Well, another exciting yellow ticker-tape deadline day goes by. Tumbleweed rolling by. Boro tried to sign Bolasie - again! - having failed the first time a few windows back. Not quite sure of the logic behind that one, but it does seem to say NW has limited confidence in Marcus Browne.

I agree, Jarkko. I thought we needed defenders. The lack of signings today leaves us very short at centre-back and full-back. NW says he will go now for players without a club. Two spring to mind - Danny Welbeck (surprisingly), and a certain Dani Ayala. I don’t think our Dani is fixed up with anyone, is he? Or perhaps someone knows differently? Would he come back on much reduced wages? And would you have him back, playmates? I certainly would.

Incidentally, has anyone heard what has become of Adam Clayton or Gestede? Not that I want either of them back, you understand, I’m just curious.

@clive-hurren

Ayala is at Blackburn whilst Clayton joined Karanka and Friend at Birmingham.

I haven’t heard anything about Shotton or Gestede, whilst Downing is also a free agent I believe.

Here’s a tantalising clue to which of the six strikers NW is hoping to sign.....

Thanks Andy. I’d forgotten about Clayton joining Karanka. I had no idea Ayala had gone to Blackburn - missed that one somehow. Looks like Mogga is again trying to build Rovers from former Boro stalwarts!

Perhaps we could bring Gestede back if we need a back-up striker next. He know how to be a bCk up and not to play.

Just joking, me. I hope Redcar Red is OK after reading the above. Up the Boro!

I fail to see the point of any transfer windows at all especially in the current climate. On another point I see that the County Cricket clubs have revolutionised the fixtures for next season in case the coronavirus virus continues into the summer of next year without any apparent dissent amongst the 18 counties. Perhaps the Premier League and EFL should forget this current season as the odds shorten as to whether any of the Leagues below the Premier League will actually finish. A fine gesture would be to reduce the season to a maximum of 36 matches for all clubs on a regional basis of friendly matches of 4 divisions instead of League matches. If for example Leyton Orient, AFC Wimbledon, Luton, Reading, etc were playing in the same division as Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs, etc or that Rochdale, Accrington, Crewe, Blackpool, etc were competing against Liverpool, Everton, and the two Manchester clubs it might help stave off a number of smaller clubs folding. Ridiculous and preposterous? Absolutely! But maybe for one season only. Something similar happened during the Second World War when survival was paramount. Of course it wouldn’t work today when self interest seems to be paramount, but what a boost for the smaller clubs if regional Leagues were introduced. There might be some heavy defeats on the way, but the top clubs could utilise all their massive playing staffs instead of sending them out on loan. Maybe there could even be a handicap system where smaller clubs were given 2 or 3 goals start, anything to make matches more interesting. If race horses are handicapped, why not football clubs?

A bit of humour is what I need right now, so don’t take my suggestions too seriously, but some revolutionary ideas need to be considered to save football as the whole game has become stale with the same clubs challenging for the League title every season with the height of ambition for many clubs to reach the Premier League and either finish in the top 6 or above 18th. The beautiful game? Maybe once, but not any more in my opinion. One of the joys of football past was the mighty Juventus inviting a top English club to a mini World Cup and assuming that WAFC meant Woolwich Arsenal FC only to find that WAFC stood for West Auckland FC, and still got a bloody nose. A few more results like that would be a start.
