I’m just wondering in our ignorance if as children we were considered racist. I remember us all taking our toy pistols to the cinema matinees and shooting at the Red Indians on the screen, but never at the white cowboys. Seemed normal at the time, but doing my National Service in Changi, Singapore hopefully made me more tolerant with its mixture of Malays, Chinese, Black Indians, Eurasians and Europeans an eye opener. I don’t even notice the colour of people’s skins anymore, and those years helped me to be tolerant of my serviceman friends choice of football clubs as well. I think they must have been sick of hearing me spouting on about Brian Clough and the Boro, but when I nostalgically look at those photographs today I became supporters of their clubs too be they fans of Crystal Palace, Hull, Wrexham, Hibernian, Glentoran, Forest, Barnsley, Leeds, even Sunderland and Newcastle who were just as passionate about their clubs as I was of Boro. Yes we ribbed each other if their teams lost, but it was only banter. I still look out for their results next after Boro’s. I suspect as must Neil Warnock do for all the clubs he’s managed.
