Exmil Challenge 2017-18

Despite “We are doomed Mr Wainwaring, we are doomed” the “Boro Army” are still in with a chance of making the playoffs and another trip to Wembley. So it is time for the “Exmil Challenge 2018”.

The challenge will be 3 parts each consisting of 4 matches per team, the first part will take us up to the international break. The amount of teams may vary each part as teams fall away and other teams may have a late surge towards the top 6. For the first part I have selected the top 10 teams in the league, next to each teams name, in brackets, is the number of points they have as of today.

The format is the same as previous years, in that each entry will have to predict what each listed team will have at the end of each Part. If you predict the correct amount of points for a particular team, you will score 10 points but for every point + or -, you will lose a point. As an example if you predict Team A will have 70 points but they actually achieve 68 points you will score 8 points for that team, the same as if Team A actually achieves 72 points. Totaling the points you score for all teams will determine your position in the Exmil Challenge 2018 league and the points you score in Part 1 will carry forward into Part 2 then your total will carry forward into Part 3, at the end of which we will have our final placings and overall winner.

As you are all aware Werdermouth is extremely busy with everything he produces for Diasboro so we will revert back to being steam driven by myself. Listed below are the first set of fixtures for the 10 teams and to make it easy to post your entry all you have to post is each team followed either W D L for each fixture, then the number of points the team will have accumulated at the end of those fixtures. For example Wolves start with 73 points and if you think they will win all 4 fixtures you post:

Wolves WWWW (85)

Then the same for all 10 teams in part 1.

Once I record your entry I will reply with a simple “recorded” and you will know I have entered you in the challenge. Your entry must be posted on Diasboro by 1945 hrs on Friday 2 March when Boro v Leeds kicks off. Also be aware that Shef Utd have an outstanding fixture away at Reading on Tuesday night and that is why their present points (52) has a ? next to it, therefore I would not expect any entry to be posted before the result is known of that match. At the end of each part I will post the league positions for everyone.

Good luck to everyone and the BORO.

  4. I have deleted Shef Utd v Reading because it will put you at a disadvantage as if they win or lose your total in Part 1 will be wrong. I will total your entry after tonight’s match so we will all be on a level playing field. Recorded.

  5. OFB I have amended your Villa total to 73 as you have Bolton (A) as a W but only put 1 point, if I am wrong and you meant to put it as D let me know please.

  20. EXMIL CHALLENGE 2018

Whilst formulating the league table at the end of Part 1, I have noticed errors in two entries:

werdermouth – You have predicted Cardiff v Derby as both teams to lose, although we would all like that to happen I would like to know your prediction for that fixture.

Martin Bellamy – 2 errors, Cardiff to Draw v Derby but Derby to win ? also Brentford to win v Boro but Boro to draw ?

Cardiff v Derby is still to be played so I would like the amendment as soon as possible.

Martin, I trust the integrity of everyone on this site and it is a fun competition so I will except what you meant as your prediction for Brentford v Boro but I need to know before I can complete the league table for Part 1.

As Derby v Cardiff was “snowed off” I will carry forward the prediction everyone made for that match and produce an amended table for Part 1 after the rearranged match has been played, providing it is not called off by Derby FC because of snow, fog, rain or it is too hot in the sun.

Later I will post the fixtures for Part 2 and it will be no surprise to find tha Brentford have dropped out of the top ten (contenders for the top 6) to be replaced by Millwall. The main question will be, how many and which teams will still be in with a chance of the top 6 after Part 2.

  21. EXMIL CHALLENGE 2018

Due to the rearranged fixture Derby v Cardiff being so late in the season (Part 3 of the challenge) and the possibilities of loss of form, injuries and suspensions I have decided to delete the fixture from Part 1 and adjust everyone’ final total for those two teams. The fixture will now appear in Part 3, I think this is the fairest way to proceed.

I hope to post Part 2 and the league table later today or tomorrow at the latest, both on here and copied to the Exmil Challenge banner.

    Come on BORO.

  22. EXMIL CHALLENGE 2018
    League Table after Part 1

I will remind everyone that I have deleted the Derby v Cardiff fixture from everyone’s prediction. The numbers after your name are the scores achieved for each team in the following order, Wolves,Cardiff,Fulham,Villa,Derby,Boro,Bristol City,Preston, Shef Utd and Brentford. After seeing my position in the league I decided to check everyone’s score three times but that does not mean I have not made an error, so please, if you think there is a mistake in your scores, let me know.

    17. Andy R 8,8,7,3,9,6,8,9,10,7 = 75
    18. Ken Smith 8,7,10,8,9,7,9,4,8,4 = 74

If two or more had the same number of points, I have placed them in the order of who had the most 10s, 9s, 8s etc.

As can be seen “yours truly” and Forever Dormo are holding the automatic places, whilst borobrie,Redcar Red, jarkko and selwynoz are in the playoffs. Meanwhile Ken Smith, Andy R and werdermouth are fighting for survival. The scoring has been “remarkable Jeff” with the lowest score achieving 74% with Parts 2 & 3 to go, everyone is still in the chase for the title.

    Come on BORO.

      1. Thank you, Exmil. But my silver medal position means that I have been required to take a urine test for analysis. I have had three pots of tea so far, but it’s difficult to produce when “Ludmilla” is watching. She and Jarmila Kratochvilova used to hold ploughing competitions during the athletics close season, those happy decades ago.

Thanks for keeping this going and well done for topping part 1, but this is a game of three halves (;-)), so to speak so it will be interesting to see if the current pace setters at the top of the board will hold their nerve and their form going forward. Or will one or more of us middling players put together a run worthy of challenging at the top.
Well here’s my finger in the air predictions for this phase:

  38. First camp of the season for the Easter weekend, starting early tomorrow so we can set up early and still get back for the Boro game against Wolves, before returning to camp for the evening fun and frivolities. Leyburn it is. Can’t wait.

However, as to Exmil Part 2, I am now in fear after a really good first part. Here goes, then:

    Wolves – L, W, L, D – 86
    Cardiff – W, W, W, L – 85
    Fulham – W, W, D, W – 79

Making it a little interesting at the top………

  39. Thanks for the reminder Exmil, plus happy birthday too – I’ve just managed to boot up my laptop and get internet connection since Wednesday morning and have used the usual scientific method to make my predictions for Part II 🙂

  40. ExMill, here is my late entry after a few days abroad on business.
    Wolves L W D L 86
    Cardiff W L D L 80
    Fulham D W L W 76
    A Villa D W D W 77
    Derby W L W W 71

    Bristol C D W D W 69
    Preston D W D W 68
    Sheff U D W D D 66

SO we are still in the play-off. And as you know I am not very optimistic Boro fan …

    Up the Boro!

  41. EXMIL CHALLENGE Part 3

I know there is one match of Part 2 to be played and that is why Wolves and Derby have a permutation of three starting points in brackets but since predictions have to be posted by 1945 hrs on Friday 13th when Villa kick off against Leeds, I thought I would give everyone an extra day to contemplate their decisions.

Note that Derby and Cardiff have an extra fixture to be played unfortunately it is after Boro play Derby. I will be posting the league table this week, in which I do not expect to be sitting at the top anymore after a disastrous Part 2 for Boro.

    1. Hi, problems with your entry Millwall v Fulham as you have Millwall D and Fulham L, Cardiff only 4 predictions, Derby points total does not match predictions, therefore not recorded.

      1. Thanks. Now not sure if our goal difference will be good enough. Terrible second results see me slipping towards relegation. Over optimism for a Boro didn’t help.

  51. Hi Exmil

Thanks for keeping me straight and for me getting it wrong first time. I didn’t have much time yesterday and grabbed your first list of fixtures with the options for Wolves and Derby and didn’t read subsequent posts that definitely said Wolves had 92 points after beating Derby, bot 91 ! As for the mix results for the SheffUvMillwall, well I was just not careful enough when copying my entries…..tut, tut.

Anyways here is what I meant to post yesterday!!

    Wolves WDWL ( 99 )
    Fulham WDWD ( 89 )
    Cardiff LWDLW ( 87 )
    A Villa WDWL ( 83 )
    Derby WDDLW ( 76 )

  52. Oh dear it truly is the hope that gets you. Boro to leave us fans hanging on until the Ipswich game when it goes down to goal difference between us and Millwall…

    Wolves (92) WWDL (99)
    Fulham (81) WDWD (89)
    Cardiff (80) DWDWW (91)

    SHEFF U DWWL (72)

    BRENTFORD (LDWW) (71)

    PRESTON DDLW (67)

Thanks again. The Challenge is making a very tight finish even more interesting. I have us missing out by just one point, with our failure to produce enough fire-power to get us a necessary win at Ipswich proving to be our downfall.

  54. Thanks Exmil and well done for keeping the top spot! – though glad to see I’ve edged into the top half of the table but only an outside chance of making the play-off’s after my consistently average performance of 76 and 77 points.

Anyway, here are my Part 3 predictions with Boro surprisingly in 5th and joined by Derby in 6th with Millwall missing out…

    Wolves (91) DWWL – 98
    Fulham (81) WWWD – 91
    Cardiff (80) DDDWD – 87
    Aston Villa (76) WLDL – 80

    Bristol City (65) LWDD – 70
    Shef Utd (65) WDWD – 73
    Brentford (64) LWLD – 68
    Preston (63) DLLW – 67

  55. Thank you Exmil for your time and effort with this. Here are my guess from the not so sunny south.
    WOLVES WDWW =101
    FULHAM WDWW = 91
    CARDIFF DWDDW = 89
    VILLA WDWL = 83
    DERBY WWDLW = 78

    BRISTOL LWDW = 72

    BRENTFORD LWDD = 69
    PRESTON LDLW = 67

    HOPEFULLY NO MISTAKES

      1. Apologies Exmil. I did say hopefully no mistakes, so only one….not too bad.

Thank you for amending Wolves. Does not make too much difference as they are home and dry.

When you think back 8/9 months, Mr Gibson was expecting is to be in that position. He must be gutted.

  56. Love the optimism from the blog with regards to the Boro. Apologies from myself and KP for our pessimistic out look. Or should that be realistic?

    10. Andy R (75). 7,10,8,8,10,4,9,5,10,6 = 77 = 152
    11. Martin Bellamy (77). 7,6,8,8,9,6,7,5,9,8. = 73 = 150
    12. lenmasterman (78). 9,7,5,8,7,10,6,8,8,3. = 71 = 149
    13. Suffolk’n’Boro (79). 7,7,6,7,9,5,4,7,8,10. = 70 = 149
    14. selwynoz (83). 7,6,6,8,6,4,8,3,10,8. = 66 = 149
    15. Ken Smith (74). 7,7,6,7,9,8,7,5,9,10. = 75 = 149
    16. jarkko (83). 4,10,5,9,7,4,6,5,9,5. = 64 = 147
    17. Forever Dormo (84). 4,5,8,7,8,2,5,8,8,6 = 61 = 145
    18. Powmill-Naemore (78). 7,10,3,10,8,2,7,6,8,5 = 66 = 144

I am shocked at still being at the top after my Boro predictions were so poor but as can be seen, there has been a lot of movement (not just in the MFC toilets) in the league. Pedro de Espana is occupying the second automatic promotion spot, whilst MW in Darwin, borobrie, originalfatbob and KP in Spain are in the playoff places, meanwhile jarkko, Forever Dormo and Powmill-Naemore are fighting to avoid the drop.

As usual if the totals were equal I placed them in order of who had the most 10’s/9’s/8’s etc over the two legs, if anyone thinks I have made an error, please post their concern and I will recheck my calculations.

Entries for Part 3 must be posted by 1945 hrs tonight, good luck to everyone, especially the Boro.

    Come on BORO.

    1. Sorry, exmil 2017. My failure to put in predictions for the last leg of the competition has nothing to do with my spitting out the dummy after a really good first part (2nd I believe) was followed by a catastrophic second part which leaves me, as I now see, second from the bottom.

Oh, no! Blame BT. No internet since 2nd April. This cobbled together connection is made by piggy-backing from a mobile phone not far away, and using its variable 3G and 4G mobile signal as a local hotspot for other equipment like this laptop. However, since I had to wait until son-and-heir showed me how to do this when he returned from Jesmond (the shame!), I had missed the relevant submission date.

I will sit at the sideline knowing that “I cudda been a contender” but will still look forward with interest at the outcome.

On other news, a third engineer is calling out on Wednesday, and the lady at BT is confident, THIS time it will work. No fault with the phone live (engineer one) nor with the router (they sent a new one) nor with the internet connections in the house (second engineer) so it looks like an outside fault. Fingers crossed……

Not seen the blog for a while, despite a tweet from Jarkko about the @camsell59 In2Views…………….. I have been looking forward to seeing that.

  58. EXMIL CHALLENGE 2018 FINAL TABLE

Thanks to everyone who took part, the final placing are below with some very high scores in the last part. Apologies if I have made errors but I didn’t get to bed until 0330 hrs this morning due to an hour delay at the airport on departure, please raise any mistake that you think I have made. If a number final scores were the same, I counted 10’s, 9’s, 8’s etc over the 3 parts until I was able to separate them.

I will say, at this point, over the last two weeks I have had the pleasure to meet Ian Gill and his good lady and we enjoyed a few glasses of refreshment while we discussed the Boro among other things. I certainly hope to enjoy their company again.

Congratulations to myself (shock, horror) at being this years champion and borobrie on securing the second automatic promotion spot. Still to fight on in the playoffs are Redcar Red, originalfatbob, selwynoz and Ian Gill for the last promotion place. When I have had a nights sleep, I will post the format and rules for the playoffs, so if anyone thinks I have made an error, please let me know soonest.

Congratulations also to Powmill-Naemore, who with the highest score of Part 3, moved from the bottom of the league into the top half. I wonder if our 3 relegated teams, Forever Dormo, jarkko and Andy R will ponder where they may have finished if they had got their Part 3 entries in before the deadline but I do understand about internet provider problems as when I switched to BT from Sky, I had delay after delay from BT but they did give me £30 off my first bill as a goodwill gesture (hint hint).

  59. EXMIL CHALLENGE 2018 – THE PLAYOFFS

This seasons playoffs will see the following semi finals:

    Redcar Red v Ian Gill

    originalfatbob v selwynoz

Each player will have to predict the correct score, at full time (including extra time) for each of the following matches:

    Fri 11/5 1945 Derby v Fulham

    Sat 12/5 1715 Boro v Villa

    Mon 14/5 1945 Fulham v Derby

    Tue 15/5 1945 Villa v Boro

    Penalty shootouts do not count.

Each player will score 5 points for the correct amount of goals per team, per match but will lose a point for each goal +/-.

    GOLDEN GOAL

Each player is to predict the time of the first goal in the opening match (Derby v Fulham) to be used as a tie breaker, in the event of a tied total at the end of the four matches. The nearest to the actual time will go through to the final.

    Example: predicted score 3 – 2
    Actual score 1 – 2

    Points scored (3+5) = 8

Good luck to all our four semi finalists but especially Boro.

    Come on BORO.

    1. HI Exmil

      Here’s my revised forecasts

Derby 1 Fulham 1 First goal 17 minute by Fulham
BORO 2 Villa 1 First goal by Boro 6 minute
Fulham 2 Derby 0 First Goal 4th Minute
Villa 1- BORO 1 First Goal Villa 52 minute

  60. EXMIL CHALLENGE PLAYOFFS

    First Leg scores

    Redcar Red (4 + 5, 3 + 5) = 17 v Ian Gill (4 + 4, 3 + 4) = 15

    selwynoz (4 + 5, 3 + 5) = 17 v originalfatbob (5 + 4, 3 + 5) = 17

    All to play for.

    Come on BORO.

  61. EXMIL CHALLENGE PLAYOFFS

    SEMI FINAL RESULTS

Scores in order of the matches played
    D v F, B v V, F v D, V v B = Total

    Redcar Red 9,8,6,8 = 31

    Ian Gill 8,7,10,7 = 32

Ian Gill progresses to the final

    selwynoz 9,8,8,8 = 33

    originalfatbob 9,8,10,8 = 35

    originalfatbob progresses to the final

    Come on BORO.

      1. originalfatbob I can accept your entry as it is because it meets the requirements of below or now the you have had chance to study the rules, you can redo your entry for the final.

        Come on BORO.

  62. EXMIL CHALLENGE PLAYOFF FINAL

As in the Championship, there is no other match for the losing semi finalists. The rules for the Final between Ian Gill and originalfatbob are quite simple:

    Fulham v Aston Villa

    1. Predict the score at halftime.
    2. Predict the score at the end of the match (including extra time) penalty shootouts do not count.
    3. Tie breaker – Predict the time of the first goal.

For 1 and 2, for the correct score for each team earns 5 points, for every goal +/- deduct 1 point. For 3, if needed, the closest to the time wins.

Good luck to both of our playoff finalists.

    Come on BORO.

  63. EXMIL CHALLENGE PLAYOFF FINAL

Congratulations to Ian Gill on winning the playoff final. As both predicted the same halftime and full time scores, it was all down to the time of the first goal. originalfatbob went for 17 minutes but Ian Gill predicted 24 minutes and as the first goal was 23 minutes both were very close but being 1 minute out Ian takes the promotion.

Thanks for everyone who took part but I hope Boro make the challenge redundant next season by being clear in the automatic places.

    Come on BORO.
