@andy-r - Good to hear that you were there, too.  I can't now remember who the others were.  A lot of water has flowed under the bridge since then. Maybe some on here will put their "I was there" hands up?

I DO remember SG comparing Boro, its gate money income etc with Spurs* when I thought that Swansea might have been a better comparison.  To be fair to the serial bottlers that Spurs have become, threatening to win things but never quite managing to get over the line, they have at least lived all their living memory in the top tier and even now (when we really KNOW they'll fail to deliver) they start off every season hoping to win a cup and, if they don't now believe they will win the league, they hope to qualify for Europe, even in the top four!  They are a Premier League version of Boro.  They hope to end within the Premier League top 6 to secure European football whilst Boro hopes to finish within the Championship top six to take part in the play-offs, but perhaps achieving less relative success most years than Spurs.  Tottenham in recent decades has been the original "could have been a contender" club, usually ending up with a broken nose.

  * To be fair to SG he was comparing the gate receipts and commercial income of a club like Spurs, and their success, with the income of a team like Boro.  I thought that Swansea, at that time a Premier Club playing exciting football, but on a much smaller income and crowds, was a more apt comparison.

@forever-dormo

That meeting with Gibson and Bauser took place on the evening of 4 April 2013 and I was there and remember talking to you - I was with CarltonP and also remember Andy was there - as was Paulista Park and Smog-on-the-Tyne. Certainly seems a long time ago now (it was) but I guess nothing much has changed since then.

The discussion was about how the club could gain promotion back to the PL and compete with the big clubs financially - on the pitch Mogga was in charge but the team was on a bad run after being well positioned in 4th just 3 points off second spot at the half-way point of the season. Sadly Mogga's team was on one of those bad runs that saw them pick up only 18 points from their last 23 games as they ended up finishing 16th.

Mogga was sacked the following season after 12 games following that 3-2 defeat at Barnsley with Aitor Karanka being installed as his successor.

Eleven and a half years ago..!  Swansea are now back with us in The Championship and Spurs remain in the Premier League but now with a world class stadium.

It's been a matter of great regret to me that I was abroad when the Gibson meeting took place.

I was invited but couldn't make it.

What I was particularly sorry about was missing the chance to meet so many other splendid contributors to the blog.

Perhaps some time soon
