s mine.....
SG: Why are you so intent on keeping JW at the club?
NW: Are you here, long or short term?
NB: Who has the last say on signing players, the manager or the chairman?
