I am already at home after that win.  Chicken tikka samosa consumed with a couple of mugs of tea.

What a cracking way to spend an afternoon! After the first 6-7 minutes during which PNE had either 4 or 5 corners, and when their press/pressure on our players was obvious, fast and threatening, Boro moved into another gear and stormed away with the game. Nobody had even an average game from the Boro point of view and I'd pick out for particular mention, Hackney, Fry and Ayling amongst those who played really well.  Conway's two goals could easily have been four!  The floodgates have been blown wide open!

It was already 3-0 to Boro when PNE's red card was shown, so that extra man advantage wasn't the reason behind Boro's dominant performance. I'd go so far to that say if the final score had been 6-0 then that would not have flattered our team. Good confident football played by a team which looks to have the ability to go on from here to achieve the promotion that has been beyond us for what seems like a lifetime.  It won't be easy as Coventry and Ipswich are clearly very decent teams, but on any analysis Boro is definitely in the automatic promotion shake-up. This isn't a fluke.  Boro hasn't just chanced upon a few good results.

On the walk back to our cars my mate said to me that for the first time in ages it looks as though Boro has the players, the quality on the Bench, and the management/coaching back-up to complete the job.  I suspect the manager might just be our own "Special One".  But I won't hear any talk of a Swedish Cloughie until Boro has played in the Premier League and gone on to cement its position in that league. Feet firmly on the ground (at present!).

The sun was even shining on the walk back to the car. And even though the forecast isn't great for the next week or so (maybe the storm for which New York is bracing itself, will make its way over  here in due course) I now have a warm glow inside. It's not down to an early monring portion of Ready Brek. #UTB.

This was probably Boro’s easiest game this season. Will they get an easier game ?  Preston were awful and Boro, could and should, have scored twice as many goals.

However , you can only beat the team in front of you and Boro did that easily. What I liked most was the style of passing the ball forward, moving the ball quickly and the speed Boro won the ball back- they hunted in packs in winning the ball.

Quite a few pluses- Conway scoring 2 goals, Fry getting 90 minutes under his belt, Castledine likewise, McGree getting back on the pitch and plenty of subs getting a decent run out.

Despite the poorness of Preston  who helped by playing with 10 men for 40 minutes Boro looked a good team and strolled to victory.

They can rightly be called the form team.

A good summary of KH's pragmatism - in his own words:

Pity about CJ's description of the first-half performance as "empathic"!

KIM HELLBERG admitted it was “fun” to watch his Middlesbrough side’s vibrant attacking play during their 4-0 thrashing of Preston at the Riverside.

Hellberg’s Boro side ran riot as they claimed their second successive 4-0 home win, scoring three goals before the break through Alan Browne, Tommy Conway and Morgan Whittaker.

Conway added his second goal of the game after the break as Boro fired in 16 shots, eight of which were on target, over the course of the afternoon.

Preston’s defence couldn’t cope with the pace and directness of the Boro attack, with the home side’s vibrancy in the final third impressing their head coach.

“Preston are a very aggressive, man-to-man team, which means you need to try to use different spaces,” said Hellberg. “Some teams get lower down the pitch, defending with more players, and you have to do things a bit differently.

“In general though, of course this is the way we want to play in terms of using the space they give us. With this game, it was about trying to get in behind them, and we did it very well.

“The combinations the players played with were unbelievable. We were trying to get the ball all the time and play fluid, quick football. Then, when we had time, we used it well.

Player Ratings: The Boro player who 'banished talk about him' - and who is at the 'top of his form'

“I’m very proud of the way we played because it’s a very tough opponent to play against. It’s a very good defensive team who are brave in their approach to the game, so to get this type of quality from our players was brilliant.

“It was fun to watch us play, always trying to be dangerous running in behind and with a lot of energy from all the players up front.”

Boro’s victory capped an excellent eight days that also saw them claim away victories at West Brom and Stoke City.

The Teessiders had to dig deep in both of those games, but against Preston, they were able to cut loose and showcase their attacking skills.

“It was good,” continued Hellberg. “It was a top performance, everything we talked about before the game in terms of using the energy together. We did that in a brilliant way, and I was so impressed by the players, how they put this performance in after such a tough week with such long travel, coming home in the middle of the night.

“To put that type of energy and performance out, against such a good team, that is top. All credit to the players for an unbelievable performance.”

@forever-dormo Pity than Ken is not among us now. He would have liked this season.

Secondly, I would have asked him when we have won two SUCCESSIVE home matches by FOUR goal marging and a clean sheet, too. Not often I think.

So on average we have scored 3,25 goals (13) in our last four league matches. Impressive.

Up the Boro!

Got worried when Ipswich got back to 2-1 with 30 minutes to play but thankfully Bamford scored a 3rd for the Blades but then got himself sent off after picking up a second yellow for diving!

The Blades 2-0 against the Tractor Boys at half-time...

Finished 3-1!  😆  The Tractor Boys had reduced the deficit through a Clarke penalty in the 60th minute, but none other than Paddy Bam Bam restored the two-goal advantage a few minutes later, only to be sent off for a second yellow in the 84th minute!

Well you got it right with the early(ish) goal although with their 3 and only corners in the first few minutes long with the way they pressed, I was slightly concerned that my prediction of a tight game was going to come back and haunt me!

I needed have worried as from then on, we were in charge - can’t remember the last time I saw 3 first half goals from my position in the North stand and it really should have been 4 or 5.

After the fourth goal, it did appear to go a bit flat although it was more a case of game management and I thought that even the crowd were slightly subdued for a while.

It was a pleasant walk back to the car and drive home, especially as the score updates from Bramell Lane were even better - a decent cushion although I mustn’t  get too complacent - I have Ben watching Boro for too many years for that to happen.

The BBD contingent had a very jolly day out and  I will be celebrating with oudles of ginger beer tonight.

Good to see TC score 2 goals and confidence restored - now a week off to recover and  hopefully the injured members of the gang will be fit and raring to go again next week.

Days like today make it fantastic to be a Boro supporter!

@stircrazy - If it is a comment on his ability to hit the wrong keys, I empathise with CJ.  I do it frequently and sometimes I don't spot it until after I have pressed "send".  But Boro's win today was the very definition of an emphatic performance. No half measures but a real stuffing.

As you can tell from my earlier post just after 4pm.  MORNING bowl of Ready Brek was intended ...(!!).

I don't do this sort of stuff by accident, chaps. It is all meticulously planned.  (Cough, cough!).

I'm glad that Boro Becky, plus her father and other family member enjoyed their outing this lunchtime.  Perhaps a repetition of the outing may give a repeat performance next time?

Interesting comparison to last season where Boro also played Preston at game 29 - albeit away and lost 2-1. This left Boro in 6th place on 44 points, 11 fewer than this season. Indeed, they then lost the next 4 games after that to drop to 11th place.

Leeds were at this point top on 60 points, followed by Sheff Utd on 58 (though had a 2 pt deduction), Fulham on 57 and Sunderland on 55 points. So Boro are pretty much on par with the teams who won promotion last season - plus but for that christmas results blip they could've been on 60 points now with better finishing.

Norwich will be another big game next week - though unfortunately Ipswich are at home to Preston...

@werdermouth I think you meant Burnley and not Fulham?

This season we have averaged 1.9 points per match. So we still need to improve to reach the target of 2.0 points per game.

But at least the performances are looking very good and we do score goals.

Up the Boro!

PS. I plan to wait until after Monday before I post mt preview of the Norwich match. The Canaries are at home to Coventry on the evening of Monday. I might even watch it as it can be seen on ViaPlay over here in the Nordics.

Some very good posts and very pleased for those who travelled from further afield. I did not fly in from Spain on this occasion. 🤣🤣

Driving back from the game, I was listening to TC being interviewed, he was very good. However one thing he did say about the short turnaround from successive games and the travelling was:

He got home at 3am after the Stoke game, all by bus on the day. Thursday they were in at Rockcliffe. Amazing. He also said, that the short turnarounds and travel are no excuse for a poor performance.

You’ve all written eloquently about Boro’s superb performance today, so I won’t add much. I absolutely loved the fluidity and pace with which we played the game. We’re used to Tommy running everywhere but today Whittaker followed suit and was therefore very difficult to pick up. Preston had no answers to our movement.

I greatly enjoyed the whole team effort to win the ball back once it was lost, ‘hunting in packs,’ as Philip said. This was quite magnificent. It also meant that our press of PNE’s defenders and keeper was highly effective, more so than I have ever seen from Boro. And this, of course, resulted directly in our third goal, with Whittaker brilliantly challenging for and winning the ball on the edge of the area before finishing calmly.

Finally, I said beforehand that I was expecting a tough game against a resolute defence. This was anything but. Preston were woeful all over the pitch, and especially in defence. Boro, meanwhile, were fantastic and took them apart at will for 60 minutes. All credit to KH for putting in place an inventive and fluid formation that allowed us to use all our many talents to the full.

A few of us before the game thought the teamsheet looked good on paper.

I wasn’t expecting it to be a back three with Browne at wingback mind.

It worked very well though and I just hope we can keep Dael Fry fit, though a returning Alfie Jones would also be a big bonus for further competition if not starting.

The same goes for Brittain but it’s quite a tough choice between him and Browne with the way AB has played of late.

Castledine did quite well I thought and could be a good addition for the future but now, in the way we played yesterday, I think he’s a placeholder for McGree, who I think would make this team considerably better again if and when fully fit. McGree - fitness record aside - is one of only three players on our books who I’m fairly confident could compete at Premier League level along with Hackney and possibly Malanda. There may be others who could develop or step up to the challenge but they are the only three for whom I’m reasonably certain (and even Malanda has only been here a month).

There’s no getting away from how poor Preston were yesterday but nevertheless it does feel like, when we have a scoring forward, the squad is very well put together and Hellberg deserves a huge amount of credit for the way he is coaching, motivating and setting them up. To my mind, a vast improvement on Edwards’ overly cautious approach.

I really think we’ve got a good ‘un in KH, which is also a (rare) shout out for Kieron Scott and his team.

What surprised me, was that Heckingbottom did not change the shape of PNE either during the first half or even later at HT.

Boro really exploited the 3 at the back with so much space for our wider players especially AB.

I love KH's flexibility of shape to suit either the opposition or his available squad.

NE

MIDDLESBROUGH claimed a 4-0 victory for the second home game in a row as they thrashed Preston at the Riverside.

Alan Browne, Tommy Conway and Morgan Whittaker scored as the Teessiders completely dominated the first half.

Preston were reduced to ten men when Jordan Storey was sent off for a professional foul at the start of the second half, and Conway completed the scoring with his second goal of the game in the 54th minute.

What were the main talking points from Boro’s latest success?

RAMPANT BORO

What a week it has been for Boro. The wins at West Brom and Stoke were excellent results, enabling the Teessiders to remain in the automatic-promotion positions. Could they follow their away triumphs up with a home win over Preston? The answer was an emphatic yes.

Admittedly, Preston were awful. They played into Boro’s hands by trying to press aggressively high up the pitch in the first half, a ploy that left huge gaps for their hosts to exploit as a result. They also had to play almost all of the second half with ten men after Jordan Storey was sent off for pulling back Conway after the Boro striker had tackled him and was about to break clear.

Boro still had to get the job done though, and the quality of their attacking play in particular was a joy to behold. This was ‘Hellball’ in full effect, with Boro’s midfielders breaking forward with purpose at every opportunity and the pace and fluidity of the home side’s forwards proving too much for Preston’s defenders to be able to handle.

Since Kim Hellberg’s arrival, Boro have won four, failed to score in their next four, then won four more on the spin, with their latest run having taken them to within three points of leaders Coventry City, who head to an in-form Norwich City on Monday, and opened up a five-point gap to Ipswich Town, who face Sheffield United at Bramall Lane this afternoon. The battle for automatic promotion is well and truly on.

SUPER TOMMY CONWAY

Just like London buses. Prior to Wednesday’s game at Stoke City, Conway had gone 24 matches without scoring from open play. Yes, the striker was still providing plenty in terms of energy, effort and closing down the opposition, but his lack of goals was an undoubted concern.

The drought was broken at the bet365 Stadium in midweek, and with a burden seemingly having been lifted from his shoulders, Conway duly made it three goals in the space of four days this afternoon.

His first goal owed plenty to a wonderful curved through ball from Luke Ayling, but Conway’s run behind the Preston defence was the type of break he was not necessarily making when his confidence appeared to have been drained.

His powerful low finish flew through the legs of goalkeeper Jack Walton, doubling Boro’s lead after Browne had produced a similar finish to open the scoring in the ninth minute.

His second of the afternoon came nine minutes after the break and was a classic poacher’s goal, with Conway stabbing home the rebound after Walton pushed Leo Castledine’s free-kick into his path.

At various stages this month, with David Strelec and Kaly Sene injured and Conway seemingly out of form, it has been argued that Boro would have to sign a striker this month to keep their promotion push on track.

They might still do that, but if they don’t, Conway has shown he is more than capable of spearheading their attempts to make it to the Premier League.

BRILLIANT BROWNE

Of all of Boro’s summer signings, the arrival of Browne on a season-long loan from Sunderland was one of the least heralded pieces of business. Increasingly, though, it looks like being one of the most important.

Browne has been superb for Boro, slotting into a variety of different positions to plug gaps and always delivering whatever has been asked of him.

He’d been playing at right-back for most of the last month, deputising for Callum Brittain, but yesterday, with Ayling moved across to the full-back berth, he was pushed forward into a right-midfield role, with Hellberg switching to a 4-3-3 formation.

It is safe to say he enjoyed himself against his former employers. His ninth-minute goal, which saw him brush aside Jamal Lewis to reach a superb curled cross from Matt Targett, was his third in the last five matches, and he should really have added another midway through the first half when he turned neatly in the box, only to stroke a low shot wide of the post.

Could Boro look to make Browne’s loan move permanent this month? The answer is that they probably don’t want to. If they don’t get promoted, they’ll almost certainly look to sign him up full-time in the summer. If they do, they’ll almost certainly find themselves shopping in a very different market in the next transfer window.

SQUAD DEPTH

With Adilson Malanda strolling through today’s game at centre-half, and Castledine performing impressively in a wide-attacking role on the left as he made his first Boro start, the quality of the Teessiders’ recent transfer work was evident.

Fin Munroe, who made his Boro debut as a late replacement for Malanda, is ready to offer an alternative option at left-back if needed, and Boro remain on track to complete the £3.2m signing of Jeremy Sarmiento from Brighton in the next few days.

This is a squad that looks more than deep enough to sustain a promotion push, especially when you factor in the first-team players who are returning from injury.

Riley McGree was a second-half substitute this afternoon, Callum Brittain was also back in the bench, and both Strelec and Sene could be available when Boro return to action against Norwich next weekend. Whatever happens in the remainder of the season, Hellberg cannot complain about the quality and depth of the playing resources at his disposal.

Well that was much easier than I thought it would be and probably one of the most dominant and controlled performances in years and we didn’t seem to get out of second gear!

We have often dominated possession but not always been in full control of a game but that issue was addressed superbly yesterday.

I posted after Milanda’s debut that if we could get a fully fit Fry playing like he did a few seasons ago then we would have the best CB pairing in the division; shades of Boam/Maddren, Mowbray/Pallister and Pearson/Festa and AM and DF looked yesterday as if they had been playing together for years.

It was hard to pick a MoTM as there were so many very good performances and the really encouraging thing was that the substitutes all did a job and didn’t let the side down.

With the defence looking stronger and stronger by the week and with plenty of options in midfield and up front, as those returning from injury get up to speed, then the future is bright; it is going to take a very good side to outplay us and there aren’t many of those in this league.

I am hoping that when we go to Coventry we come away with all three points as I believe that this side is capable of doing so. 😎

@k-p-in-spain I am with you re our visit to Coventry in a few weeks time. We dominated against them at the Riverside, but with a make shift defence we succumbed to what has been the most prolific strike force to date. We have improved further since then and with a much more recognisable defence deployed We should go into that game full of confidence and well capable of coming away with 3 points.

For now, let us hope Norwich can do us a favour on Monday evening.

Just noticed that Ipswich have signed Mehmeti from Bristol City.

Whilst we could have afforded the transfer fee, (3.2 mill) apparently the same as Sarmiento is going to cost us, I doubt we could afford to match the wages.

A good buy though. Maybe City would be prepared to offer a little more for Burgzorg. 😀

A very belated thank you to Martin for so cleverly evoking that parallel Enid Blyton universe that many of us probably imagine ourselves having inhabited when we were kids. A worthy follow-up to The Night After Xmas.

Of the many things that I enjoyed watching yesterday, one of the best ones was seeing the way that Malanda dealt with any ball in the air that came his way. It's always great to have a tall presence who can fend off the aerial attack, but he very rarely just launched it back upfield. Almost invariably he was able to just dink it down to a fellow defender and put them in a position to start another attack. A rare quality, I reckon.

It was interesting hearing Tommy Conway talking about KH's half time approach. He mentioned to that KH shows them a few clips of what they're doing wrong. I hadn't realised that that happened mid-match. I suppose that's one of the benefits of having a team of three assistant coaches who can bring that sort of technology and attention together and make it count.

It all helps to reinforce confidence that KH has gears to go through to improve the team yet more. As others have said, I find myself positively looking forward to Coventry away.

@clive-hurren

I agree 100% with your appraisal of the game.  It was a terrific performance and while it might be inappropriate to carp I have one little reservation.  I wish we could start all matches full on rather than take 5 to 10 minutes to get going.  We could have been behind yesterday after 10 minutes and while we would have beaten Preston anyway once we took control of the game it could be different against a better team.
