While I'm at it, I thought I'd add this thread as a place for discussion about Boro and football in general as sometimes it's not easy to decide where to post - usually either the previous match thread or the Speculation on Appointments and Players gets used (which is now well over 30 pages since its pre-season creation.

I've moved a few posts from both threads to avoid overlapping discussions but some I left where they were as followed on from previous posts.

@selwynoz

I think the pundit summarised our team and its performances quite nicely and correctly in there 😇.

Up the Boro!

Warnock has been nominated for the Championship Manager of the Month award and accrued more points in October than any of other nominees.

No Boro players nominated for Player of the Month.

Good link Selwyn.

Interesting to read the views of a pundit that indicates that he has actually watched games and more importantly understands the nuances of the game. Andy Hinchcliffe has gone up massively in my esteem!

Well! It was very pleasant whilst it lasted, but I'm very much afraid that ends our dreams for this season. Many things can be overcome by endeavor, but the curse has beaten better clubs than us. We must look forward to the inevitable slide down the league with calm resignation as becomes any victim of forces higher than we can comprehend.

In August 2005 Neil Warnock was the manager of Sheffield United and won the gong.

In September 2005, the Blades won five in five and Warnock became the first manager to be named Manager of the Month in the Championship in successive months.

So we should not be worried with the first trophy 🙂

Up the Boro!

I wonder how things might have gone if NW was appointed Director of Football when JW was given the job as manager?

An interesting thought but over his career I doubt if Woodgate ever showed the nous to become a Manager in the first place.

I am sure that he would have looked a lot better than he did had Warnock been upstairs pulling the strings. The problem though would have been that to the Players it would have quickly become obvious who knew what they were doing and who didn't. It has become very clear that NW's man management skills and motivational techniques are as important as his knowledge in how to set his team up.

It may be that Woodgate has an eye for a young player and scouting is where he will make his mark in the future but I think management is well beyond him. If that is his preferred career option then he needs to start at a lower profile club and build his reputation.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, to me this one speaks volumes

You make a very good point. It’s hard to imagine NW not being the dominant force at any club. It could have worked with, say, JW as part of the team under NW perhaps with responsibility for the U23s. It says something about NW’s impact that it’s now a little hard to imagine anyone else as manager.

I can’t work out whether I want McNair to come straight home because he might have a problem or to stay with NI because he’s not badly injured

 Come on BORO.

Cocu's gone from Derby, too, with "captain Wayne Rooney and coaches SHAY GIVEN, Liam Rosenior and Justin Walker oversee[ing[ first-team training before a permanent successor is appointed", according to the Beeb (my block caps).

Sounds very much like a another "Golden Thread" moment to me if they are not careful and we all know how that turns out!

I wonder if maybe someone's ego destabilised things and upset the apple cart when he arrived.

And yet Derby County Under 23s head the Premier League Group 1 for Under 23 clubs ahead of Liverpool, Chelsea and Spurs although those 3 clubs have loaned out the most players. Meanwhile Boro head Group 2 and hoping for promotion to Group 1. For those interested in Under 23 standings look at Flash Scores/Football/England/Premier League 2/standings. For the Under 18s it’s Flash Scores/Football/England/Premier League U18/standings. All the current Premier League clubs with the exception of Sheffield United participate  in these competitions plus Blackburn, Derby, Middlesbrough, Norwich, Reading, Stoke and Sunderland.

For those unaware of the Flash Scores website, it covers all major sports throughout Europe and the rest of the World giving updated scores as they happen, and in football particularly covers scores and league tables down to level 3 in the English pyramid system, also producing league tables for the last 10 seasons. I sometimes use it for golf as birdies, pars and bogeys flash up against players as and when they happen, and their positions are automatically updated.

Good Business ( although the cynical may think its to maximise any transfer fee in January)

It makes a change from a wise old Manager flogging the family silver.

If he stays with the Club its a great deal after the way he has been performing and if a bigger fish does come sniffing then it adds a few noughts to the price. Nice to see the Managers experience bearing fruit elsewhere within the Club and not just on the pitch on a Saturday afternoon.

He must have either laughed or cried when he discussed our buying tactics after arriving. Spot a name in the paper, ring the press and inform them who we wanted and what we were prepared to pay, oh, and what salary we were offering, plus length of contract.

Interestingly Browne has not played much this season. He came on and scored while NW was away in isolation.

He had two very successful loan periods at Oxford and I thought he could be more potential than Bola this season.

And now we signed Watmore. So the competion is there on the right side of the final third.

Up the Boro!

Looking forward to seeing how Watmore performs. The short term contract represents a low risk and probably reflects the current financial reality plus the “Warnock factor”.
Also surprised that nobody has commented on the great Mido’s opinion of Gareth Southgate. Perhaps, a bit more dedication and professionalism on his part during his spell at Boro would have helped.

I suppose that it reflects the sheer volume of matches plus frequency, it Highlights the value of using two useful players in the same position by switching them at half time in every match. I always thought that Gareth could have maybe won at least one of the big international competitions, had he declared that he had two strikers, and switched them at half time in each match, it would have been a real test for the Defence to face Vardy/Kane or vice versa in every match, and would have kept them both fit for the duration of the Tournement.

Paddy McNair played just about every minute of the three successive international games for Northern Ireland.

Teemu Pukki played only two matches for Finland in the same period. He was rested in the away win against France.

I was hoping it would have been the other way around - that Pukki would have played more than McNair. And that Pukki would not play for Norwich at Riverside on Saturday. Now I think it will be a miracle if McNair will start on Saturday.

When did they start playing three Internationals during the eight day slot for International break? I know Internationals are needed but why play three matches in such a short time is beyond me.

Up the Boro!

Disappointed that NI manager played McNair in the last match as it was a dead rubber, they were already relegated well before kick off. He has done himself no favours with NW and missed the opportunity to assess the back up player for McNair.

Come on BORO.

Regarding the McNair situation, I think the N. Ireland Manager was desperate for a win after a very poor start to his International Managerial career, no wins in ten games or something like that. Paddy must have been keen to play himself as quite a few Players dropped out of the Irish squad before the game so fair play to the lad for being an honest Pro. Tactically Paddy knows what Warnock requires and if he doesn't train so that his body can get some rest between now and Saturday he should be good to go again although far from ideal.

There are far too many Internationals for my liking and considering the current Pandemic the Nations League (whatever it is) should have been scrapped. It is no more than a Mickey Mouse trophy with zero heritage. I watched the N. Ireland game because of the Boro connection with McNair. Being honest I couldn't have told you what were qualifiers, play offs or knock outs for which tournament and what were Nations League games over the past fortnight such is my disinterest.

Of secondary interest was the performance of a young lad called Daniel Ballard for N. Ireland. I believe he is an Arsenal Player who gets loaned out but is now coming to an age (21) where he breaks through at the Emirates or he goes elsewhere. He is currently on loan at Blackpool, which tells me that perhaps they don't rate him that highly.

From what I saw I think there is a really good Defender in there and according to Transfermarkt his contract expires in January. We could do with a bit of CB cover and McNair and Saville probably know plenty about him to feed in to our scouting network.

Both the stadiums and the Football authorities need the money, even worse they have the entire football World playing twice a week for ever. So it ain't going to stop. We failed to qualify for a major competition because the giants withdrew various stars. The match was sold to the pay per view barons, so, at least most people did not get to see it. At least the Good Young players got a game. But what a mess!
