Just watched the Inside Matchday for the match. Always interesting to see.
Really noticed at the end just how much positive reinforcement that Steffen was getting from the coaching team. Carrick, Woodgate and Fettis all made a huge point of giving him multiple hugs and praise. Indicates to me that they know he is receiving criticism for his performances and that he needs a lot more praise than you might expect. He has talked in the past, I think, about issues around mental health so I suspect that also plays into it to.
Although Steffen hasn't played like a £80K/week keeper, I do think the criticism I've seen has been over the top. He's also clearly playing to order at the risk of making a catastrophic error.
@deleriad. I agree that the criticism of Steffen has been OTT. I have no problems with the team playing out from the back, it is the correct thing to do and only giving it a boot up field as and when necessary.
The problem has been and still persists with Steffen and all players, at times, is that their decision making or execution is some times flawed. It is an area which he needs to continue to work on.
We saw a classic example of it on Saturday when he was so slow in passing the ball that a Watford attacker actually made contact with his clearance and it could so easily have ricocheted into the net rather than to one of our players.
Still work in progress if he wishes to be a PL keeper deserving of £80k per week. 😎
