Put very simply, I think too much of our recruitment over the years has been along the lines of, “We need a midfielder. Who were the best 3 in the league (or League One last summer) last year?”.

There needs to be a lot more thought into how a potential signing complements the players we already have and the type of football we play.

McNair and Saville, for instance, may well have been goalscoring midfielders for their previous clubs but coming into a side lacking pace and technical ability has meant they couldn’t replicate that form for us.

We can’t afford to cherry pick the better Championship players now and the ones from League One haven’t added much thus far, though admittedly they came into a difficult situation.

I would suggest we focus more on the types of players we need, rather than those who have done well at different types of clubs. We’re short of ball playing midfielders, intelligent players who move well, dominant centre halves and leaders. Look for those qualities more than the stats from last season.

What is truly amazing in this tight finish to the Championship season, is Brentford’s performances, winning every match since the restart.

Could they actually steal second place. I hope so. How we all wish MFC could emulate them.

Redcar Red,

Thanks for your usual high standard of report. A great pity that the football is so dire. It's a strange and weird end to the season, artificial in a way but sadly relegation won't be if it happens and I fear we will struggle with what we have in the division below.

Boro are a shambles in every respect I don't envy whoever has to sort it all out. Boro have the facilities now we just need a recruitment policy with a vision and a plan that the manager is involved in, a philosophy that everyone buys into, even the players, a team, and then the luxury topping would be some goals and seeing consistency. Oh I forgot, a ground with some atmosphere created by fans, when they come back, not an ear-bleed inducing PA system.

Any volunteers?

As always,

UTB,

John

@andy-r

We are the idiot club who sign the long service hero from the rock solid championship club. Not bad for a few matches, then the miles on the clock start to show, then his contract starts to show on our balance sheet.

Meanwhile, the player who replaced him, is being talked about as an England prospect and a big move, and only 22, and there you have it in a nutshell. No idea, no clue, and will never change, because they can't. Stuck in a time warp, frozen in time. Have had money, no idea how you use money as a weapon, but very Good at wasting it. Roberts I'm afraid is just a dribbler, could have  been the hero on Saturday, but could no more stop beating men and putting someone in on goal than I could fly to the moon. Us and all the other clubs who have fielded him are simply subsidising his wages to help Man.City with their finances, (they have a lot of young players like him)

Ask 60,000 Celtic supporters about Roberts, Plato. They would have him back ready for next season. He was a massive hit at Celtic but here at Boro he hasn't got that many good players around him.
