If ever an international break was welcome, then surely this was one everybody needed (OK, probably not Riley McGree). It's been a dramatic few weeks and quite frankly a bit of a soap opera (cue Eastenders drums). Indeed, a few key actors have unexpectedly written themselves out of the script - with accusations of one having seemingly lost the plot altogether according to the much quoted critic, Crystal Parish.

Unlike the contents of Rob Edward's desk, there's a lot to unpack as we deal with his departure, the return of actual football and the impending appointment of a new management team.

Since I know everyone likes a story (especially at bedtime) and if you're sitting comfortably (some may prefer to lie down - some may need to), then I'll begin with a cautionary tale a long long time ago (just before the international break) in the small town of Little Red North-Riding Hood .

In this case, it was our very own Brothers Grimm, Steve and Keiran that grimly entered Rob Edwards office to talk about the big bad Wolves, who appeared to be all ears...

And what big ears you have Mr Edwards...
"All the better to hear what job offers are becoming available" he retorted.
What big eyes you have Mr Edwards...
"All the better to look surprised when quizzed about rumours" he taunted.
What big teeth you have Mr Edwards...
"Steady on guys, you're getting quite personal now, these teeth are part of my disarming sincerity smile that opens doors for me. I'm just hungry for a new challenge closer to home..."

And with those words, the rather sheepish looking Boro head coach (soon to be in Wolves' clothing) was swiftly axed! There was to be no happy ending to his brief tenure on Teesside

Still, the Boro faithful gave Rob Edwards a well-deserved send off at a raucous Riverside after he was stood down for the Birmingham game. I believe they chanted 'Rob Edwards is a folk hero' - OK, it's possible I misheard and it could've been 'zero' - come to think of it, it may not have been 'folk' either...

Some disgruntled supporters were sufficiently displeased to display banners declaring 'Rob Edwards you rat' - which if true, that could possibly be the first recorded case of a rat actually choosing to jump aboard a sinking ship...

All of which left Gibson and Scott back to the drawing board and in search of their third head coach in less than six months. More on that later but there's a game coming up this weekend and thankfully Adi Viveash remains to steady the ship (definitely not a sinking one) - albeit without Harry Watling this time, who after a few post-Birmingham fist-pump celebrations with the crowd headed down to Wolverhampton to join his pack leader.

So despite all the upheaval, that victory means Boro will head to Oxford with a degree of optimism - which was unlikely to be obtained at Teesside University as I suspect strong local demand means they only offer courses in pessimism - though, despite being heavily oversubscribed, few if any expect to graduate.

This season's trip to Oxford is almost exactly a year since Boro arrived at the Kassam Stadium on the back of a 4-1 win at QPR and a 5-1 thrashing of Rob Edward's Luton at the Riverside. A team brimming with confidence unexpectedly fell behind halfway through the first half but then responded with 4 goals in 12 minutes as they ended up 6-2 winners - thanks to a hat-trick from Latte Lath, a brace from Finn Azaz (plus 2 assists) and a goal from Tommy Conway after coming off the bench.

It was the first time Boro had scored six goals away from home since 1960 - which was an incredible 6-6 draw at Charlton that still remains the highest score draw in football league history.

That victory at Oxford made it 15 goals in three games as Michael Carrick's side moved into 5th spot after 16 games and just like now were only 5 points off top spot. They looked unstoppable as Finn Azaz was establishing himself as player of the month, Ben Doak was unplayable and Latte Lath was on fire. What could go wrong? Well as you know something always does... defensive frailties re-emerged in December, Azaz lost form, then Doak's season was ended by injury and Latte Lath was sold - culminated in just 7 points from the games of January and February.

Only two players who started that game against Oxford will likely start on Saturday in Sol Brynn and Luke Ayling - though even the latter may lose out if Fry and Jones are fit. Few are expecting another goal fest as Boro's attacking talent appears disjointed and lacking confidence - indeed, Strelec's won't have been aided by being part of that 6-0 thrashing of Slovakia on Monday. We can only hope McGree arrives back from his USA friendlies still fit to play as he's starting to look like he can pull the strings in attack.

As for Oxford, well Gary Rowett's side sit one place above the relegation zone with just 3 wins so far this season and only one victory at home. You may recall Rowett was made interim manager at Birmingham when Tony Mowbray was forced to stand down due to health problem - he then took over at the Kassam Stadium just before Christmas and kept them in the Championship.

This may well be Adi Viveash's last game as interim head coach as the search for Edward's successor nears completion. It's as you expect been another media circus with the rumour mill getting cranked up to 11 as the club were linked with a host of out of work actors - sorry managers.

The early bookies favourites of Stevie G and Gary O (there's usually another word after that beginning with N - btw it's not No) were never really in the running as unknown foreign names were gradually sneaked into the list. The former managers of Mogga, Carrick, Southgate and Strachan (sorry I think that last one was part of my AI accumulator) were also ruled out along the way - plus the appearance of Bryan Robson sitting next to Steve Gibson in the director's box led to a few nervous "surely not" being exchanged.

It all culminated with Swiss Morrissey tribute act, Raphael Wicky, emerging as the hot favourite but despite saying 'Please, Please, Please' - he didn't get what he wanted. So instead of Wicky leaks, we started getting second-hand leaks from Swedish media sources such as 'Expressen' and 'Fotbollskanalen' (that's basically the Express and the Football Channel without the accent). Yes, Boro were snatching Kim Hellberg from under the noses (or näsor if you still into Swedish) of Swansea (that's still Swansea in Swedish). It's hoped the man that twice masterminded a second-place finish with Hammarby can make it three in a row and lead Boro to promotion.

According to my Swedish sources, Allen Keys could also have a prominent role in assembling a new-look flat-pack four - though you've probably already guessed (or indeed groaned) that all my Swedish sources unfortunately work at Ikea. Incidentally, there was a Alan Keyes who served as Assistant Secretary of State in Ronald Reagan's government and ran unsuccessfully three times for the Republican presidential nominee - though I think he was not quite the full set...

Anyway, it's not yet official but it would be something of 'katastrof' if the deal fell through at this stage (especially as I'm going early with my opener) but there are work visas and various contract details still to sort out so it could take some time. It's surely something of gamble to bring in a young management duo with no experience of managing in the Championship - but let's not revisit that Woodgate and Keane appointment!

However, from what I've read so far of Kim Hellberg and his assistant David Selini, their methods involve double-training sessions twice a week in order to hone the players into being fit and prepared to press and take control of games. That may all seem plausible in the Swedish top tier (or Allsvenskan as we now know) but they only play 30 games in a season and I'm sceptical that would be easily applicable to a 46-game attritional Championship - where players often rest and recover in between games.

Nevertheless, hard to see when Hellberg is going to find space to impact a new philosophy in the immediate future with Boro set to play 11 games in just over 40 days - hopefully Adi Viveash can help them find a compromise that works with the reality of the grind (I'm not prepared to risk translating that word into Swedish).

So unless it's all been 'falska nyheter' (fake news) a new chapter at Boro begins - we don't yet know if it's going to be a page turner - but let's hope unlike his predecessor, Kim Hellberg is not the author of his own downfall...

Thanks for that Werder - as impressive as it was humorous, and hugely entertaining on a wet and sleety, North Yorkshire morning.

It’s good to have a match coming up - it would be great if our new Swede could turnip for the game.

Absolutely brilliant, Werder! I laughed out loud at Little Red North Riding Hood and the wolf in sheep’s clothing’s responses. You may remember I was very wary writing my Ipswich preview because I can’t easily combine the football stuff with humour; here is the perfect example of what I meant. You have built great humour in throughout, while still setting us up effectively for the Oxford game and the key factors involved.  I almost wrote ‘effortlessly’, but that would be quite wrong: we all know just how much effort goes into writing these openers. I can’t praise you enough for this one.

There must be a Werder for Match Previews of this quality but I can't think of it for the moment. A smorgasbord of humour and information, perhaps. Well done!

Careful, you don’t mangel your words there, @OFB - I’ll continue to rutabaga for the Boro.

What a superb opener werdermouth, thank you, I throughly enjoyed reading it with a smile on my face. I certainly wouldn’t be surprised to see Hellberg (and his no 2 Selini) at the Oxford match to run their eyes over the players.

Come on BORO.

A big thanks to everyone for their very generous comments and glad you enjoyed reading it as much as I had fun writing it - especially as we enter a rather gloomy late autumn!

Thanks Clive and I always enjoy you previews you write them really well - for me once I get going the ideas just flow but it's the final edit that tries to tie everything together that is the tricky bit - cutting out stuff and adding a bit here and there until I'm happy it scans and flows.

Absolutely brilliant thank you Werder.  Such an enjoyable and amusing read; suggest you copy to EG so that they can appreciate and will see just how poor their own articles are! 😎

Thanks KP - though I'm not sure how it would read after the EG had run it through their AI machine - we'd probably have Morrissey as our new head coach...

@werdermouth Thank you for a great opener, again.

With my school Swedish I think you got the tranlations correct. I think the Scandinavian could be a reasonable choice for Boro. Absolut.

Let's see if we can get the strikers firing at Oxford. Perhaps we cannot repeat the result of last season, but we can always try. A 0-2 away win will do nicely, thank you. Up the Boro!

The lull after the storm while we await a work permit apparently, is probably no bad thing.

Ultimately I imagine all the Boro fans and much/all of the Boro heirarchy are going on gut feel alone re Hellberg. Yes, he has an impressive record and seems very promising but that's pretty much all we know.

Given that he was allegedly talking to Swansea before us, this can't be an appointment attributed to our scouting team either.

Perversely, had he arrived in the summer then everything, I think, might have been hunky dory. But coming after the recent turmoil - which feels of the three points variety - it doesn't seem an obvious fit.

We have, along with Adi, some very good players and I'd suggest that all we are really missing is a creative midfielder. We have a first 15/16 players that are good enough to go up once/if they start performing and gelling. It's about tactics and getting omre from what we have.

We are a third of the way through the season and I'd have thought that a coach who knows the Championship would be the man to build on what we have right now and go all out for promotion this year.

Hellberg feels as it were starting from scratch again, no matter how good he turns out to be. He will understandably need time and it feels as if it's a rebuild rather than building on what we have for an immediate strike at the top two come May.

I'm unsure too on what a 'technical coach' means if that is to be Adi's new role. A diminished one surely?

I wish we'd chosen differently and it feels like another upheaval is ahead. That said, clearly there wasn't a viable domestic option hence we're where we are but how thought through this appointment (yet TBC of course) is, I'm not so sure.

Gibbo gets it right and wrong with his appointments and I can't imagine there is anyone among us who'd envy him now.

Who'd be a multi millionaire?

I guess the pertinent question is would any of the alternatives that were being suggested, be a better option, especially with the Director of Football and Team Coach model probably not wanting to be disrupted? That would rule out Gerrard, Rogers et al who would bring significant support teams with them. All changes bring risks but with Adi helping out, I have grounds for optimism. UTB

Today afternoon will be the first media conference hold by Adi Viveash.  I am really looking forward to it as he seems a top guy. Let's see how much of information he will give to the press pre-match. I hope more than Michael Carrick did.

Also info if we have any new injuries and where we are with Dael Fry.

Up the Boro!

@rich-llewelyn-evans

I agree with much of that and yes it's a gamble based on Hellberg's record in Sweden - as we saw with Southampton. they brought in another hot young head coach in Will Still in the summer based on his good record in Belgium and France - he didn't hit the ground running and didn't adjust to the Championship and was ejected. Their interim manager has won his last 2 games and his team scored 5 goals - Still only won 2 from his first 13 and and averaged just a goal a game.

That's not to say Hellberg will struggle and perhaps the good thing for the players is having Adi Viveash still around. The question will be is whether his methods that worked in the Swedish league will easily translate to the grind of the Championship.

The key may well be on how or if he can get the attack functioning - though I suspect there's confidence issues with quite a few players that would be solved with them scoring a few goals. In his favour is that he's joining a team that is second in league so it's not a struggling team - it just needs a few tweaks to take us through these next ten games that will come pretty rapidly.

So was Hellberg the right choice? Unfortunately, I didn't see any other real standout choices that were available at this moment in time - if he gets off to a winning start it may look a good decision - if not we'll have to wait and see.

Regarding injuries, has anyone heard anyting about the injury to Darragh Leninhan?

Bob, can you make inquiries, please? I cannot even remember what his latest injury was and if he will be back in a few wwks, months or after the summer.

I suppose he won't be back before the January window and then Adilson Malanda will join the squad.

I will answer to my question on Darragh Leninhan's latest injury. He suffered a new Achilles injury, but Middlesbrough’s medical staff are hopeful the centre-half will be sidelined for a number of weeks rather than missing most of the rest of the season. That was in towards the end of September.

@jarkko - So Lenihan should be available for selection very soon? (Sidelined for a number of weeks in late September - we are now in late November so that's 8/9 of those weeks gone!).

Craig Johns is back.

I never thought I'd miss his mangled grammar, constant recycling of old quotes from earlier interviews / press conferences, and shameless pinching from other news sources. But he's human and he's ours.

The painful experience of the last few days on Teesside Live with the constant stream of AI-driven articles, regurgitating the same  stuff in increasingly bizarre combinations by journalists we've never heard of, if they really exist at all, has made me appreciate the remaining meagre diet that we still have left with our local press.

At what's usually a quiet time, but has on this occasion turned to be an extremely crucial time , thank goodness for Diasboro, where we've been able to turn for plenty of considered and intelligent views and opinions.

Listening to th press conference by ADI this afternoon Darragh was mentioned and it would appear he will be out for some time yet. He’s not even ready for training as he has had a few issues.

Pity as he’s a good player and leader

@original-fat-bob I did listen to the presser, too. It was two times longer than the pressers by Edwards (still remember him?).

Fabulous man, Adi Viveash.  A good listen.

So Edmundson and Leninhan out, but Fry could be involved. He will have a fitness test on Friday.  Let's hope Jones is back in time from Canada. He was MoM on his debut for the World Cup host country.

Life is good. Up the Boro!
