I felt the red was harsh but could understand why the officials saw it differently to be honest. From their viewpoint, it could have been deemed as a two-footed challenge that endangered the opponent.

I don’t think it did and some refs may not have have even given a free-kick such was the nature of the challenge but I’d be wary of appealing.

I quite agree. The old man will be moaming again but Paddy was showing his studs all the way through. The Gazette picture show that well: https://www.gazettelive.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/what-referee-told-neil-warnock-19854156

Very similar in a way to the Blackburn match and Fry's injury. Both unintended but dangerous play.

I would like to hear Bob's comment as an ex-ref. Luckily the desision did not cost us the points. Up the Boro!

No foul hard challenge but fair Referee and assistant got it wrong in my opinion.

I think an appeal would be successful and if VAR in Premiership would have not been given

Well that was a hard watch - but we got over the line

Huddersfield goal good free kick

Whatmore - great goal

Was Grant Hall offside

Poor penalty but it went in

Didnt look like  a red card, but these days it say hard to tell given how players collapse in a heap in a slight breeze

Last 10 mins a little like the Alamo, lucky the shot that hit the post didnt go in

Just glad we got 3 points, still think we are no where good enough to challenge, but I am a glass half full person where the team is concerned, decades of watching the team have had this affect on me............

OFB, It's amazing really, one match the referee doesn't see a boot in the face in the penalty area and doesn't even seem curious about what happened and last night a referee sees something that didn't happen and gives a Red Card. Again an decision that could have cost Boro points.

Now it seems that Macnair didn't touch the Huddersfield player so if the Card is rescinded what happens to him? My guess is nothing.

No wonder Mr Warnock gets stressed about the standard of refereeing.

Stay safe everyone.

UTB,

John

Their free kick! Ball front on to goal. wall? standard ten yards, keeper standing to one side of his goal? Shooter chooses to go to the bigger gap, hits ball reasonably, not near post, keeper makes attempt at save, never near the ball. Is he a keeper? They could have scored with same free kick at other end, but outside post. Juring the late seige, our keeper was so confused that he wandered outside the frame of his goal during a frenzied attack by Huddersfield in which the ball was being pinged everywhere. Holds head!!!

Loved their left winger, during the last twenty he was unplayable, he ran wherever he fancied, very fast, and skillful, in fact brilliant.

Boro Fan TV photo on their facebook page...

Assuming the photo is accurate (I can't believe it won't be) then I take back my comment on not endangering the opponent and it being harsh, though I stand by my understanding of why McNair was sent off.

Andy, you're not wrong, that looks like a suspension.

Watching the video in normal speed it looks like a fair and strong tackle. Watching it in slow motion it looks like Paddy had his studs towards the ball rather than the upper part of his boot. Combining the slow motion and the photo where his studs are showing then the free kick and a yellow is fair enough and a red maybe a tad harsh but it happens. How the same Linesman can spot that yet couldn't spot Watmore being tugged back seems strange. Don't start me on Hall's disallowed goal and his positioning when the ball was played as oppose to when he headed it. Overall the Linesman made me uncomfortable all night along with the Ref.

Well that was a battling and somewhat fortuitous three points from a not entirely convincing display.  The performance was like the proverbial curate's egg, good in parts and equally bad in others.

Yet another slow start with Huddersfield in the ascendency from the off and looking as if they would runaway with it after a superb free kick had put them into the lead.  We then start to get our act together and Watmore scored a cracking goal having picked up a flick on by Fletcher and beat and held off two men before curling it around two defenders into the far corner.

Fletcher then had the responsibility of penalty taker and tried his best to imitate BA but failed by scoring, just!

We dominated the early part of the second half but again, despite a series of free kicks and corners, we were unable to offer a serious threat on goal.  Huddersfield then came back into the game and similar to ourselves, on many occasions, failed to take two/three golden opportunities to score; it became abundantly clear why they have only scored the same number of goals as ourselves.

With regard to the sending off I was in agreement with Mark Drury, on BBC Radio Tees, who said that the tackle did not look right to him and that there was an element of two feet and studs showing.

NW is saying that PM did not catch the player but that is not the point and the panel may take the view that there was an element of recklessness about it; we have had a few appeals go in our favour so I just wonder if our luck may run out with this one.

It was interesting to hear NW say that the Referee confirmed it was the linesmen who gave it from a far from ideal position so whether that will have any bearing on the appeal remains to be seen.

In true Boro fashion we then had a final 10 nail biting minutes as the team tried and eventually succeeded in holding out through a display of sheer guts, determination, bodies on the line and a bit of luck thrown in.

It now remains to be seen if this is the start of our run for home or just another false dawn in a catalogue of many over the years. 😎

@plato agree he is not a good keeper, as I said the last10 minutes was a siege and you could say they were unlucky not to equalise, the young winger and striker made a difference, it's all if buts, should and could have....

That was brilliant. Thank you very much for everyone’s kind thoughts. I went missing on this forum in late January as I was in such pain with a cracked rib after another fall, but am well on the road to recovery now, can cough without that shooting pain. I don’t know why my latest project on the history of Boro strikers keeps on appearing on ‘Reasons to dislike 2020’ as I set the heading as ‘A history of Boro strikers’. Perhaps there’s a limit on the number of subjects one is allowed to set up, but I don’t want to disturb Werder during his well earned sabbatical.

I just knew Mbenza would score with that free kick, he’s done it before.

Thanks for doing the preview for the Boro V Huddersfield Game.

Redcar Red and myself discussing the preview for the Reading game do you wish to do that one or is anyone else interested to share it around?

If not either RR or myself will do it.

Just post on here so we know

many thanks

Despite a jarring start, a nail-biting finish and a lack of multiple clear-cut chances, I was encouraged by last night's display.

Rather than us making a slow start, I'm inclined to give Huddersfield credit for a blistering one - I thought they were excellent for ten minutes or so in arguably the best spell we'd come up against all season. That our heads didn't go down was to our credit and for the next hour or more we dominated the game in my view.

What's more, we actually played some football at times! I witnessed some forward passes on the floor, even three in a row - maybe four! We also frequently ran at defenders via Watmore and Kebano. To see Fisher being brought down for the penalty made me smile. It's not very often that our fullback/wingback has shown that kind of freedom and ambition to support an attack.

I do feel that the pace and direct running of Watmore allied to the natural movement of Fletcher is a big plus for us. Fletcher looked pretty rusty to me (understandably) but still created space for teammates and offered more than we've seen from some of his colleagues even at no more than 85% capacity. Kebano's comfort on the ball, consistently forward-thinking attitude and ability to beat an opponent is a big bonus and we have Tavernier, Bolasie and Mendez-Laing to add into that mix as the season goes on.

There's some confirmation bias here and I have to recognise that we were playing an opposition in even worse form than ourselves but the midfield was so much better with only Howson and Morsy instead of those two plus Saville.

The blueprint for the rest of the season is there for me - not necessarily the individuals but the set up and the attitude - and if we stick with it we'll get better at it, especially as Fry returns to shore up the back end.

Looking further ahead it's clear that we'll need a good quality keeper next year and as the season has gone on I've become less and less convinced about Morsy if I'm on honest. He works hard and adds bite but I don't see much of a footballer in there so that's another area to look at, though it could just be that Wing or Tav can play in there in a more attacking side. I'd love to see Coulson come again for that left wingback role and Bola can easily move to the left of three centre backs. Kebano is one we should look to sign permanently if possible in my view.

I never expected even a top half finish this season and still feel we'll come up short of the play-off spots but last night's type of display gave me some much needed relief and hope that there might be a decent team to watch there next season, and a play-off spot perhaps then.

Cheers OFB. Let's give others a chance but I'm happy to pick it up if there's no takers by midday Friday.

The team was better without our 'wandering minstrel', apologies to Ken, and the Terriers manager said they couldn't cope with Watmore's movement. Will the 'wandering minstrel' amble in on Saturday?

@john-richardson I thought you were the manager of the two terriers, John! Or is the way you talk in the posh Norfolk, like. Up the Boro!

Don't know about posh, I married a posh Geordie though! Well so she tells me and who am I to disagree? Nodding of heads all over the DiasBoro. The two terriers is one of my responsibilities when I get near it and North Norfolk is posh but West Norfolk farming land is salt of the earth, a spade is a side and a tractor a tractor.

Stay safe up in snowy Finland,

"A posh Geordie" now there's a contradiction in terms if ever I heard one 🙂

I see Huddersfield are the next club to be tempted by Ravel Morrison.

The bloke must have a hell of an agent!

So long as you tell her it was "Redditch red" and not Redcar red".

I've met a few posh Geordie lasses in my time working up in "Heed", discretion is the better part of valour!
