Yes that is essentially the 1976 crest with 18 replacing 19 - though speaking as a former graphic designer the overall spacing and size of the text and central image has been arranged much better and it will work well at a smaller size compared to the current crest.
Though part of my work as a designer was often quite political (in a small P sense) - as often the process was designed to get to a particular favoured design but with the need to convince a few key players. It feels like the process was maybe intended to go back to the 1976 badge but needed to get everyone on board - maybe it even ended up being tweaked to look familiar as that was often the case that for those who don't like change can always embrace nostalgia...

I wonder what Michael has been up to 🤔

Come on BORO.
Finally just catching up after only arriving at Teesside International Airport yesterday.
Clive, that was a "stonker" of a Headliner, especially with all the very funny agriculture lines.
I am not sure what to expect tonight, as our recent form has been rather poor and definately disappointing against Portsmouth.
I guess we will also be missing Morris and Hansen at the kick off, although the mystery man may be back.
Can the defence hold out against a a team finally finding its feet. More importantly can the Boro forwards find some kind of form and score some goals. I think we will need at least two to win tonight and break out of the blip???
So the game is on TV, MFC are saying the crowd is going to be over 28,000. Lets hope the Boro team can give them something to shout about in a positive way.
Team News - quite a few changes in what looks like it could be a back four unless Burgzorg is playing wing-back - though since Ayling is on the bench probably not. Browne partners Hackney in midfield with Morris on the bench (along with somebody called McGree) - plus Whittaker starts in what looks like predominantly players who weren't on international duty...

Scott Wilson seems to think it's going to be a flat back four:
Weird team selection with Ayling, outstanding this season, on the bench as we revert to a back four, and places found for serial under-performers, Whittaker and Burgzorg. Who will provide the creativity and ammunition for our strikers is the big question. Suspect that Sene, Ayling, Nypan, Hansen and even Morris may all get the call perhaps sooner rather than later.
Not feeling too optimistic at the moment. Come on Boro. And come on Whittaker and Burgzorg, prove me wrong.
Heart hopes 1-0, head says 0-2
It probably makes sense to switch to a back four given Boro now have a general shortage of central defenders and a plethora of attacking players - particularly given the lack of goals in recent games. It does seem a bit of a waste to play full-backs in central defence and losing width instead of trying to get more forwards on the pitch.
Let's see how it works out...
I suspect it's the players Edwards has had to train with for the last ten days or so - hopefully they've gelled together in the break!
Though I agree about Ayling - he's been our best player in most games - hopefully he isn't carrying a knock from training.
The Beeb's statistical overview of the match:
Tonight is the 69th league meeting between Middlesbrough and Ipswich Town with the first game played in Division Two back in August 1954 at Boro’s former home, Ayresome Park.
Ipswich hold the advantage, 29 wins to Middlesbrough’s 22 victories, with 17 draws.
- Ipswich could win successive league games at Middlesbrough for the first time, after winning 2-0 on their previous league visit in December 2023.
- Middlesbrough, who lost 1-0 last time out to Portsmouth, could lose successive league games for the first time since April, while they have not failed to score in three successive league matches since April 2022.
- Only Coventry City and Queens Park Rangers (both 11) have won more points in the Championship since the start of September than Ipswich (10), who have scored 13 goals across their past five games since a 1-0 defeat by Preston.
- Nine of Ipswich’s last 12 Championship goals have been scored by either Jack Clarke (4) or Jaden Philogene (5). Clarke has found the net in four of his past five games, with three of those coming as a substitute.
I managed to get to The Seafood Shack at Ullapool for lunch today, after all, as the weather yesterday was grim but today it was sunny. It was worth the wait but a good job I didn't wait until Saturday as I found out the Shack closes for the season on Friday (tomorrow!).
Keep the faith, Boro supporters. A win would mean so much. It would be a real statement!
This is going to be a tough game. The Ipswich bench is a concern. Akpom and Clarke to come on after an hour. Maybe RE has set up our bench to match theirs.
UTB
I'm sorry but Whittaker practically is making a mistake with every touch - not good enough!
Strelec misses a sitter in the 37th minute, then Brittain gives away a penalty & is booked for it five minutes later which Brynn saves! 🙂
First penalty conceded since April 2024 v Leeds. Ipswich have only scored two away goals this season both pens. Sol saved this one then Boro score an OG
Then a Kipré OG gives Boro the lead in injury time!
Well that was an exciting frantic last 20 minutes that had everything - glaring miss, great save then soft penalty, saved penalty and then soft own goal - phew I need a HT rest!
What a game. What speed. Entertaining. And a good score. Up the Borol
Then a Kipré OG gives Boro the lead in injury time!
From the Beeb's live text commentary:
Wow...
Delano Burgzorg slides a low cross in and somehow Cédric Kipré guides it past his own goalkeeper.
These last 10 minutes have been carnage!
CJ's verdict on the first half:
Some half of football that. Was just thinking how is this still 0-0 when Boro took the lead. Both sides had chances. Boro not clinical enough. Brynn to thank at the other end for saving the penalty. Something to protect now.
Well....Brynn saves a penalty then Boro scores an OG to take the lead at HT. Get in!
First 35 minutes uneventful. Boro had no cohesion, looked as players hadn’t played together, poor passing, no creativity and then it all happened.
Boro had chances - Conway should score, Strelec likewise. At the other end Ipswich had chances, good clearance by Fry off the line, then a bit of a soft penalty and Boro have a new hero.
Just as I’m settling for 0-0 and Boro get a lucky own goal.
i will settle for 1-0 and to achieve a win the substitutes need to make an impact.
philip of Huddersfield 👍
Birdsong ! And Whittaker need to be subbed !
Brynn MOM so far
OFB
I think Whittaker should stay on a bit longer 😉
What do we know? Whittaker with his first goal in 25 games makes it 2-0 early in the second half! Yippee!
Whittaker, of all people, makes it 2-0 in the 55th minute - CJ:
Nice ball from Browne into Whittaker. He slips Strelec in behind wide. Nice ball low across goal from him and Palmer can only palm it [to] Whittaker, who fires home. He and his team-mates look elated!
I don't want to be presumptous but I feel a song coming on. What are the words now...?
