Just finished desert and found we are 1-0.  I think you should recommend we sell him more often! 😉😎

Ha! Now don’t exaggerate my comments!

He’s been Boro’s best so far, involved in everything good.

Balogun has been an improvement on recent starters as well.

Not too much to shout about in that first half but we got on top for about 15mins or so and the goal came.

Another in the second half please.

A first half that took Boro quite a long time to get going as they lacked the desired urgency. Tav's goal has at least settled the nerves but a few players in a red shirt look a bit off it - notably Balogun and Bola - Balogun's first touch has been poor and has lost the ball before he can do anything and Bola has looked ponderous when placed in good positions to cross but has instead tried to beat his man twice before losing the ball.

A second goal is needed sooner rather than later as Cardiff have spurned a few chances - Boro need to play the ball quicker and break the lines as Cardiff are happy to see Boro spread the ball from side to side. Unfortunately, not many creative options on the bench for Chris Wilder!

I think Balogun still not good enough Boro are very slow in their approach play and very sloppy

No big improvement really.

Half way there

Half time

Half hearted display

No passion, little intensity, no pace, with a preference for passing backwards. A shambles illuminated only by Tav's impressive strike. This a just reward for one of our few players interested in moving the ball forward. A good assist from Balagun who has done nothing else. A young man who doesn't even run around, and whose defensive work from the front is non-existent. McGree very poor to begin with, but gradually getting into the game.

Cardiff have had the better chances, without producing much of quality.

We have to take this game by the scruff of the neck and put pressure on Cardiff from the beginning of the second half, something we have conspicuously failed to do so far.

Thanks for all the updates. Does not sound like I am missing much and disappointed that we are not really at it given what is at stake. 😖😎

Always liked QPR....

Come on you hoops....

Simply nothing to have to say about that tonight. Terrible to watch and disappointing lack of urgency. But. 2 goals to the good, so all the pressure on the Blades now.

A strange game that was played out like a dead rubber for much of it.

Still, a fairly routine win and we remain in the hunt.

Not too sure what to make of it to be honest. Was that a calm performance that coolly got the job done or was it an uninspiring, drifting one that failed to demonstrate that we’re really up for the fight?

I managed to catch a bit of the game (and even saw Tav’s goal mid-meal with a sneaky use of the wifi).
Back in time for most of the second half and pleased with the result, but we’ll need to improve. It’s very tense isn’t it?

Tav voted MOM but blasted two clear chances over the bar. Very poor performance we’ve lost our spark-

Good to see that we got the win but sounds like there are question marks around the performance.

It looks like we will not get any golf in tomorrow as it is rain all day; I admit to being a fair weather golfer so guilty as charged.

There is talk of trying to arrange a round of golf on Saturday but I have said to count me and Mrs P out, as I have a football match to watch!

Come on you “R”s on Friday night! 😎

Well part one has been successfully achieved with a relatively comfortable win if not completely convincing in large parts. 14 shots and 9 corners delivered just 4 efforts on target with some pretty decent chances spurned particularly from Jones and Tav, who resorted to Row-Z efforts after his first-half strike. McGree grew into the game and added that midfield drive and urgency that has often been lacking - Howson too got better as the game went on. Still not much of note from any of the four strikers who made it onto the pitch and it may well be that it's our midfield that offer the best chance of goals - providing they have enough chances. So over to Sheff Utd on Friday as they now have a bit of pressure on their trip to QPR.

The relief of a win!

Terribly scrappy game, but we deserved the 3 points. Boro fought and competed hard, giving little away. Where was the urgency, though? Did nobody tell the players that Sheffield United had a +4 goal difference on us? We halved that tonight, but we really should have gone for the jugular against poor opposition. We will definitely have to play much better in the last 2 games, which of course we have to win. And if, by some miracle, we do reach the play-offs, gawd help us if we play at half throttle like we did tonight.

My MOM was Mr Dynamo, Jonny Howson, closely followed by Bamba, McGree, Bola and McNair. I thought Luke Daniels had another good game, too. How nice it is to have a competent keeper between the sticks!

Well that wasn’t very pretty but they did what they had to do and got a win, scored a couple of goals and kept the pressure on Sheffield United. I thought that Howson stepped up a gear in the second half and made the difference. I do like what I’ve seen of McGree. He looks like a proper player and hats off to the recruitment team. The defence was solid as ever and Daniels makes me feel more secure than Lumley did.

Watmore was the pick of the forwards and the other three struggled to get into the game. It’s no surprise that the two goals came from midfield and the way that we play means that the midfield players need to get into the box - particularly on the back post to give us more options.

For those who like to believe in the symmetry of life, if Sheffield draw 1-1 on Friday and we again win 2-0, we will have identical goal difference and for and against. I’m not sure what happens if it stays like that. Anybody know?

…..I just noticed in the league table that QPR and Coventry have identical records but QPR are shown ahead of Coventry. Is that just lazy typesetting, or is there a genuine reason.

The old excuse that it's the result that counts rather than the performance doesn't wash with me after a display that showed little of the intensity that we are entitled to expect at such a crucial stage of the season.

All of the conditions were in place for an emphatic win in the second half as Cardiff were forced to come out leaving themselves exposed for counter-attacks. Instead we slowed the game down, time-wasted, got a booking for kicking the ball away and played for the final whistle.

Howson was my M-o-M as one of the few determined to move the ball forward and make things happen. In this he was well supported by McGree, whilst Dijksteel played with quality and pace throughout. Sol could scarcely be faulted either.

Tav faded, and lost his shooting boots as the game progressed, whilst Watmore was our only striker worthy of the name.

Crooks'  enhanced his reputation by his absence and it will be good to have him back, fit and fully rested for the final two games. On this performance we certainly need him.

Onwards and sideways.

Interesting poser of what happens if points, goal difference, goals scored are the same - if it's one-on-one record we lose out (2-0, 1-4) or if it's red and yellow card count we miss out. Our best chance would probably to draw straws 🤔

@lenmasterman

I agree that Crooks could make a difference but who does he replace out of McGree and Tavernier?

Maybe because QPR have beaten Coventry twice (2-0, 2-1)?

Could be number of wins which would by then favour us. There must be a system and you can be sure that Boro would come out worst.

Given Bola's poor end product on the left, playing Tav as left wing-back as suggested by several others would allow Crooks to come into midfield.

As per EFL regulations as opposed to the PL, the team with the most goals scored is then the deciding criteria.

If that is the same then it is decided by the respective league record against each other, taking in order of precedence, points gained, goal difference and goals scored. 😎

Good question SelwynOz and a quick Google search hasn't found me an answer. If we do end up all square after the last match  let's hope its not decided on Fair Play. I am sure wechave an excess of yellow cards over the season.

I wouldn't fancy us to get a draw against straws.

Apparently PL rules state if goal difference and goal scored are the same then there would be a play-off at a neutral venue to determine the final place should it be necessary for European qualification. So maybe a pre-play-off play-off?

As I see it, in typical Boro fashion, QPR will draw with Sheffield on Friday putting them three points ahead.

On the final day of the season Sheffield will lose to Fulham whilst we win at Preston but lose out on sixth place by goal difference! 😎

OK, Here are the EFL rules on the matter (note I've edited this post and added all the rules just to show they've thought of absolutely everything)...

9.2 If two or more Clubs have the same number of points, goal difference and goals scored the highest placed Club shall be determined by the respective League records against each other, taking into account in order of precedence, points gained, goal difference and goals scored.

9.3 If the above procedures do not separate the Clubs then the highest placed Club shall be determined by reference to the following criteria, in the order prescribed:

9.3.1 number of wins;

9.3.2 goals scored in away games; or

9.3.3 in accordance with the provisions of Regulation 9.4.

9.4 Where two or more Clubs are tied after the procedures set out in Regulations 9.1 to 9.3 inclusive then the highest placed Club shall be the Club which has accumulated the lowest total number of penalty points (as determined in accordance with Regulations 9.5 and 9.6) following the completion of 42 League Matches in the relevant Season.

9.5 Each cautionable or sending-off offence committed by a Club’s Players in each League Match during a playing season will incur that Club a set number of penalty points in accordance with the following table:

PENALTY POINTS INCURRED

Any cautionable offence - 4 penalty points

Denying the opposing team a goal or an obvious goal-scoring opportunity by deliberately handling the ball - 10 penalty points

Denying a goal or an obvious goal-scoring opportunity to an opponent whose overall movement is towards the offender’s goal by an offence punishable by a free kick - 10 penalty points

Serious foul play - 12 penalty points

Spitting at an opponent or any other person - 12 penalty points

Violent conduct - 12 penalty points

Using offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or gestures - 12 penalty points

Receiving a second caution in the same Match - 10 penalty points

9.6 Where any sending-off offence is subject to a successful claim for wrongful dismissal in accordance with the Disciplinary Regulations of the Football Association, any penalty points that the sending-off offence would otherwise have incurred shall be disregarded for the purposes of calculating a Club’s cumulative total of penalty points in accordance with this Regulation.

9.7 Where two or more Clubs are still tied after the procedures set out in Regulations 9.1 to 9.6 inclusive, then the highest placed Club shall be the Club which has accumulated the lowest number of sending off offences which attract 12 penalty points in accordance with the table set out in Regulation 9.5 (subject always to Regulation 9.6).

9.8 If the above procedures do not separate the Clubs, then the Clubs concerned shall play off a deciding League Match or Matches under arrangements determined by the League. The net gate money, after deducting the usual match expenses and Venue Costs (as defined below) shall be equally divided between the two competing Clubs. The League shall be responsible for the financial arrangements made with the venue staging the match (and any such costs shall be the ‘Venue Costs’).

Thanks for the info, KP. That’s a relief. Given how much the FA hates us, I wouldn’t have been surprised for the system to be the side nearer London gets the pole position!

Whilst I am one of the Boro supporters who doesn’t like Connolly I think the fact that he was boood by some morons when he came in to the field was pathetic.

The lad couldn’t wait to get off the field at the final whilst ripping his shirt off and throwing it down on the ground.

Very disappointing and not very sportsmanlike from a partisan Boro crowd.
