I’ve been listening on Radio 4 to some people’s experiences of the UK’s Ukrainian refugee system. It clearly isn’t working, primarily because we stand alone in Europe in asking for VISAs, which seem almost impossible to access.

I’m appalled by how my country is dealing with the situation but maybe I’m missing something. We were told by our Home Secretary that there would be security issues if we allowed refugees to arrive without VISAs, but we’re talking about mainly women and children here, desperate to escape a war and in need of our help.

I love to hear what your views are about what the UK’s doing, particularly anyone who thinks our Government has got it right by being out of step with Europe.

I’m in a bit of an echo chamber on Social Media, where most people concur with my views, but I’d genuinely be interested to hear other opinions on this topic.

Almost every evening I express to my wife just how appalled I am at how we as a once proud nation are dealing with these people, desperate for their own and their children's safety and unimaginably worried about their loved ones left behind. We have been humbled by the response of the ordinary Polish people especially, but also the Moldovans, Slovakians, Hungarians and Rumanians,  all demonstrating the very best of human nature.

Sadly all I can see is a government and its leader  that is revelling in being able to grandstand on the world stage, to deflect from domestic pressures  but mostly all unable to see that barely anyone in Europe or the USA  or anywhere else in the world really gives a t*ss about what the UK government has to say.

Thankfully we have been supplying arms and intelligence to Ukraine. But when it comes to anything at a human or compassionate level I am ashamed of my country.

There.

Sorry to echo what I suspect are your views and sorry to those in here that prefer us not to express our political opinions  but most of all though  I am sorry to the displaced Ukranians our leaders are putting through the mill in our name.

I heard an MP questioning the PM today and said she had a case where a pregnant woman who had a refugee sponsor here was told she’d have to wait until she’d had her baby, so he/she could be registered as a birth. The PM said he’d look into the case but that’s not good enough, we should be erring on the side of compassion not online VISAs.
