1 2 3, it's so easy, like taking candy from a baby... Yes, Boro have started the campaign on song and making it look easy with 123 currently being Boro's projected points total for the season as they sit four clear of their nearest rival with an automatic-promotion five-point cushion.

Surely, it's not supposed to be this easy - though I'd still advise against attempting to test the ease of taking candy from one of the local babies as you stroll through Stewart Park in your happy space. 1960's innocent lyrics don't age well and should not be taken literally - you may well discover it's some time before you can whistle any kind of tune (happy or otherwise) as you wait for attention at A&E.

While few were expecting a walk in the park this season, this is officially Boro's best start to a season in their history and Teesside is positively radiating - OK, probably not as much as when those 12 nuclear reactors are built just up the road in Hartlepool but nevertheless it's a glow normally only possessed by people after the mother of all Ready Brek binges - As Jon Pertwee voiced in that iconic commercial, Get up and Glow! We are top of the league, we are top of the league (OK he didn't say the last bit).

Incidentally, readers will no doubt be relieved to know that X-energy, the partner-company involved in this nuclear project, has absolutely no connection whatsoever to a certain unpredictable South African born ketamine-fueled owner of X and Space-X. You'll be reassured to know it was in fact founded by an Iranian-born American instead... Hmm maybe not - at least the government announcement that safety checks will be fast-tracked has surely put everybody's mind at rest...

Talking of meltdowns, the summer of trepidation felt by supporters now seems a long long time ago. Many of the Boro faithful were fearing the worst after a winless pre-season and worrying transfer inactivity only punctuated by strong rumours that Danny Ings was seemingly being lined up to partner Riley McGree in the treatment room.

Thankfully, the Ings deal didn't materialise and he instead joined one of the favourites to get out of the Championship in Sheffield United, who rather unintentionally still remain so. However, misgivings on Teesside about Ings fitness levels may have seemed unfounded as he manged 12 whole minutes for the Blades back in August at the Riverside - though that unfortunately has been the sum total of his contribution this season as he hasn't kicked a ball anywhere else after picking up a hamstring injury.

Anyway, enough of this dwelling at the bottom of the league - we're here to focus on the top of the table! Boro are as top as top can be after six games but which team will still want to be top of the league come the end of the season?

The answer of course is Southampton - perhaps somewhat a puzzling answer solved by knowing that Will Still is the confusingly named new man in charge at St Mary's and he'd no doubt like his team to finish top of the league. In fact, at 32, he's the youngest ever manager in the Championship and he's a Belgium-born Englishman who grew up in the Walloon region and went to a French school but also speaks Dutch - thus making him practically unique as a trilingual Englishman!

Still (as in Will) confessed that he decided as teenager to become a football coach after playing the Championship Manager video game and at 17 he moved to Preston to study coaching. After that he had a number of jobs as a video analyst, including at Standard Liège before becoming assistant at Belgium second-tier club Lierse, where he was eventually appointed caretaker manager at the age of 24. However, since he didn't have his UEFA A Licence he couldn't under the rules remain in post for more than 60 days so instead moved to Beerschot as assistant with the club subsequently winning promotion to the Pro League.

After that he joined French club Reims as Óscar García's (former Brighton manager, plus 3 weeks at Watford) assistant and then became their caretaker manager after the Spaniard was sacked in October 2022 - the club were actually fined €25,000 per game as he still (not as in Will) didn't have his A Licence. The young coach (name avoided) then spent last season as manager of Lens before Southampton chose to appoint him in the summer to fulfill his ambition of managing a club in England.

Interestingly at Lens, Still (it's so confusing I blame the parents) appointed his 27-year old brother Nicolas and 33-year old brother Edward as his assistants - neither of whom joined him at St Mary's as the club opted for a more experienced coaching team with Paul Trollope as his assistant (who was Rob Edwards assistant at Luton) and recently retired from playing, Adam Lallana, but actually 5 years older than Still.

It's fair to say that Southampton have not had the start they'd have hoped for this season. Having won their opening game against Wrexham - though only courtesy of a 96th minute winner that followed a 90th minute equaliser. The Saints have not won any of their last 5 league games since then and are languishing just one point above the relegation zone with 6. In fact their last game saw them lose 3-1 at Hull with manager Will Still bemoaning his team for gifting all three goals despite controlling the game - though Saints supporters complain that the team also lack a cutting edge.

Although that cutting edge does include the recently acquired Finn Azaz and former Boro loanee, Cameron Archer - plus with ex-academy graduate Nathan Wood also in the squad, there's enough former players to worry Typical Boro enthusiasts.

Not only does St Mary's not sound like a place to be feared, the locals have only seen 2 league victories in over a year. So I'd suggest it's not a bad time to play Southampton while they're still (not him) adjusting to lots of changes in playing staff and a new head coach (definitely him) with no experience of managing in England.

Since their only league win on the opening day, they've sold their star midfielder in Mateus Fernades (who was reportedly instrumental in turning that game around) to West Ham for nearly £40m. In a summer that saw the departure of right-winger Tyler Dibling to Everton for £35m - plus left-winger Suleman for £15m, defender Jan Bednarek and keeper Aaron Ramsdale.

Let's not forget Southampton only just avoided the lowest ever Premier League points total after a late April nil-nil draw against Man City as they ended up on just 12 points. In theory it's now a  weaker team despite ten new players having arrived with Azaz being the most expensive - along with Tom Fellows from West Brom. It was a window that ultimately saw the club make a £60m profit on transfer deals.

As for Boro, the only real concern has been the temporary loss of three of the five centre-backs that saw Matt Targett forced into the back three after long-throw merchant George Edmunson went the full-Nelson and lost the use of an eye - though the swelling should have eased by Saturday and Lenihan is in theory not injured but being managed after two years out - plus Fry's calf strain is not thought to be anything other than a short-term problem.

Edwards biggest decision is probably who he starts up front, with both Strelec and Sène making their case after a goal in each half. What is reassuring to supporters is as well as them being both off the mark and despite being different types of strikers, they both look like they know how to finish. Not sure how long they will be content with 45 minutes but at least it's a good problem to have.

Boro are no doubt grateful to perpetual energy machine, Tommy Conway, for looking like he provides an extra man - plus he's probably the most enthusiastic goal celebrater at the club and perhaps Marcus Rashford should give him call for tips instead of simply pointing a finger at his head after scoring a worldie. With Nypan looking better with every game and Morris and Hackney controlling the midfield, Targett and Brittain adding strength and balance at wing-back, then this is a team that probably deserves their top of the table position (speaking as a neutral of course).

There certainly looks like there's more to come from this Boro team from an attacking point of view as the new boys settle in and gain better understanding of their teammates. Though this will be another tough test of their credentials on Saturday but there is the advantage that Southampton must travel to Anfield on Tuesday evening to play their Carabao Cup tie, which will surely (hopefully) take quite a bit out of them.

Perhaps the slight worry for everyone on Diasboro is can Boro survive my preview after nine successive defeats on my watch? It was surely a Carrick thing anyway - though better start testing my candy-snatching techniques just in case...

Boro travel to the St Mary's Stadium to play Southampton on Saturday 27th September at 3pm

A lovely opener, Werder, carefully constructed, cleverly themed and seasoned with your usual flair and wit. Premiership quality in every syllable. A thoroughly enjoyable read. Many thanks

Another excellent starter, @werdermouth, both entertaining and enlightening in equal measure.

So, the men of Still, meet the men of steel, who can surely forge a win and bring back another three points. Your run of form must end sometime - let’s hope it turns around for you on Saturday.

I agree with Len and Martin, Werder. I loved your very funny opener, though am still ( not him) trying to get my head around all these stills! Will he still (not him grammatically and maybe not even him after Saturday?) be manager after our game with them? Let’s hope Boro inflict further pain on Southampton and ensure their season remains still-born.

This is a hard game, as you say, regardless of The Saints’ form so far. But surely this time you will break your duck and put points on the leader-board (leader as in opener)? A point for us would probably be a good result. In any case, whatever happens, we’ll STILL be top of the league!

Absolutely brilliant, Werder. You remain the master of the Diasboro opener!

As they say to the victorious defending champ in Boxing, “And STILL…”.

That's a wonderful piece of writing Werder. We're very lucky to be able to read something of that quality, whilst bathing in the glow of unexpected success.

As top as top can be.

Just a quick note as I was able listen to Rob Edwards last night. He was a guest at the weekly podcast of the Echo duo, Dom Shaw and Scott Wilson.

By listening to the show, you can learn more about Edwards as a person.

Up the Boro!

Werder.  That was a piece of journalism of the highest quality and puts many of the so called professionals to shame.

An enjoyable, informative and amusing piece which was a pleasure to read.  Thank you.

We are truly blessed on this blog to have so many valued contributors. 😎

Many thanks for all your comments on the preview, they are very much appreciated. I'm back to my bathroom renovation project shortly after taking the morning off yesterday to write the opener and allowing Mrs Werder some peace and quiet in the home office - though I think she thought I was researching materials for the project 😉

@werdermouth Yes, an excellent starter again from you, (web)master.  Enjoyed it and it also had info enough.

Southampton went out of the League Cup last night with a late winner for Liverpool at Anfield. So let's hope So'ton will be a bit tired on Saturday.

I will be very happy with a point from Saturday. Especially so as there was a curse on Boro when the blog starter comes from Germany. But perhaps the curse is removed now that Edwards in charge. Like the previous one was lifted when we moved away from Ayresome to the Riverside.

My prediction: 1-1 draw with Tommy Conway on 36th minute. Up the Boro!

Wow, what an opener, fantastic read Werder.

Anyone watch Southampton last night, I thought they looked quite impressive despite another defeat to an under strength Liverpool.

They do certainly seem to be in a rut though in that wins are proving very hard to come by for them, confidence is draining / drained, hopefully we can capitalise on that on Saturday but for me this will be the toughest game of the seven we will have had.

I really like Tom Fellows and have a feeling he will start on Saturday, could be their danger man.

I didn't see the Liverpool v Southampton game but read that they played and defended quite well - though I noted the Saints had rested a few players too - Fellows didn't come on until the 88th minute and Azaz wasn't in the squad - I initially assumed he was cup-tied but just checked he wasn't in the squad when Boro played Doncaster either - maybe he's injured?

@werdermouth   If Carlsberg did Football Reviews, they would “still” be only second best to werder.

@werdermouth yes they did rest quite a few, Fellows yes making a very late appearance, dont think he has started a game for them yet, not sure if that is down to injury or tactical.

I was also reading on some Southampton fans forums that Finn Azaz has so far been a big disappointment and isn't convincing them that he's worth the money paid and some calling him one of their worst signings ever and that he's the laziest player they've ever seen. He may well have been just dropped for the Liverpool game as no reports of any injury.

Great opener Werder. We don't have a particularly good record at St.Mary's, only one win there in 7 games with 3 draws, the win was a Premier League game in 2003.

Presidentjump Fellows has started their last two games but was taken off in both of them in the second half as was Finn Azaz. There leading scorer is Ryan Manning the left wing back with 2, they have only 7 goals in total. Apart from Archer and Wood they also have Jack Stephens who had a loan spell with Boro in 2015-6 and made one appearance. He is the captain and only outfield player to play every minute this season in the league

Great spot with Jack Stephens - I hope if he scores he doesn’t celebrate out of respect to that one appearance 10 years ago 😏

@werdermouth yes i read similar, however, also read a piece from Still who stated Azaz would be involved at the weekend and that the players around him need to get used to his style of play and the only way that will happen is with game time.

Nothing too different from the Southampton fans that us fans weren't saying when he was with us, lazy was definitely one of the things quoted by many, he certainly was very marmite across our fan base.

@mw-in-darwin Thanks MW, didn't realise he had started games for them, so not an injury then, obviously another one, similar to Azaz, who are getting used to their surroundings.

I think Southampton will come good, hopefully after we have played them.

Jack Stephens, couldn't even remember him.

His only appearance was in one of our best victories in the recent past, the night we won at Old Trafford in the league cup when we won 3-0 on penalties with Thomas Mijas playing a blinder. He was taken off injured and replaced by Adam Clayton.

  • @mw-in-darwin his name definitely rings a bell, must have just been a young lad when he made that appearance.

So the news is that Lenihan is actually injured again and will be out for a "number of weeks" with an achilles injury - which was also responsible along with an ankle injury for missing the whole of last season. Fry is still not ready to return either but Edmundson is now ok to play.

It does mean that Boro now only have 3 fit centre-backs and hopefully 4 in another week as Fry has started light training. Sounds like it's going to be a bit tight in that department over the next three months unless an academy player can step in to fill the numbers.

Still got a few days left here in beautiful Dalyan in Turkey. We come for a month every June and September. Thanks Diasboro contributors for keeping me updated, with all the news. Let's hope for a win against Southampton.

@werdermouth its a real shame for Lenihan, i didn't see any indication of any troubles he was having against Preston but the concern set in pre WBA that something wasn't right again.

Lenihan is a class centre half when fit but how long can the club keep waiting for this to be the case, its no use to anybody being fit for one game then out for however many.

Similar with Fry, it seems a real problem for the club with injuries in that area, bringing in Jones was vital, we then have Malanda from January but it is a real worry area. Anyone know what is happening with Harley Hunt, I believe he is injured too ?

@werdermouth

This makes the decision to send to send Luke Woolston out on loan this week even more surprising. He was heavily involved in preseason and has been on the bench as well. The Under 21's played on Friday night Bangura played the first half. George Mccormick was not involved so it looks like he is the academy player who is involved on Saturday.
