Hands up those of you who thought that Nottm Forest beating Liverpool was the biggest shock throughout Europe this weekend. Well sometimes we scoff at ‘horses for courses’ as there’s no reasoning that past results should have any bearing on current form, but after all Liverpool have never beaten Forest in the Premier League and the Merseysiders have yet to win a league match away from  home this season.

Nevertheless on my European watch this weekend I have found two really surprising results. In the Netherlands, the university city of Groningen beat PSV Eindhoven one of the top three teams in the country 4-2, but the accolade of the weekend must surely go to VfL Bochum the Westphalian city in the Ruhr valley and bottom of the Bundesliga who beat top of the table Union Berlin 2-1 who only scored a consolation goal during added time. 

Not a surprise but in Portugal Benfica won away 1-0 in Porto to maintain their position as league leaders.
