If Boro want a left back, look no further that Jamie Robson age 23 from Dundee Utd. Had a magnificient game today against Glasgow Rangers. Mark my words he is going far.

And even scored the goal that won it for The Tangerines, I understand.  😉

If, in October, the government introduce the rule that you have to be double vaccinated to enter football grounds to watch Premiership and EFL games, does that mean unvaccinated players won’t be allowed in too. 🤔

Come on BORO.

It is ludicrous that the club has not absolutely insisted that everyone associated with it has to be vaccinated, given the implications of an outbreak for the financial and playing future of the entire club. These are not matters that can be left to individual whim, in spite of this being official government policy. ("Do as you please" spun as "taking individual responsibility").

On another matter, I found the little video of Payero's first day in training immeasurably sad. After an opening fetishisation of the lad's shirt and boots, we were mainly treated to shots of him working on his own, punctuated by some fist bumps with other passing team mates.  It was clear that Payero spoke no English, and, it goes without saying, that no one made any attempt to communicate with him, let alone risk the attempt at even a few words of Spanish.

Then came the "training".  Imagine going to a foreign country and on your first day at work you are faced with a one-on-one with Kevin Blackwell.  Gloomy at the best of times, and fluent only in four-letter words in his own language, he is not someone, who, in PG Wodehouse's words, you would ever confuse with a ray of sunshine. There appeared to be no communication between them at all as the Argentine did a few little turns and sprints.

Then came the high comedy of a Gazette article dealing with the Payero language problem. I was reminded of the occasion when Ken Swales, then Manchester City chairman, went over to a German club to carry out negotiations over a player. "It was hard", he said, "because they didn't speak very good English".

First of all, in spite of all of the "intensive research" done on the player it was far from clear that anyone had actually seen him play, or that the club knew or had made any preparations for the fact that he spoke no English. I learned more from Selwynoz's analysis of his strengths and possible weaknesses on this blog than I have from anything emanating from either the club or the Gazette.

Given the importance of such an expensively acquired and valuable asset to the club settling quickly and happily, it was astonishing that Leo, who has been something of a spare part since Warnock's arrival at the club and could here have actually been of some use, was still away on his Summer break.

There was, of course, no question that anyone else in the club- Warnock, Blacky or Jepson, for example- might be even remotely bothered to acquire a few phrases of Spanish, to help them do their jobs more effectively and ease the path of a player who could be vital to the success of the club this season. No, it is going to be entirely down to the player to spend the year learning the language. As far as the club is concerned, he's on his own.

And so he is, quite literally. I saw nothing to allay my fear that a young man, far away from home, will be spending many long hours sitting in a room somewhere, or on a coach, by himself, effectively isolated and completely incommunicado.

Immeasurably sad, and the poorest of all possible starts.

In what has seemingly been a long-running saga, Ipswich Town look to be finally sealing a deal to bring Hayden Coulson to Portman Road.

According to latest news the 23 year-old is at the club this afternoon to finalise a season-long loan move from Middlesbrough after he was not given a squad number ahead of the new season at the Teessiders.

Paul Cook has been interested in bringing the versatile left-sided player to Suffolk since July but the deal has failed to get over the line because of Middlesbrough’s own struggles at left-back.

However Marc Bola is now fit again after injury, and because of that it seems as though Neil Warnock has allowed Ipswich to complete a deal for Coulson.

So Sol Bamba is officially a Boro player now. Just needing an international clearance anymore.

Sol joined Pa(le)rmo after the 2014 World Cup, but moved to Leeds United on loan six months after signing for the Italian side.

So he knows his Parmos already. Up the Boro!

Latest news from Brazil: Fulham's Rodrigo Muniz transfer blow emerges.

Fulham are set to miss out on the signing of Rodrigo Muniz, with the forward closing in on a move to Championship rivals Middlesbrough, according to journalist Gianluca Di Marzio.

Let's see what happens next. Perhaps Payero deal means something. This transfer seems to drag on. Up the Boro!

In balance, rather than fairness, he seems to have a reasonable record in Serie B and whilst in Serie A seems to have been a sub mainly with limited "last few" minutes on the pitch which probably in part explains his poor goals to games ratio at that level. Also playing for a weak team at that level never helps as we know only too well when even Negredo struggled.

He is probably an Italian equivalent of Britt in that he can score at Championship level but nobody fancies him at Premiership level. Besides he would be coming to a Club that is the proverbial Striker's graveyard so even if he had scored 50 goals in 40 games in Serie A you can guarantee he couldn't hit a cow's derriere with a banjo as soon as he puts the red shirt on.

Championship outfit Middlesbrough are set to win the race for highly-rated non-league winger Toyosi Olusanya, we can reveal.

The 23-year-old winger is currently on a semi-professional deal with Billericay Town of National League South. He began his career with AFC Wimbledon and during that time he attracted a great deal of interest from the likes of Manchester City and Newcastle United. He was even handed a trial by Chelsea in 2017.

Now that is more interesting than the Muniz pantomime and we kept it quiet. If he does sign I shall follow this with interest. Still think it's a 0 - 0 tomorrow and that probably guarantees a 3 - 3 draw.

So the squad is taking shape with news of a low scoring forward, 8 goals in 84 appearances, at a lower level than the Championship and a young winger from Billericay-  how many divisions lower is this compared to the Championship?

Sounds a lot and so we can’t expect him to take the Championship by storm. In fact, he may be one for the future when we need players who are good enough to go straight into the team.

These are in no way signings to get Boro supporters excited .

Hardly made any progress since having a TRIAL with Chelsea 4 years ago and not even a full professional   - only a semi pro with a National League South team.
So can we even expect him to be any better than the young wingers currently at the Club ?

Where did Lewis Wing come from? Some posters have said we should be looking for players in the lower leagues with a view to selling on later. maybe he'll come good maybe he won't but at least it's not millions and the fee will help a team further down the pyramid.

there are no guarantees but you just don't know. Every time I'm tempted to think why(?) I try to think about astute buys like Alves, Dong Gook Lee and not forgetting the 'G' word. Is it worse? I also think about Monk and the Jockification. Monk is one reason the club is having to think like this I reckon.

Sounds to me that the recruiting team and Bausor have failed badly, hence the appointment of the guy from Norwich.

I know that Strachan also failed badly apart from Barry Robson. It does seem that Middlesbrough have decided not to look at any Scottish

players but there is plenty of young talent up there at the moment.

This is a list of current Scottish players in the Premier league and Championship. Apart from David Moyes!

It still seems to be the case that Warnock's tactics, the shape and players available simply don't fit together.

Warnock plays a low defensive line so that the opponents have to commit forwards in numbers then hits on the counter with pace and width. We don't have pace and width.

Our central defenders play best in a three except we have no one who is natural on the left of a three. Our wide defenders play best in a 4 as full backs.

Our only uninjured attacking wide player with pace is Jones who has never started a game at this level.

Our best forwards (Watmore, Crooks, Tav) are all really best as a #10 though Tav can do a job out wide on the right if he is able to play a similar role to Harry Wilson and cut in on his left foot.

We have 3 first team regular midfielders (Morsy, Howson, McNair) who can all play defensive midfield but when they play together the team just grinds to a halt.

All in all we do have a set of decent 1st team players but no way to put them together that doesn't leave gaping holes. I don't really see an answer without more recruitment. Personally, factoring in long term injuries and players leaving, it looks like 4-2-3-1 suits us best but I don't think we played it in pre-season. E.g. for Bristol I would probably go with

Lumley

Dijksteel Hall Fry Bola

McNair Crooks

Tav Watmore Jones

Uche

Subs: Daniels, Peltier, Spence, Morsy, Howson, Payero, Coburn

@original-fat-bob

The player who was trialed by the London giants five seasons ago, and is plying his trade in non league is unlikely to set the world on fire, and we should have very Good reasons for signing him. I am not optomistic.

Indeed he did. Wrong for any of us to write any incoming player off until he has had the chance to prove himself, regardless of where he comes from.

Where did Leicester get Vardy from I wonder?

Neil Warnock said last season that we missed Tavarnier a lot when he was injured. So I think that was the reason why Boro signed Payero. They both could make things happen on the right.

Here is a good analyses on Payero: https://totalfootballanalysis.com/player-analysis/martin-payero-202021-scout-report-tactical-analysis-tactics

Now we need another one on the left. Bolasie would do nicely, thank you. He is still without a club but can we afford him?

And we all know another centre forward is a must. So a lot of work in progress. Up the Boro!

@original-fat-bob. I am assuming that he would fight for his place as we would then have two players who can play in that position.  For me, at present, he is No1 choice but we do need cover for him. 😎
