It’s the start of the great transfer speculation for the next season so I thought a new post would be applicable for all those comments to be placed in one section.

Does Akpom go? Do we cash in on the reported £15m fee? Does he Stay? Will he do the same next season and score 30 goals?

Will Hackney move on ?

Can we get some of our loan players back?

What defenders do we need ?

Who will play in goal for us ?

Comments please ( not on a postcard ! )

According to the Daily Mail, both Southampton and Middlesbrough are interested in signing Zulte Waregem’s Novatus Miroshi. The 20-year-old Tanzanian only joined the side last summer from Israel, but has gone on to impress with his ability to play in multiple positions. So far this season, Miroshi has played central midfield, left-back and as a central defender in a back three. Despite their relegation from the Pro League, it is not surprising that the young Tanzanian is seeing interest from abroad.

Thanks for starting this thread. There are only two players out of contract Darnell Fisher and Luke Daniels so they will probably leave. Hopefully Matt Clark gets his back sorted. If so he will be like a new signing. A player we may look at is Jay Dasilva, left back released by Bristol City. Well liked by the fans apparently good defensively but not so good attacking. He made 20 tackles when we played down there. Not related to transfers but for those in OZ Foxtel are dropping BeIn from July 1 so will need to find another way to watch.

Thanks for starting the thread, Bob.

It's always good to have a look at the squad in the context of Carrick's 4-2-3-1 as a starting point. There are youngsters and other loanees to consider but the first team squad is essentially:

GK - Roberts, Daniels*, Lumley*

RB - Smith, Dijksteel, Fisher*
CB - Lenihan, McNair, Fry, Clarke, Hall*
LB - Bola, Coulson

CM - Howson, Hackney, Barlaser, Payero(*?)

AM - Jones, McGree, Crooks, Forss

ST - Akpom, Hoppe, Coburn

*Unlikely to be retained

Some of those players could be moved around such as Crooks and Forss who could both be strikers, or Akpom who could be classed as AM.

On first glance it looks to me that we're short of quality (bearing in mind the playing style) at GK, LB and ST and short of numbers in the attacking midfield roles.

And that is assuming everyone we want to stay, does.

If we could get decent money for Akpom , Jones, Hoppe, Lenehan, id do it, let's say 22m for that lot, I'd buy Piroe from Swansea , ogbene Rotherham, Bradley Liverpool, plus an upgrade in loans, we could be just as competitive again, Some big calls have to be made , interesting times.

Werder usually does his Excel spreadsheet but in advance of that.

After all the loanees leave or return and factoring out players whose contracts are up next month we're left with the following. Players with 12 months left in [brackets]

GKs: Roberts

Defenders: Smith, Dijksteel, [Fry], [McNair], Lenihan, Clarke?, [Bola], Coulson

Centre Midfield: [Howson], Barlaser, Hackney, [Payero]

Attacking Midfield: [Crooks], McGree, Jones,

Forwards: Forss, [Akpom], Hoppe, Coburn

Possible promotions from the U21s. Brynn, Finch, Conteh, Willis

I'm personally expecting to lose: Bola and Payero. We will probably sell Jones. May be able to keep Akpom. I think Fry and McNair will be offered new contracts. Crooks maybe too: he's a great option for the Championship.

We undoubtedly do have money in the kitty and, if we sell Jones and/or Akpom then, in some ways, we will probably be able to compete with the newly relegated teams who will mostly be focused on cutting costs.

We're also a much more attractive option for players (and Premier league loans) than we used to be. We will be one of the favourites for promotion next season.

The biggest mistake we made last summer was not putting a deadline on Tav's sale. If we sell Akpom and or Jones it has to be before the end of June so we can replace them. Selling Akpom in particular after the season starts would set us back horribly.

I also hope we don't repeat our mistake of chasing after high profile talents in continental Europe or further afield. We spent a lot of time and money on futile bids last summer. What's more, looking at how they have done, we would have been wrong to buy them anyway.

Things I think might happen.

Akpom stays: 50/50

Ramsey returns for 1 year: 60/40

We buy one of the following 90/10: Manning, Giles, da Silva (Bristol Left back)

Buy Ogbene (from Rotherham): 70/30

Hoppe sold or loaned 90/10

Payero leaves: 100/0

Jones sold 80/20

After that, who knows. We're losing 4-5 first team starters (Steffen, Giles, Ramsey, Archer, [Akpom]) and several other 1st team squad regulars (Mowatt, [Bola], [Crooks] [Fry/McNair])

If I am right, we will get Ramsey back and a like-for-like replacement of Giles but that still leaves a possible 1st 11 that looks pretty bare if everyone except Howson in their last 12 months leaves.

Roberts

Smith - Lenihan - Clarke? - [Giles]

Howson - Hackney

[Ogbene] - [Ramsey] - McGree

Forss

That's not a top-6 first 11.

Subs: Brynn, Dijksteel, DF, Barlaser, Crooks, Finch, Coburn

I thought I would ask Bing who we should buy...

Here are some football players that Middlesbrough football club could buy this summer:

  • Goalkeeper: Sam Johnstone (West Bromwich Albion)
  • Defender: Djed Spence (Tottenham Hotspur)
  • Defender: Nathan Collins (Burnley)
  • Midfielder: James Garner (Manchester United)
  • Midfielder: Conor Gallagher (Crystal Palace)
  • Midfielder: Ryan Christie (Bournemouth)
  • Forward: Brennan Johnson (Nottingham Forest)
  • Forward: Dominic Calvert-Lewin (Everton)
  • Forward: Armando Broja (Chelsea)

These players are all young, talented, and have the potential to improve Middlesbrough's squad. They would also be relatively affordable, which is important for a club like Middlesbrough that is not in the Premier League.

Probably a good job it's not working for us.

Wouldn't surprise me if Scott himself were the source of the rumour since there is no specific attribution.

Chatbox suggests these players:

As an AI language model, I do not have personal opinions or preferences. However, based on recent performances and potential needs, here are some players that Middlesbrough could consider signing this summer:

1. Josh Windass (Wigan Athletic) - The attacking midfielder has been in good form this season and could add creativity and goals to Middlesbrough's midfield.

2. Michael Olise (Reading) - The young winger has been impressive in the Championship this season and could provide pace and skill on the flanks.

3. Matty James (Bristol City) - The experienced midfielder could add leadership and stability to Middlesbrough's midfield.

4. Dion Sanderson (Wolves) - The young defender has impressed on loan at Sunderland this season and could provide depth and potential for Middlesbrough's defense.

5. Freddie Woodman (Newcastle United) - The goalkeeper has been on loan at Swansea City this season and could provide competition and potential for Middlesbrough's goalkeeping position.

@martin-bellamy

I think these are a season or two out of date. Michael Olise has been smashing in the assists for Crystal Palace in the EPL all season!

Greetings Diasborians.

It's taken me this long to shrug off the loss to Coventry and show my head above the parapet. I wonder if the people living closer to the club or even elsewhere in the UK find it easier when things go wrong because there are other supporters close by to help share the pain.

There doesn't seem to be much point in talking about the reasons for us losing. I don't think that we did anything wrong other than not scoring any goals. That may sound stupid but there were plenty of games this season that the team didn't play very differently but just scored the goals. The first game could have easily seen Akpom score twice and we would all be in a very different state.

Looking at the topic of transfers, there seems to be a basic question. How good are all of the young players that we have sent out on loan or have playing in the U-21s? If you look round the leagues there are plenty of young players who are only 19/20/21 and are holding down first team places. Look at Hackney(20), Aaron Ramsey(20) and Cameron Archer(21). All first team regulars at MFC. How old can our 'youth' players be and still be seen as 'future prospects'? The list of players who could be 'ready for the big step up' is quite large. If we look at those sent out to others first:-

Brynn - seems to be an outstanding young keeper.

Hemming - was a regular in 21/22 but seems to have had a 'lost' season.

Here we have two young keepers plus 4 more in the U-21s. We have created first team keepers all round the leagues - Steele and Pears are just two examples. Why aren't they playing for us?

Coulson - is he a Championship player?

Conteh - what level is he?

Coburn - is he as good as Evan Ferguson at Brighton?

Robinson - how may people know that he is playing for Carlisle and could be in a play-off final.

Hoppe - where does he stand. Is he a first team player for next year?

I'm sure that I've missed out a few and I've deliberately not included Payero.

Then we look at the academy. Why does the U-21 group exist? Should this group be training with the first team or out on loan. How many of this group are genuine first team candidates?

I'm not convinced that we have a lot of money available for transfers. It may be a choice between 'sell off our jewels and buy replacements' or 'promote the young talent'. Logically, it's a little bit out of box 1 and a bit out of box 2 backed up by some funds from Steve Gibson but we can't expect it to be massive. If we want to buy we will have to sell. Having said that, I have a lot of faith in the recruitment team. They have made very few mistakes in the last eighteen months and we can hope that this continues.

I'm optimistic for the future but I wonder if the rest of the Championship has had enough time to work out how to play against us. I'm supporting Luton for the play-offs because I can't get behind Coventry but maybe we'd do better being rid of Coventry who we can't beat.

Lots to think about.

My best wishes to you @Ken Smith.

Just a heads up it is the Asian Cup  in Qatar beginning January 12 so Riley McGree will be missing for over a month assuming the Socceroos go deep in the tournament.

@original-fat-bob

While I think Hackney is a very good player, I don't think rumours of Arsenal, Liverpool or even Newcastle should worry us too much as it's unlikely he'd get a game playing in a Champions League squad just yet. More likely the likes of Forest, Bournemouth or Brentford would see him as a potential player and in the end it may come down to whether they are prepared to pay a lot of money and offer him a decent contract. After all, Tav didn't look out of place in the PL but the warning of the disappearance of Spence will make him ponder a move to a big club.

Boro’s retained list shows that all the players I marked with an * have been released. Payero is the only unknown at this stage.

Have to say I’d love to see if Carrick can get a tune out of MP - the talent is definitely there. That ship may have sailed though and he may end up in the Hoppe bin as a failed experiment.

Don't forget that Martin Payero's loan to Boca Juniors also included an option to buy him at the end of the deal.

btw I noticed the Argentina season began at the end of January this year and finishes at the end of July - so not sure when the loan deal expires.

He did also feature in 17 games of last season (which ended in October before Qatar) for them - though only starting in 8. In the current season he has started in 6 of the 17 games and come on as sub twice - though he's scored in 3 of the last 4 games so he maybe after a contract!

Rumour that Newcastle are interested in Hackney.

I have no love for them. Everbody outside geordie land knows that millions of money from Saudia Arabia have funded their success. I'd rather have Boro as they are now without millions of money from other shady countries.

Well at the moment we appear to have a limited squad, although to be fair, so will a good number of current Championship clubs.

As to what type of season we may have next, may largely depend on the quality, and what they deliver, of the loan players we bring in.

Of the current squad, I think, as Andy said, Hoppe will possibly just disappear. Along with Payero that is a fair amount of cash to be written off.
Our CB Mr Clarke appeared to be a decent signing having played a high number a games for each club he played for. Can we get him fit.

I have said before, in my opinion, the Recruitment Team need to improve somewhat on their Fee signings. We need quality incomers across the whole of the squad. We need more pace, especially at the back. We need more creativity from the middle of the team. More goals from them.

We have a hard job I think to emulate the season now gone.

Middlesbrough Are Keen On Securing A Deal For Departing Manchester United Midfielder

Ethan Galbraith This Summer, The N.Ireland International Spent Last Season On Loan At Salford City.

Galbraith, 22, is set to leave

Manchester United as a free agent this summer. A report from Manchester World earlier this month revealed that the midfielder is beginning to attract transfer interest ahead of his contract expiry this summer, with Newcastle United, Sunderland, Stoke City, and Derby County among the teams keen.

@pedro

I suspect next season will hang on getting five very good loan signings and maybe a few more academy players breaking through. Clubs in the Championship just either can't afford to buy the quality needed to make the difference or even attract players that are 'too good' for the second tier. Hanging on to Akpom and Hackney would be a bonus but can they repeat their performances second time around? Maybe but no guarantee. OK, there's possibly a few bargains to be bought but it's generally hit and miss - possibly gambles on up-and-coming League One players is the best option in terms of transfers. Though the general rule is that pace comes at a price - goals come at an extortionate price - consistency is rarely for sale.

@werdermouth

Well put. The way to add value is to break through top-class youngsters with a couple of astute buys and the way to get promoted is to get some high class loans. As I tried to point out above in a rather long-winded way, we have a lot of young players who should be ready to break through.
