@jarkko

Jarkko, it depends on the cost. Normally the Premier Inn (room only) on Wilson St (also near the station) was cheaper than the Holiday Inn (breakfast included) especially for a midweek match when I didn't bother with breakfast and could get the 06:45 train from Middlesbrough to Carlisle and was home by about 11:00. For a Saturday match I would have to leave the Riverside about 20 minutes before the end of a game if I wanted to get the last train home that night and there isn't an early train for me on the Sunday morning. Occasionally (with breakfast) the Holiday Inn is then cheaper. Once a month I travel over on a Friday and spend the weekend with my sister who lives in a village about 10 miles from Middlesbrough.

I don't like wandering around on my own at night so I usually have an evening meal at the hotel and the Premier Inn has a more varied menu though once I add on extra drinks I spend more there. I also like the North Yorkshire Moors but I don't drive so even when I lived in the North East I never used to get out there much. The first family holiday we ever had was a couple of weeks in 1956 in a rented farm cottage about 20 minutes walk from Glaisdale. (There was was no electricity but gas lighting and cooking over the log fire!) Nowadays the nearby Lake District is similarly hard for me to travel around. In September 2019 I went to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway gala on the Friday before a match and I had planned to go again last year before Covid ruined things.

Fisher, Morsy, Fletcher & Kebano out, Hall, Tav ( 😀 ), Mendez-Laing & Britt ( ☹️ ) in, so Jarkko has his wish:

Hall, Tavernier, Mendez-Laing and Britt in for Fisher, Morsy, Kebano and Fletcher.  JH is the Captain and not BA!

Looks like it might be 442.  Good to see Tav back but can't say I am feeling any more confident having seen that BA and NML are starting. 😎

Boro have been the better side but find themselves behind having conceded a shockingly poor goal.

Sigh.

Vic's view of it:

Boro were going well then concede textbook Cardiff goal. Long punt forward wins throw, humped long into the box, Morrison header. (0-1, 38mins)

I see Britt's missed one already...

Well that's gone very much as expected.  By and large we huff and puff and do most of the attacking without result, they get a throw in and score from it! 😎

This game is winnable so long as we score the next goal.

To score you need to have an idea as to what you are doing and presently we are clueless - and then we score!! 😎

Goal! Middlesbrough 1, Cardiff City 1. Patrick McNair (Middlesbrough) left-footed shot from very close range to the top left corner. Assisted by Chuba Akpom.

Pleased I deserted the ☀️To come back and watch the second half.

Tavernier makes a big difference to this team and I hope Boro can keep hold of him McNair and Fry for next season.

Did you see the stats for how many corners Boro had ? double figures !

A lot happier tonight than Tuesday it makes the weekend seem brighter somehow!

Am I the only one that suffers so much when we get beat or is that the norm for being a Boro fan?

Again poor show from Britt. Surprisingly Akpom did more in ten minutes than Britt could manage in the time he was on the pitch. But it was a poor game, much like watching paint dry.

FT: 1-1 A spirited revival to force a little bit of luck that led to the leveller & a good point against a form side - but for long spells Boro lacked penetration & imagination & leaked a predictable textbook Cardiff goal. Still in it. Just

Vic's right about the "just":  the Tykes are four points ahead on 51 with a game in hand after beating Millwall 2-1 at Oakwell, while the Bluebirds are three points ahead with a GD of +14 (Boro only +3).  The gap's starting to yawn...

@original-fat-bob.  It's the norm.

I am still frustrated despite the draw as I believe had Kebano and Johnson started and the team told not to cross anything into the box over knee height we may well have won.

Instead for large parts of the game we played to Cardiff's strengths and exactly what NW had identified we should not do.

I stll cannot understand why he picks BA. Both he and NML had little positive impact on the game. 😎

You're not the only one OFB. A poor Boro performance takes me a least a couple of days to recover. At least this season I am at home but when I have been at the Riverside and we've lost it is a long slow depressing journey home the next day.

Even the nice Malbec I was drinking hadn't had much affect until we equalised. We didn't get the hammering I expected but it wasn't a surprise that although we had most of the possession a Cardiff scored from a set play and it was looking like that would be enough. They had done the same against Bournemouth who had 69% possession. The Boro fight towards the end of the game brightened me up. Maddo said before and during the game that we needed to put in low crosses as that was what the big Cardiff defenders couldn't cope with. Tav started well. faded then came back into the game. He is the spark we need.

It was disappointing that with Cardiff’s slow back three we chose to try and hit it long over their heads and turn them rather than pass through them and take them on.

I got the feeling that the visitors were below par but we played ok and definitely deserved something from the game.

Ultimately, neither keeper had a great deal to do and maybe a draw was fair despite Cardiff never really laying a glove on us, given our own lack of quality in possession.

Going forward, I think Tav at right wingback and Kebano behind the strikers will give us more. Possibly Johnson as left wingback too. There’s no cure for the lack of Fletcher I’m afraid unless Bolasie can play there.

And Cardiff had no cornes. We were the better team so devastated they scored from a throw in. Fry didn't jump fot it and Bettinelli left his original position just when the ball came in. We should have won that game even we did not play well. Up the Boro!

NML looks a like he needs a lot more fitness training to get up to speed and worryingly he looks like a spent force who has lost that edge that he once possessed. The brief cameo from Spence was light years away from NML.

As for Britt all I can say is that both he and the Manager are lucky there are no fans in the ground. If NML is unfit then Britt looks like he can't be bothered, his reading of the game and speed of movement is pitiful to be subjected to. If I was Warnock I would shake his hand and wish him well but call it a day, he adds nothing to the team and in fact detracts from the collective effort.

Akpom isn't great but he at least showed effort and commitment. Kebano made a huge difference and having Johnson on the opposite side just gave us more width and a threat of creating something from both flanks. Bola and Johnson link up well and its a shame that they both weren't on the pitch at the same time this afternoon.

Hoof ball was utterly pointless as a tactic against a far bigger side only "bettered" by Cardiff's total lack of desire to attempt to play any kind of football. Fair play to McCarthy as its given them a good run of games with an impressive points haul but that was a terrible game of football.

Frustratingly the hope is still there, a positive run of games could see us sneak in but for that to happen NW needs to settle on a team and stick with it and one that has to include Kebano, Tav, Watmore and Johnson who are capable of creating and making things happen.

NML is a project that we haven't time for and Britt has departed in all but body.

It just shows what happens when you dont play to the oppositions strengths, lump the ball into the box and nothing, play along the floor confusion and a goal. Agree Britt has left the building, personally I wouldn't  play him again he appears to be disinterested. NML adds nothing as well, not fit enough.

The goalkeeper also doesnt instil confidence, he kicks are not good

On to the next game with no confidence that we will get a result......

@redcarred.  I was never convinced by the signing of both Bolasie and NML as both had not played for a considerable period and were likely to take time to get up to speed and also risked injury given the time they had been out for so long.

At this stage of the season we needed recruits who could hit the ground running and that is why Kebano was a sensible loan player to take on.

Pre match I said that both NML and BA should be left on the bench and that NK and MJ should start.  The latter pair certainly made a difference when they were introduced and I agree that injury or fatigue apart they should be starters each game as should Tav and Watmore. I also said we would be better with the back four that started the season and we were, with the exception of one lapse.

As this is the Boro, no doubt they will continue to to stay within touching distance of the top six until virtually the end of the season when they will miss out and we will reflect upon so many missed opportunities. 😎

Sadly Darlington lost at home to Hornchurch in the Quarterfinals of the Football Trophy Trophy so that’s them finished for the season as the National Leagues North and South have been declared null and void, the Quakers having only played 11 League games all season. Also the FA are recommending that both Divisions of the Northern League be declared null and void too for the second season running.

Meanwhile despite Dover Athletes going on furlough and unable to complete their fixtures, the National League continues with Hartlepool in 3rd position going for their 8th successive home win and are leading Barnet 1-0 at halftime with the match being televised live at the moment on BT Sport 2HD for anyone interested.

After the huge disappointment of the Bristol game I didn’t stay up to watch the game. It was being shown here on cable and so I was able to record it and watch when I woke up.

It wasn’t wonderful but we were much more coherent than midweek and looked to be playing most of the football that was being played. Cardiff looked big and played the most basic type of football you can imagine. They really looked like the kind of team that would be destroyed in the Premiership.

Their goal was against the run of the play and I’m surprised that nobody has commented on the most basic defensive error that we committed. We had nobody on the back post which should be automatic for a long throw (and probably for corners as well). So many goals from long throws are looping headers that are out of reach of the goalkeeper who is trying to get to the ball on his near post. Anybody standing on the back post would have headed it clear.

Tavernier looked a class above most of the rest and him, Watmore and Kebano are a combination that will always deliver something decent.

We’re hanging in there and the fact that there are so many teams with something still to play for at top and bottom means that every week there will be surprises and we will see some movement in the table. Unfortunately both Reading and Bournemouth won after looking as if they could both be heading down the table. It’s hard to know what to make of Barnsley but they’ve put an amazing run together. The simple fact is that we have to get something approaching 2 points per game average for the rest of the season and, to be honest, I’m not sure that we can do it.

@selwynoz

i had another look at the EFL highlights of the game and especially the Cardiff Goal. I immediately spotted that it was the result of a foul throw. The momentum was gained by the players left foot encroaching the field of play and onto the pitch. As the assistant referee was near to this incident it should have been spotted and disallowed. Hope Neil Warnock brings it to the media attention for future games and officials to note.

@ofb

I hadn't noticed that. I wonder if a lot of long throws actually encroach but the linesman is too busy checking offside or other stuff in the penalty area. It would be something useful thing for VAR to follow rather in the way that no-balls in cricket are now ruled by the fourth umpire.

One thing that I would say about the Cardiff game is that it was nice to see a referee who was solidly in charge, seemed to get most of the decisions right and was able to maintain a good relationship with the players. It was actually the Australian ref that Warnock had praised last week. I wonder if he had already known that he was doing this game. NW's cunning enough to slip it into his presser.

It will be fun to watch everyone whip themselves up into a frenzy again if we get two wins this week. I'll be no different 🙂

@selwynoz

Assistant referees are instructed to observe any encroachment by players taking throw in as you cannot be offside from a throw in so it’s an easy decision to make. Assistant Ref didn’t do his job properly.

I too thought the Australian referee had a good game although I did hear Neil Warnock use some fruity language about one of his decisions!

@selwynoz

I did the same selwynoz and you can fast forward when the ball is out of play and it was out of play a lot. There were 64 throw ins which is about 20% higher than normal. Not sure how Cardiff have won so many games on the bounce, as they didn't have a shot of any kind after they scored, although they probably thought that we couldn't score, and their pass completion rate was only 42%. There was one foul throw given but that was of the  Barragan type not thrown from behind the head.
